1040. John Woodfield appeared and paid the sum of Ten Pounds Ten Shillings and five Pence halfpenny being the Ballance of the Accompts of the said John Woodfield and Joseph Faikney the Surveyors of the Highways for the year 1750 to William Hazard the present Surveyor of the Parish of Saint John at Hackney.

William Doughty was Examined upon Oath touching the Place of his last legall Settlement which is in the Parish of Saint Leonard Shoreditch in the County of Middlesex by serving One John Batts a Gardiner at Hogsdon in the said Parish for Two years and upwards by the Leave and Consent of Thomas Long Citizen and Merchant Taylor of London to whom he was bound Apprentice for Seven Years during the continuance of his said apprenticeship. 1045. Charles Edwards complains against Bridgeman Brown the Younger for unlawfully taking two Chickens his Property at Stoke Newington in the County of Middlesex on the first Day of June instant. Bridgeman Brown, the Younger of the Parish of [Saint Mary deleted] Stoke Newington [and] Bridgeman Brown of the same Parish, Farmer, each £5 Upon Condition That the above bound Bridgeman Brown the Younger do personally appear at the next General Quarter Sessions of the Peace to be held for the County of Middlesex at Hicks Hall in Saint Johns Street then & there to answer the Complaint of Charles Edwards for unlawfully taking two Chickens his Property at Stoke Newington aforesaid on the first Day of June instant and in the mean time to be of good behaviour and not to depart the Court without Licence Then this Recognisance to be void &c. Taken and Acknowledged the Day and Year first above written.

1051. Robert Royston Appeared and gave an Account of his Settlement, To witt, That he was born in the Parish of Eccleston in the County of Chester and could not make appear that he had gained any legal settlement elsewhere and being required to make Oath of his said Settlement he refused [and deleted] to be sworn and being asked by the Justices if he was one of the People called Quakers and offered by the said Justices his affirmation in case he was a Quaker The said Robert Royston declared he is not a Quaker. 1052. 1055. Ordered That M^r: Thomas Slater, Church Warden do pay to James Bolton the sum of Ten Shillings for Assisting James Atkins the Beadle in the Execution of his said Office while the said James Atkins was sick being about fourteen Days.

1056. Complaint being made by Richard Dann Overseer of the Poor of the Parish of Saint John at Hackney [That deleted] against Elizabeth Riddle Singlewoman That he hath received information That the said Elizabeth Riddle was about Ten Weeks agoe delivered of a Male Bastard Child in the said Parish called Henry which is now living and likely to become chargeable to the said Parish. Ordered That the said Elizabeth Riddle be sumoned to attend us at the next Meeting to be held here to be Examined upon Oath touching the putative Father of the said male Bastard Child. 1057. William Allen brought in Custody of Mathew Eagelsoe Constable on a Warrant granted against him to Oblige him to give an Account of his Settlement was Examined upon Oath touching the Place of his last legall Settlement which is in the Parish of Saint Peters in the East in the City of Oxford by being a yearly servant to one John Rawlins a Scowerer there at Two Pounds & Ten Shillings a year and serving him in the said Parish One year & Six Months. Edward Flack was brought in Custody of Mathew Eagelsoe Constable on a Warrant to be Examined upon Oath touching his last legall settlement and was Examined and Sworn thereto which is at Barkway in Hertfordshire having lived a Yearly Servant with one William Stallabrass a Farmer there for two years at £5:5^s: a year and was allowed One Month to bring a Certificate. 1062. Elizabeth Riddle Singlewoman was brought in Custody of Taylor Headborough to be Examined on Oath touching a Bastard Child born of her Body in the Parish of S^t. John at Hackney which is now living and likely to be chargeable to the said Parish and Signed an Adjudication against Mathew Dixon of the same Parish as the reputed father thereof. [See 1054, 1056, 1107].

1063. Pheebe Hams Widow of Richard Hams deced was brought in Custody of James Bolton Headborough to give an Account of her settlement She declared she is marryed since the Death of the said Richard Hams and that her s^d Second Husband is now alive but refused to tell his Name, who he is, or where he lives but said That She hath been marryed about 3 years and that her now Husband is the Father of her last Child born since the Death of the said Richard Hams. James Bolton made Oath That about 10 or 12 Days agoe the said Pheebe Hams told him That if the Justices insisted That she should declare the Father of her last Child She would go away and leave her 3 Children to the Parish Whereupon a Warrant was Ordered to committ her to the House of Correction as an Idle and disorderly Person. 1069. M^r Daniel Deflores attended on a Sumons to Shew Cause why he refuses to take upon himself the Office of one of the Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Saint John at Hackney in the County of Middlesex for the present year (to which he hath been appointed) on the Complaint of M^r Daniel de Votier one other of the Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish and the said M^r Daniel de Votier also attended And It was agreed between them That [entry incomplete; the remainder is taken from the draft minutes] Mr. Flores alledged That M^r Votier the other Ov. proposed & offered to do the Duty for him and told him to take no Care about it only you give me what you would give another And that he is ready to pay M^r. 1070. John Blackwell attended and made Information on his Oath That on the nineteenth Day of this Instant December he did hear Robert Abbott of the Parish of Saint John at Hackney in the County of Middlesex Saylor swear Six prophane Oaths saying each time By God And Curse Six prophane Curses saying each time Damn Your Blood in the said Parish of Saint John at Hackney. Granted A Sumons for the said Robert Abbott to appear at a Petty Sessions to be held at this Place on Monday the [Thirty fir deleted] thirtyeth day of this Instant December. [See 1075].

1071. Thomas Chapman produced and delivered a Certificate dated the 19^th of April 1727 whereby he and [blank] his Wife are owned to be Inhabitants of South Mims in this County And he was Sworn that he hath not gained any Legal Settlem^t. since. [See 1067].

1072. Signed an Order for G Clear Ch. W. &c 1749 to pay the Ballance of his Accompts as such to M^r Slater the prsent Ch. W. (fn. 12)

Robert Abbott appeared on his Sumons to answer to an laid [sic] before Henry Norris Esq against him for Swearing Six prophane Oaths saying each time By God and cursing six prophane Curses saying each time Damn your Blood on the Nineteenth Instant in the Parish of Hackney Of which John Blackwell now made Oath Whereupon the said Robert Abbot was convicted of the said Offences and (being the second Conviction) he was fined and paid down the Sum of two Shillings for each of the said Oaths and the further Sum of two Shillings for each of the said Curses making in the whole the Sum of One Pound and four Shillings.
