483. WILLIAM SON AND HEIR OF JOHN LE MARESCHAL.
SUFFOLK. Proof of age made before the king at York, a month from the day of St. Michael, 26 Edw. I.
Whereas the said William, who was born at Denham, and baptized in the church there as is said, came and said he was of full age and sought the lands &c. of his inheritance, which are in the wardship of Richard de Felmyngham, executor of John de Bohun, and Ralph de Heminhale, executor of Godfrey de Acre co-executor with the said Richard of the said John, to whom the king granted that wardship, and the king gave him a day to prove his age before the king, as abovesaid, the sheriff was commanded to summon jurors in Suffolk, and to warn the said Richard and Ralph to be present, who came not &c. let the said proof of age be taken &c.
Gerard de Wachesham, knight, aged 40, distant 6 leagues from Denham, says that the said William was 21 years of age on the sixth day before St. Michael, 26 Edw. I., and this he knows because he has a son Giles 2 years younger, who was 19 on the said day. John, now abbot of St. Edmunds and then chaplain of Sir Robert de Insula, baptized him in the church of Denham. and William de Beuchamp, steward of the heir’s mother, gave him his name &c.
Peter de Denarston, knight, aged 42, distant 4 leagues from Denham, agrees and knows it because he was present at the feast of the purification of the heir’s mother &c.
Reginald Pecche, knight, aged 50, distant 4 leagues from Denham, says the like, and knows it because he has a son Geoffrey half a year older, who will be 22 at the feast of St. Gregory next.
Gilbert del Haye, aged 50, distant 2 leagues from Denham, agrees, and knows it because he married his wife at the feast of St. Edward the King next before the said heir’s birth, 22 years ago at the said feast last, and he has a son William born at the Gule of August next before the birth of the said heir, who will be 22 on that day next.
John de Sydalvesmere, aged 40, distant 3 leagues from Denham, says the like, and knows it because on the day of the baptism he came with his father to Denham upon business and there heard from the aforesaid John (the chaplain) that he had baptized the said heir.
Adam Bertilmeu, aged 38, distant a league from Denham, agrees, and knows it because his father, whose heir he is, died at the feast of St. Faith next after the said heir’s birth, 21 years ago at that feast last past; and he says that the other godfather was called Walter de Saye.
Henry de Brockeleye, aged 36, distant 2 leagues from Denham, agrees, and he was present at the baptism.
Nicholas de Rede, aged 41, distant nearly 2 leagues from Denham, agrees, and says that the heir’s godmother was Petronilla de Seye, and that his own father, whose heir he is, died at the feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross next before the heir’s birth, 21 years ago at that feast last past.

John Mauveysin, aged 50, distant 2 leagues from Denham, agrees, and knows it because he has a son William, only 8 days older than the heir, who was 21 this year on the 14th day before the feast of St. Michael.
John de Wycham, aged 40, distant a league and more from Denham, agrees, and knows it because on the day the heir was born he went to Denham to speak with Lady Amice de Say, with whom the heir’s mother was in company, about buying a certain marriage from her, and found her so occupied about the heir’s mother that he returned without doing anything, and on the third day after he returned and was present at the baptism.
Roger de Alverichesfeld, aged 43, distant a league and a half from Denham, agrees, and knows it because on 2 April before the heir’s birth his father died, whose heir he is, and he went to the abbot of St. Edmunds and did what was due for his lands, 21 years ago last 2 April.
And because the said William has sufficiently proved his age, and appears by his aspect to be of full age, let him have seisin of the lands &c. of his inheritance.
C. Edw. I. File 86. (7.)
484. ALICE DAUGHTER AND HEIR OF HUGH DE WYNDESOR.

Whereas the said Alice, [who] was born …… [Be]menistre and baptized in the church there …… and sought the lands of her inheritance which are in the wardship of the bishop …… by the king’s commission, the sheriff was commanded to summon jurors in 15 days from the [feast] of St. Martin and warn the said bishop to be present, who returned that he had done so, but the bishop said nothing why the said proof should be delayed; therefore let it be taken &c.
Peter de Bowode, aged 50, distant 2 leagues from Bucham, says that the said Alice was born at Bucham and baptized in the church of Bemenistre, and was 16 before the [day of the] Annunciation last, and this he knows because he has a daughter named Joan of the same age, and one David was priest at that time.
Nicholas de Strode of Bemenistre, aged 36, distant a league from Bucham, agrees, and knows it because he has a son John of the same age who was 16 on the day of the Annunciation next after the day on which the said Alice was born. One Robert de Boys and Alice the wife and Maud the daughter of John de Pirham (?), were godparents.
John de Uppehay, aged 36, distant 2 leagues from Bucham, agrees, and knows it because his mother died on Monday after the close of [Easter] next after the said Alice’s birth, 16 years ago at Easter last.
Roger de Bosco of Childefrome, aged 40, distant 3 leagues from Bucham, agrees, and knows it because he married his wife at the feast of the Purification next before the birth of the said Alice, 16 years ago, and has a son William, born 2 years after, who was 14 at Christmas last.
Nicholas de Morteshorn, aged 36, distant a league from Bucham, agrees, and knows it because his father died in the same year 16 years ago.
Stephen de Morteshorn, aged 40, distant a league from Bucham, agrees, and knows it because he has a daughter Edith, born at Christmas before the said Alice’s birth, who was 16 at Christmas last.

John de la Tour of Berewyk, aged 30 and more, dwelling 5 leagues from Bucham, agrees, and knows it because he had an elder brother Thomas who died 10 days before the said Alice’s birth, and he entered upon his lands 16 years ago at the feast of the Annunciation last.
William Denebaud of Henton, aged 37, distant 4 leagues from Bucham, agrees, and says that Hamo his father, on the feast of SS. Peter and Paul next after the said Alice’s birth, took his journey for the Holy Land and died on the feast of St. Thomas the Apostle at Nyuns on his way home, 16 years ago.
Bartholomew de Oterei of Shireburn, aged 36, distant 10 leagues from Bucham, agrees, and knows it because William his father died at the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Mary before the said Alice’s birth, and he as his son and heir entered into his lands 17 years ago at the said feast last.
John Blauncheval of Suthpeured, aged 40, distant 2 leagues from Bucham, agrees, and knows it because the eyre of John de Reyngate was at Shireburn in 18 (rectius 8) Edw. I., and the said Alice was born the following year on the eve of the Annunciation 9 Edw. I.
Richard de Ketelbergh of Corscum, aged 40, distant 2 leagues from Bucham, agrees, and knows it because in the term …. next after the said Alice’s birth, Robert his father lost half a virgate of land before the king’s justices, by a writ of entry which Hugh father of the said Alice brought against him; moreover he was at the banquet when her mother was purified.
Because the said Alice has sufficiently proved her age, and appears by her aspect to be of full age, viz.—16 years, let her have seisin of her lands &c.
