The meadow, worth 100s. yearly, is held of the heir of Philip Burnel together with the residue of the whole manor by homage and service of 1d. yearly. Roger de Nodariis the father gave the said meadow to Roger his son and Joan his wife and their heirs and enfeoffed them jointly of the same by charter, with condition that if the said Roger the son should die before his father, the said Joan surviving, she should hold the same for life for her whole dower, but if the said Roger should survive his father, as he did, then he and the said Joan and their heirs should hold the same for ever. This meadow was extended together with the other meadows of the manor by the sheriff and afterwards by the escheator.
Writ of plenius certiorari to the escheator to enquire into all the circumstances of the tenure of the manor of Churchehull by the said Roger, warning Maud late the wife of Philip Burnel, mother of his heir, to be present with the muniments concerning the manor, 11 Oct. 26 Edw. I.
OXFORD. Inq. made at Chupyngnorton, 21 Nov. 26 Edw. I. (sic).
Churchull. Roger de Whelton, son and heir of William de Whelton, in 8 Edw. I or thereabout, enfeoffed Robert Burnel, late bishop of Bath and Wells, of all the service which Roger de Nodariis, brother of the said Roger de Whelton, owed him concerning the manor of Churchull, which he held of him, viz.—homage and service of 1d. yearly and service of 1 knight’s fee, doing scutage when it should happen. Roger de Nodariis and Roger his son, did the services aforesaid to the said Robert, and after the said Robert’s death to Philip Burnel, his nephew and heir; whereby the wardship of the manor pertains to Edward son and heir of the said Philip, who is now in the king’s wardship.
In the time of king Henry III one Nicholas de Nodariis, ancestor of the said Roger, held the said manor of one Richard le Vernoun, ancestor of Richard le Vernoun that now is, by service of a knight’s fee, and came into the wardship of the said Richard by reason of his minority, and the said Richard married his daughter Eustachia to the said Nicholas, and gave him quittance by charter of the service of a knight’s fee which he owed him for the said manor; since which time neither the present Richard de Vernoun nor any of his ancestors have had any service from the manor by the hands of the said Roger or his ancestors. After the said Nicholas came into the wardship of the said Richard no heir of his was ever in wardship except Roger son of Roger son of Roger, who is now in the king’s wardship as wardship of wardship by reason of the minority of Edward Burnel aforesaid.
Endorsed: This inquisition was taken in the presence of …. the attorney of Maud Burnel, mother of Edward son and heir of Philip Burnel, and of the executors of Roger de Nodariis, who showed …. muniments which sufficiently declared the right of the said heir, Richard de Vernoun being present.
Writ of certiorari to the escheator to enquire whether Roger de Nodariis deceased and Joan his wife, whom John de Harcourt has married, were enfeoffed jointly of 10l. land in the meadow of Milnham in the manor of Churchehull by Roger the father, or not &c. 9 July, 27 Edw. I.
OXFORD. Inq. taken at Chepyng Norton on Saturday after the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, 27 Edw. I. (defective).
Mullneham in the manor of Churchehull. The said Roger, the father, gave 10l. land in the said meadow to Roger his son and Joan his wife and the heirs of the said Roger the son, and enfeoffed them jointly by his charter forty days before Roger the son espoused the said Joan, and put them in seisin before the marriage, and because Roger the son was not then of full age he gave him Richard de Sancto Valerico as guardian, who had the guardianship for a long time, and delivered the same to one Master John de Sancto Valerico, and he to one Aliamus, brother of the said Roger, who demised it to Roger the father, who held it until his death as (guardian?) of the said Roger his son and Joan because the said Roger (the son) was still under age. The said 10l. land (were assigned?) to the said Joan by Roger the father in dower with the assent of the same (Roger at the) church gate when he espoused her, before the enfeoffment aforesaid.
