By the minutes of the Council of Jamaica of Jan. 7
last it appears that 721l. 10s. 7d. had been taken
out of the Treasury there to supply the King's
frigate Drake ; for payment whereof bills were
drawn by Capt. Sprag, commander of said frigate,
on the Navy Board and the value was received
by Samuel Robertson, merchant in London, agent
to the late Earl of Inchiquin, during his [Jamaica]
government, and was to have been repaid by his
Lordship [to the Treasury] in Jamaica : whereupon
the President of [the Council of] that island has
since, by letters, directed said Robertson to pay
said money to Sir William Beeston or Bartholomew
Gracedieu, merchants in London, for the service of
the island (to the use whereof it was appropriated
by Act of Assembly), but Robertson alleges he has
already disposed of the said money by order of the
said late Earl. The present Earl seems willing
to direct his agents in Jamaica to pay said sum
into the Treasury there, if not already satisfied, or
to give security to pay same here to the Agents
of the island if there be no money or merchantable
commodities in the hands of his agents there. The
present Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General
of Jamaica may therefore be ordered not to lay
any attachment on the Earl's effects in Jamaica. |
