996. Mr John Cox Church Warden and Overseer of the Poor of the Parish of St John at Hackney in the County of Middlesex made oath that Eleanor the wife of Miles Nuttbrowne very lately applyed to him for relief for her and her child and Complained that her said husband would not make any provision for her and that she was in necessitous Circumstances and that the said John Cox did relieve her accordingly and the said Eleanor also testifyed the same on her oath. The said Justices thereupon Issued out a Warrant at the request of the said John Cox to apprehend the said Miles Nuttbrowne to answer the said Complaint and to be further dealt with according to Law. [See 127, 343].

997. Elizabeth Burrell applyed and desired leave to draw Drink at the House late Edward Poole's the Sign of the Lamb in Homerton. Agreed That she have accordingly 'till the next General Renewing of Victuallers Licences.

998. Ordered That Mr John Cox do pay to James Arnold Sixteen shillings for nursing and maintaining two Children of William Ingles for one Month who went away and left them without making any provision for them.

1004. Ordered That the several Defaulters above mentioned be brought in by warrant Henry Harrill having made Oath that they were duly Summoned.

1005. Sarah the wife of Thomas Woodward and their two Children were passed from the Hamlet of Mile End Old Town hither and she made Oath that her said Husband Rented a House in Homerton in this parish at the yearly Rent of fourteen pounds and occupyed the same for three years & paid all Taxes. Certificate granted to the said Hamlet.

1006. Ordered That several Officers of this Parish for the years 1737, 1738, 1739, & 1740 be Summoned to appear at a Petty Sessions to be held here on Fryday the fourteenth day of August next at ten in the forenoon and then lay before his Majesty's Justices of the Peace as shall be here present their accompts in writing of all money by them respectively received and paid in discharge of their respective Offices in order that they be Examined according to Law.

1007. Adjourned to this Place to Fryday the 14th day of August next to ten in the forenoon.

1008. The accompts of Mr. Robert Aldwinckle Deceased Churchwarden & Overseer of the Poor for the years 1737, 1738, and part of the year 1739 were laid before the sd Justices by which it appeared that he received the sum of One Thousand Eight hundred and Sixty pounds nine shillings and one penny three farthings and that he paid away in the discharge of his said Office the sum of One thousand Eight hundred and fifty four pounds Eleven shillings and four pence farthing so that there is remaining in his Executrix hands and due to the Parish to Ballance the said Accompts the sum of Five pounds seventeen shillings and nine pence half penny. (fn. 5)

1009. Samuel Sadleir Overseer of the Poor for the year 1739 laid his acct before the above named Justices by which it appeared that he received the sum of Five hundred forty Six pounds Eleven shillings and Eleven pence and that he paid away in the discharge of his said Office the sum of five hundred and thirty five pounds One shilling & Six pence so that there is remaining in his hands and due to the parish to Ballance his said accompts the sum of Eleven Pounds ten shillings and five pence.

1010. The above accompts were approved of and confirmed by the above named Justices under their hands & Seals and the several Ballances Ordered to be paid to Mr Edward Nutt the present Church Warden and Overseer of the Poor to the use of the Parish.

1011. Mr. Robert Grubb and Mr. William Catlin Overseers of the Poor for the year 1740 attended and acquainted the Justices that they have endeavoured to finish their Collections but that there are a considerable number of persons in arrear whose names are contained in a List by them delivered in and pray'd that the said Justices will be pleased to grant their Warrant for Summoning them to appear before them on such day as they shall think proper to shew cause why they have refused or neglected to pay the sums which they are respectively Rated and assessed and to be proceeded against according to Law. Ordered That they be Summoned to appear at a Petty Sessions to be held here on Fryday the twenty first of this Instant August at nine in the morning.

1012. Mr John Cox Church Warden and Overseer of the Poor for the year 1740 pray'd further time to prepare his accompts.

1013. Adjourned to this place to Fryday next to nine of the Clock in the morning.

1017. John Parr was Examined upon oath touching the Place of his last Legal Settlemt which is in the parish of St John at Hackney by being a hired Servt by the year to Mrs. Bates and serving her for three or four years.

  • 5. Aldwinckle had continued in office so long because of the vestry dispute over the turnpike (see introduction). By custom he should have been succeeded by Thomas Rudge, the junior church warden, but Rudge was the leader of the opposition to the turnpike and the gentlemen of the vestry therefore refused to appoint him. Litigation ensued and Aldwinckle remained in office until an amicable settlement was reached in 1739. H.A.D., D/F/TYS/12/1.
