Writ to the sheriff of Wilts, escheator there, on the complaint of John de Fyfide that the escheator had taken into the king's hand the wardship of lands, &c., late of Emeline de Lascy, countess of Ulster, in Lavinton, which came to the hands of the said Richard after her death, because held of him by knight's service, and were by him given to the said John, commanding him if it is so, to restore the wardship to the said John, 28 Dec. 5 Edw. I. Endorsed:—I cannot cause the said John to have seisin, because the land is in the hand of Ralph de Sandwico, the king's steward and escheator.

Stupelavinton. The said John's man took seisin of the said lands for him from the said Richard's bailiff, by the said Richard's letters patent, on Friday before St. Lucy, 5 Edw. Grenethe. A manor called Grenethe, held in chief at (ad) the port of Hasting[es] by service of finding an oar at the same port when the king shall wish to cross the sea there.
William son of the said Matthew (sic), aged 32 and more, is his next heir.

Cattesasse hundred. A messuage with garden, 40a. arable, 4½a. meadow, and 6s. 1d. rent of assize, held of Sir John de Monte Acuto, service unspecified.
The jury know of no heir, because the said Thomas was a clerk and beneficed, but John de Monte Acuto, lord of the fee, holds that land as his escheat.

Gloucester. Inq. Sunday after St. George, 5 Edw. I.
Ebriston. The manor with its members, held of the heirs of the earl of Winchester of the fee of Leicester with other manors, by service of 12d. rent and a brachet.
He died on Thursday in Easter week in the abovesaid year. John his son, aged 23½, is his next heir.
Berks. Inq. Tuesday after St. Mark, 5 Edw. I.
Tubbeneye. The manor held of the abbot of Abbendon by service of 1 knight,½ mark for the guard of Windsor for 17 weeks to be paid to the abbot,½ quarter of winter wheat as church scot (churicshetti), suit at the king's hundred (court) at Uck, 12d. hidage there, and ½ quarter of winter wheat as kingescorn.

Writ of certiorari to the sheriff of Northampton, on the complaint of Edelina Corbet that the sheriff had taken into the king's hand the manor of Wyk Dyve of which she was enfeoffed for life, 18 Oct. 5 Edw. I.

[Wyk Dyve.] He held nothing of the king or of others in the county on the day he died ; but a year before he gave to the said Lady Edelina, all his land in the county which he held of Hugh de Plessy in chief by service of ¼ knight's fee, rendering nothing for it, besides an assart containing 16a. and ¼r., worth 8s. yearly, which he held of the king in chief, to to be held for her life, and she had peaceful seisin thereof from the time of the feoffment. Mandate from the king's steward to the sheriff of York reciting writ dated 12 June, 5 Edw. I.
York. Inq. (undated.)
Staynton. The manor (extent given) held of the castle of Tykehill for 1 knight's fee, by homage, 10s. for castle guard yearly, 8d. for food of the watchmen (de cibo vig'), ten days' ploughing with one plough on the demesne of Tyk[ehill], and making 1 perch upon the causeway (calcetum) of Tykehill, suit of court there, wardship, relief, marriage and scutage ; which manor &c. she delivered to John de Stayngrewe, knight, by a writing for four years for a certain sum of money, so that if she or her heirs should pay the same to him or his heirs at the end of the four years the manor should revert to them, and if not, the said John should remain enfeoffed for life, paying yearly 20 marks to the said Margery &c. ; but when he ought to have taken seisin the bailiff of Tykehill hindered seisin because it was held of the castle in chief, so that he had not peaceful seisin. She also held there a watermill, a windmill, 40s. rent, and homages of free tenants with suits of court and other services, of which she was in seisin on the day she died.
John le Boteler her son, who is of full age, is her heir.
Writ to the constable of the castle of Tykehull to cause John de Steynegryve to have his seisin again of lands, &c. in Steynton of which the said Margery enfeoffed him, 6 Feb. 5 Edw. I.
[York.] Extent (undated).
Steynton. The manor (extent given) held of the castle of Tyk[ehill], for homage, wardship and relief for 1 knight's fee, paying to the castle 10s. yearly for guard, and 8d. for food of the watchmen, and making 1 perch on the causeway towards Thornewode, and ploughing on the demesnes of the castle with one plough for ten days yearly, all which services the tenants shall do, excepting the 8d. for food, and it owes suit at the court of Tyk[ehill].
The lady that now is enfeoffed the abbot of Roche (de Rupe) of 22a. wood and 2s. rent; Thomas de Stirap in free marriage with her daughter of 17s. 2½d. rent and 28a. wood; her two sons of 5 marks and 10s.; and her two daughters of 42a. of demesne, 2 bovates of bondage which used to render 14s. 2d., and 16a. wood. And she demised to Master Nicholas de Meleburne 3 marks rent yearly for ten years, whereof one is past, and to John, parson of Hokerton, a watermill worth ½ mark yearly. And she demised the said manor to Sir John de Steingreve for four years &c. (as abovesaid) for 100l. which he gave her.

236. Hugh de Wodeworth alias de Wydeworth.
Writ of certorari, on the complaint of Robert de Dynam, that whereas the said Hugh, father of Emma, the said Robert's wife, who is his heir, held the manor of Louestelegh of John de Maundevile and died before the said John, whereby the said John had the wardship, and his executors demised it to the said Robert for 10l. yearly, for so long as the said Emma should be within age, the king, believing that the said Hugh died after the said John, so that the said wardship pertained to the king by reason of the minority of the said John's heir, had taken the manor into his own hand, 11 Dec. 5 Edw. I.
Devon. Inq. Tuesday after St. Thomas the Apostle, 5 Edw. I.
Luuesteleg. The manor was held by Hugh de Wydeworth, father of the said Emma, who is his heir, of the said John by knight's service, and he died two years before the said John, who having the manor in his wardship made his will for the demise of the said manor for his soul until the lawful age of the said Emma, and his executors demised the same to the said Robert de Dyneham for 10l. yearly so long as the said Emma should be within age.

Devon. Inq. Tuesday the morrow of St. Thomas the Apostle, 5 Edw. I.
[Unspecified.] 12 knights' fees, held of Isabel de Fortibus, countess of Devon, worth 40l. yearly; ½ knight's fee held of Sir Oliver de Dineham by reason of the dower of Isabel de Curtenay his wife, worth 40s. yearly; and 1 knight's fee held of John de Aslegh by reason of the wardship of John son and heir of Ralph de Heauton, worth 40s. yearly. They held no lands &c. of the king in chief.
The said Alice died of sound mind, but Emma her daughter died insane. Emma daughter of Hugh de Wydeworth, aged 11, is their next heir.
