Writ of certiorari to William de Braybuf and Adam de Wynton, on the petition of Isabel de Fortibus, countess of Albemarle, showing that the wardship and marriage of the lands and heir of the said Emma pertain to her, 10 Sept. 4 Edw. I.

Aveton Giffard, Wyttechirche, Lamberton, Were and Kempebere. 15 knights' fees were held by the said Emma of the said countess, and the wardship thereof pertains to her.
Emma, her daughter, aged 10 on the last day of March last, is her next heir; and her marriage pertains to the king by reason of the wardship of the heir of John de Maundevile now in the king's hand, because Hugh de Wydewrthe her father, whose heir she is, held the manor of Leuistelegh of the said John by knight's service.

206. Henry de Pynkeny.
Writ (of certiorari) on the complaint of (Thomas de) Ardern that (the escheator) had ejected him from the wardship of the manor of Stanes and from a certain dower (undated fragment).

Stanes. The wardship of the manor, which Thomas de Pynkeny deceased held of the said Henry, was demised by the said Henry, who held of the king in chief, to Thomas de Arderne; and also the dower of Christiana, who was the wife of Robert de Pynkeney, in Stanes, when it should fall in, until the full age of the heir of the said Thomas de Pynkeney, and she did fealty to him for the same. Thomas de Arderne had peaceful seisin of the said wardship throughout the life of the said Henry, and the said dower through the death of the said Christiana came to his hands some time ago.

Dachet alias Dachchet, Dechchet. The said Henry always used to pay castle-guard (wardam) for the castle of Wyndessor, and to collect it through all his fees in divers counties, but he made payment by the hand of his reeve of Dachet, and when it was in arrear the constable of Wyndessor used to distrain in Dachet because it was nearer to the castle.

207. Geoffrey de Shardelowe.
Writ (missing).
Ireland. Extent of lands &c. of Robert son and heir of the said Geoffrey, who is in the king's wardship by reason of the vacancy of the archbishopric of Dublin, Monday before the Ascension, 4 Edw. I.
Skidouethe. A portion of a messuage, fishpond and garden, and 80a. land belong to the wardship.
Balicogedan. 20a.
Balisraht. Divers lands (extent given with names of tenants).
Swerdes. Two parts of a burgage.
Lusk. Two parts of a burgage which the said Geoffrey consigned for a term of eight years, whereof five are still to come.
Knichtiston. 2 carucates and 10a. land with dower, held of Clemenson de Synores, who is mesne between the king and the heir: the king has not the wardship.
Rothganston. 40a. with dower similarly held of the heir of Gilbert de Furneys ; the king has not the wardship.
The said Robert was aged 3 years three weeks before the Purification, 4 Edw. I.: his marriage is worth 10l., and not more because he is the only son of his father.

208. Henry de Longo Campo.
Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint of the abbot of Swyneshevet that the late escheator had taken into the king's hand 2 messuages and 2 bovates land in Burton in Ketstevene, of which the said Henry had enfeoffed him in frankalmoin, 8 July, 4 Edw. I.

Burton in Kesteven. The said abbot, &c. were enfeoffed by the said Henry of 2 messuages and 2 bovates land there, about the feast of the Assumption, 2 Edw. I.; and they were in peaceful seisin until the feast of St. Andrew following, when the said Henry died, and afterwards until Moses the escheator's clerk seized the tenement into the king's hand, and put in seisin thereof Walter Pudewardyn, who had the wardship of the heir through the king, and still holds it.

209. Henry Barbedor and Elias le Waleys.
Writ to the justiciary of Ireland, of extent and livery of the wardships &c. of the heirs of the said Henry and Elias, which are in the king's hands through the vacancy of the archbishopric of Dublin, to Master Thomas de Cheddeworth, who is to answer for the same according to the extent, saving to the king the marriage of the said heirs, 18 Sept. 4 Edw. I.
Ireland. Extent of the lands &c. of Elias le Waleys, who held of the said archbishopric in chief, made at Dublin, 10 March, 5 Edw. I.
Welshtown (Villam Wallens'). A manor place (mansio) in which is a ruined house and garden, and 99a. arable now wasted by war, 8a. pasture and two parts of a mill.
Balymolyn. 1a. (sic) land held by Walter Coytroch, rendering 66s. 8d. .yearly in time of peace, but (now) nothing on account of the war.
(Unspecified.) 1a. held by David Walens [is] rendering a pair of iron spurs yearly, price 2½d., at Balimor Castle. Pleas and perquisites 4s. yearly.
Welshtown ought to answer for two parts of 1 mark when royal service runs. The wife of the said Elias holds 55a. with meadow, and there is due ⅓ mark when royal service runs, and she receives 10s. yearly for a third part of the said mill.
John his son, aged 9 about the feast of the Assumption in the said year, is his heir, and his marriage is worth 100s.
Extent of the lands &c. of Henry Barbedor who held of the said archbishopric in chief, made on the same day.
Ardenoch. A manor place (mansio) in which is a stone house commenced, 32a. arable, and 12a. pasture, from which are due to the archbishop at Balimor 21¾d., and two parts of a fulling mill.
The mother of the said Henry holds 24a. arable in dower, and answers for 16d. to the archbishop, and receives 2s. from the mill in dower.
The wife of the said Henry holds 17a. arable, and owes to the archbishop 10½d. and a third part of ½d.
Swerdes. 1½ carucate land, from which he paid yearly to the archbishop 5 marks, of which land his mother has 60 acres for her dower, and renders 22s. 2½d., and his wife has 40 acres for her dower, and renders 24s. 9¾d., and so there remain for the lord's wardship (wardam) 80 acres, from whence is due to the archbishop 29s.7¾d. rent, leaving 37sd. for the lord's wardship.
Hugh his son, aged nine, is his heir, and his marriage is worth 100s.
Petition from Thomas de Cheddesworth for the king's letter to the treasurer and barons of the exchequer to audit his account of the above wardships and cause him to be allowed what shall be reasonable for the sustenance of the heirs; and to be assigned terms for paying the arrears of the account (undated).
Extent &c. 10 March, 5 Edw. I. being copy of the above extents. Endorsed; He has paid nothing to the exchequer, but only for the marriages, for which relaxation has been sought until now, and especially of the wardship of Elias Wallen[sis] whose land was almost wasted by war, and the extent is in arrear for four years.

Writ (of certiorari) to the sheriff of Wilts, whether Nicholas son and heir of the said Nicholas was in the wardship of King Henry, and whether Emma his mother was dowered of her husband's lands in Cumpton, 25 Nov. 4 Edw. I.

(Unspecified.) 4½ knights' fees were held by William [Boidel alias] de Boydel on the day he died, of the king in chief, doing service of 1 knight's fee to the king at Chester in time of war, and for the other fees his tenants do service at his castle of Dodleston ; and he held part of a wood of Sir Henry de Lascy [earl of Lincoln] constable of Chester, rendering a pair of spurs or 4d.

Causton. A messuage held of Baldwin de Caukewell by service of 4d. yearly.
He was born in Essex and the jury know nothing of his parentage, nor of his heirs.

Borham. A messuage, 140a. arable, 14a. meadow, 10a. pasture, 4a. wood, a water mill and 23s. rent, held of the king by service of 1 knight's fee.
He had three aunts, Hawis, Maud and Sabina ; Hawis had one daughter Juliana, who had two daughters, Juliana and Avelina; Maud had one son Roger, who had one son John; and Sabina had two daughters Roesia and Sibyl: the said Juliana and Avelina, John, and Roesia and Sibyl, are his next heirs, and of full age.
Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint of Laurence Hardell that the king's steward had taken into the king's hand lands in Terling whereof petitioner's uncle Jolland de Cokeham had enfeoffed the said Hervey for life only, 7 Feb. 5 Edw. I.
[Essex.] Inq. made at Borham on Monday after Ash Wednesday, 5 Edw. I.
[Terling ?] A messuage, 100a. arable, 12a. wood destroyed in the time of the war, 2a. meadow, 3a. pasture, and 10s. 6d. rent, &c., held of the bishop of Norwich by service of ⅓ knight's fee, were demised to the said Hervey for life by Jolland de Cokham with reversion to him and his heirs.
Laurence Hardel is next heir of the said Jolland, and aged 26. The jury could not have inspection of the charter.
Transcript of a charter made by the said Jolland to Hervey de Borham, Precentor of Hereford, viz.— A grant of all that messuage with the lands, &c., which he had of the gift of Idonea de Cokeham his mother as her heir, of the lands, &c. which she had in her pourparty of the inheritance of John Renger her brother in Terlingg, Borham and Hatfeud Peverell, to be held for his life, doing the accustomed services to the chief lords of the fee, and if the said Hervey shall die within 10 years, then his heirs and executors shall have the same for the residue of that term, with reversion to the said Jolland and his heirs, who shall save the said Hervey harmless against the said Idonea. For which grant the said Hervey gave a certain sum of money. Dated at Chelmsford in full county (court), Tuesday before St. Vincent, 56 Hen. III.
Writ to the said steward to make Inquisition concerning a messuage in Badinton, 27 June, 5 Edw. I.
Northampton. Inq. Saturday after St. Martin, 5 Edw. I.
Badington. A messuage was held by the said Hervey, by the delivery of Sir Robert Burnell, by reason of the minority of William de Haneworth who was in his wardship, by service of 1lb. pepper yearly; and that messuage ought to pertain to William son and heir of Roger de Haneworth, because Sir Ralph Cameys lately sold it to the said Roger and his heirs, and the said Roger sold it to one Adam de Cestreton a bastard who died seised thereof, whereby that messuage ought to pertain to the said William as escheat.
The said Hervey was born in distant parts, and the jury know nothing of his heirs.

Writ of certiorari on the complaint of the prior of Legh that the escheator had taken into the king's hand certain lands &c. in Borham which the said Hervey had given him and his house in frank almoin, 27 May, 5 Edw. I.
Essex. Inq. Saturday after the Annunciation, 6 Edw. I.
Borham. 30a. land, 2a. meadow, a wood called Heywod, 26s. 11d. rent, and 156 villeins' works, were given by the said Hervey to the prior and house of Leygh in frank almoin; the prior was put in seisin on Sunday after St. Katherine, 5 Edw. I. by letters patent of the said Hervey, and so continued until Thursday after the Purification following, when the lands &c. were taken into the king's hand, because the said Hervey held them of the king in chief of the fee of the honour of Boulogne, with his other lands in Borham, by service of 1 knight's fee.

Writ to Thomas de Normanvill the king's steward, 25 Oct. 5 Edw. I.
Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint of Gilbert de Nevill and Cecily his wife, aunt and coheir of Gilbert le Cundy, that lands &c. of the said Gilbert de Berneval her father in Aberford and Luterington had been intruded upon by John son of Alan Sampson of York, asserting that he was enfeoffed of the same by the said Gilbert, 18 Feb. 6 Edw. I.
York. Inq. Thursday after St. Matthias, 6 Edward I.
Aberford and Luterington. The said John was enfeoffed by the said Gilbert of 9 messuages and 9 bovates land there, and he had peaceful seisin for one day and one night before the said Gilbert died, but he had no other seisin there.
Writ of plenius certiorari by reason of the shortness of the abovesaid seisin and the weak state of the said Gilbert, 18 May, 6 Edw. I.
York. Inq. The day of St. Denis, 6 Edw. I.
John Sampson was put in seisin of the above messuages and land on the day of St. Bartholomew by the steward of the said Gilbert, who was of sane mind and good memory, by his command, in the presence of John de [E]yton who came for the purpose on behalf of the archbishop the chief lord of the fee, who had hindered the said John of his seisin for a fortnight previously : on the morrow the said Gilbert died.
