To William, earl of Douglas, of the diocese of St. Andrews Indult to choose the dean of his chapel or any other fit priest as his confessor who may, as often as opportune, after hearing his confession and the confessions of the domestic commensal members of his household, grant them absolution and enjoin penance, except in cases reserved to the apostolic see; and that the said dean or confessor may grant to him and them the sacrament of Eucharist and other sacraments except during Easter, when they shall go therefor to the church of the parish within which they shall be. Relaxation in perpetuity of three years and three quarantines of enjoined penance to penitents who on the feast of St. Bride and on the day of its octave, from the first to the second vespers of each, visit and give alms for the completion, conservation and maintenance of the parish church, erected by papal authority into the collegiate church of St. Bride, Douglas, in the diocese of Glasgow, which William, earl of Douglas has at great cost caused to be new built; (fn. 4) with grant that the provost or one of the canons, appointed by him or by the chapter, may hear the confessions of all faithful who go to the said church in order to obtain the said indulgence, on the said feast and during the whole of its octave, and grant absolution even in cases specially reserved to bishops and ordinaries, but not in cases reserved to the apostolic see. Licence, as below. James, king of Scots recently caused to be set forth to the pope that in the realm of Scotland, especially in the city and diocese of Glasgow, there is no olive oil, that it has to be brought from elsewhere, and is so dear that it cannot easily be had, whereas butter and other milk-meats abound in the said city and diocese and neighbouring parts, and are wont to be used there in Lent and on other days on which the eating of milk-meats and butter is forbidden. The pope therefore, at the petition of the said king and of the inhabitants of the said city and diocese, grants licence in perpetuity to the said inhabitants and to temporary dwellers in the said city and diocese that in Lent and on the said days they may eat butter and other milk-meats without any scruple of conscience. Restitution, as below. Eugenius IV separated all the tithes, great and small, then belonging to the rector and vicar of the parish church of Rathaw in the diocese of St. Andrews, and applied them to the collegiate church of Corstroffyn’ in the said diocese. At the recent petition of William de Lauedre, lord of Hauton and of all the parishioners of the said parish church, containing that on account of the said separation the said church, which has a great and populous parish, has been much weakened and neglected, and that the cure of the parishioners can ill be borne, the pope hereby separates from the said collegiate church all the tithes etc, which formerly belonged to the portion of the vicar of the said parish church, value not exceeding 8l. sterling, and grants and assigns them for the portion of a vicar to be again instituted in the said parish church. He moreover erects in the said parish church another vicarage, and makes provision thereof, value not exceeding 8l., to Thomas de Lauedre, priest, of the said diocese, of a race of barons, who was lately successively dispensed by papal authority, as the son of an unmarried knight and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice [even with cure etc.] and to hold two other benefices [with cure or otherwise incompatible etc.], and appoints him to be the new vicar of the said church, with the said tithes; with mandate hereby to the chancellor of Dunb[l]ane to induct him or his proctor etc. Ad fut. rei mem. To the members of the confraternity or gild instituted in honour of St. Mary in the church of St. Botulph, in the town (ville) of Bostone in the diocese of Lincoln. Indult that the confessors whom the present members, of both sexes, and those who join within five years from the date of these presents shall choose may, after hearing their confessions, absolve them from their sins etc. committed up to the day of receiving these presents, even in reserved cases, once only, and absolve them from the sins etc. which they shall commit during the said five years, in non-reserved cases, as often as opportune, enjoining penance; and that the said confessors may grant them, in the hour of death, being contrite and having confessed, plenary remission of all their sins; with the usual clauses, e.g. ‘Et ne quod absit’ against abuse of the present indult, ‘Et insuper quod per unum annum' requiring fasting every Friday for a year etc., ‘Porro si forsan’ enabling the confessor to commute the said fasting. Indult, at his recent petition (containing that from fear of the prior of the said monastery, who alleged that he would imprison him, he left and apostatized for about thirteen weeks, leaving off his habit, that he was absolved and corrected by the abbot and convent and performed the penance imposed, and has since lived laudably in the said monastery for fifteen years, but, in accordance with the statutes, is deprived of his stall in choir and place in chapter), to be promoted to all, even holy orders and be elected etc. to any dignities, even abbatial, of the said order, and receive and hold any benefices or offices wont to be governed by its monks, and have the said stall and place; notwithstanding the constitutions of Otto and Ottobon, sometime papal legates in England etc.Religionis etc. (Pe. de Noxeto. | l. Indult, at his recent petition (containing that in former times (fn. 12) some of the monks of the said monastery were wont to study letters at an university, and that he desires to follow the said custom), that he, who intends to live without the help of the said monastery, with the goods of his parents, after asking, even if he do not obtain, licence of his superior, may study for seven years in the faculty of theology or in canon law in any university within or without England, exercise all scholastic acts, lecture and dispute in theology, and be promoted to degrees of those faculties; notwithstanding the above constitutions. To Richard, abbot of the Cistercian monastery of St. Mary, Combe (de Cunba) in the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield. Grant and indult for him and his successors to wear anywhere mitre, ring, gloves (cirothecis), pastoral staff and sandals and other pontifical insignia; give solemn benediction to the people after mass, vespers and matins, provided that no catholic bishop or papal legate be present; bless chalices, vestments, vessels (vasa) and ecclesiastical ornaments necessary for divine service, and confer the first tonsure to the novices of the monastery.
