SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Blibourgh, Friday after the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, 41 Edward III.
Blibourgh. The manor (extent given, including a marsh of 8a., a turbary, a custom called ‘travers,’ a leet held on the feast of St. Thomas the Apostle, and two fairs at the Assumption and the Annunciation), held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee.
He died on 5 August last. John de Nevill, his son, aged 38 years and more, is his heir.

LONDON. Inq. taken before the mayor, 28 August, 41 Edward III.
He died on 5 August, 41 Edward III, seised of:—
Parish of St. Olave in Sylverstrete. A tenement in the corner of Mugwellestrete on the west side. It now stands empty and unlet, nor was it let at any time during Ralph’s life, but always stood empty and served as the inn of himself and his servants. It is held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.
He held no other lands &c. in the city or suburbs.
John Nevill, knight, his son, aged 38 years, is his heir.

ESSEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Claveryngge, Thursday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 41 Edward III.
Claveryngge. The manor (extent given), with the half-hundred of Claveryngge, held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee. The extent includes a park, rents of 1lb. pepper, 1/2lb. cummin and 3 ploughshares, and a leet held on the feast of St. Peter’s Chains. The half-hundred is worth 33s. 4d. yearly. The advowson of the chantry of the chapel of St. John the Evangelist, Claveryngge, belongs to the manor, but is worth nothing.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Horncastre, Sunday before the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, 41 Edward III.
He held no lands &c. in the county, but he held divers fees and parcels of fees, to wit:—
Askeby and Tynton. One knight’s fee, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Neuton by Rasen. A twentieth part of a fee, held of the king in chief by acquisition (de conquestu).
Myddelrasen. Three-quarters of a fee, held of the king in chief, as of the honor of Dover, rendering 24s. yearly for ward of the castle of Dover.
Nettilton. Half a knight’s fee, held of the king in chief by the old feoffment.
Refham. A fourth part of a fee, held of the bishop of Lincoln, who holds it of the king in chief by the old feoffment.
Stretton. Two knights’ fees, held of the archbishop of York, who holds them of the heirs of Hugh Paynell, who hold them of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Herdewyk and Wykham. Two-thirds of a knight’s fee, held of the king in chief by old feoffment made to his ancestors.
Bekeby. One knight’s fee, held of the bishop of Lincoln, who holds it of the king in chief by the old feoffment.
Keleby. One knight’s fee, held of the said bishop, who holds it of the king in chief by the old feoffment.
Ulseby. A fourth part of a fee, held of the said bishop, who holds in like manner.
Staynton and Randeby. Half a knight’s fee and a fifth part of a knight’s fee, held of the said bishop, who holds in like manner.
Burreth. A fifth part of a knight’s fee, held of the said bishop, who holds in like manner; and a fourth part of a knight’s fee, held of the earl of Lincoln, as of the honor of Bolyngbrok, and the earl holds it of the king in chief by knight’s service.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. (indented) taken at Aynho, Tuesday after the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 41 Edward III.
Aynho. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the hospital of St. James and St. John thereto belonging, and a view of frankpledge held once a year at the Decollation of St. John the Baptist. The extent includes a common oven, a fishery in the water of Charewell, and works of ploughing to be done by certain tenants of Croulton, to wit, to plough 9a. yearly of the demesne lands of the manor. The manor with the advowson of the hospital he held of the earl of Hereford by homage and fealty; and the view of frankpledge of Robert de Holand, knight, rendering 6s. 8d. yearly.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE. Inq. taken before John de Stanhop, mayor and escheator, 1 September, 41 Edward III.
Newcastle upon Tyne. A messuage held of the king in free burgage for 3d. yearly, rendering therefrom to the heirs of John de Denton 20s. yearly; and a rent of 118l. 12s. 11 1/2d. out of the issues of the king’s customs and subsidies in the port of Newcastle by the hands of the collectors or farmers thereof.

CUMBERLAND. Inq. (indented) (fn. 1) taken at Penreth, Tuesday after the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 41 Edward III.
Ralph de Nevile, knight, died seised of 51l. 7s. 1/2d. of a certain rent in the county called cornage payable at the Assumption for the whole year. He held it to him and his heirs of the king in chief by grant of the king, saving to the king the homages, wardships, reliefs and all other services of all the tenants who render the said farm called cornage.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken in the castle at Newcastle upon Tyne, Thursday after the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, 41 Edward III.
Corbrigg. A yearly rent of 40l. issuing from the town and borough, granted by the king’s charter to him and his heirs for ever. The said town and borough are held of the king in chief by service of rendering the yearly rent aforesaid.
Wollore. A yearly rent of 20l. issuing from a moiety of the town, held for his life. The said moiety is held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Neuburn. The manor (extent given) with its members, held for life, by an indenture shewn at this inquisition, by grant of Henry de Percy, deceased, late lord of Alnewyk. The extent includes a fishery in the river Tyne, a coal mine, a hamlet called Botelawe, a waste plot called Deuelawe, a hamlet called Walbotle, a rent of 18d. called ‘place silver,’ and a free farm of 15s. 7d. issuing from the town of Throklawe. The reversion of the manor and its members after the death of Ralph de Nevill belongs to Henry de Percy the father, lord of Alnewyk, son and heir of Henry de Percy, deceased, late lord of Alnewyk. The manor of Werkworth, whereof the said manor of Neuburn is parcel, is held of the king in chief by knight’s service.

YORK. Inq. taken at York, 28 August, 41 Edward III.
Sutton in Galtres. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee. There are no knight’s fees belonging to the manor.
Shirefhoton. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee. The extent includes a park with deer, a close called ‘Boulfuschcroftes’ held of the king in chief by service of rendering [14]s. 4d. at Michaelmas by the hands of the sheriff, a close called ‘le Cotegarth,’ and rents &c. at Westlillyng, Touthorp in les Thistels and Briddale, which are appurtenances of the manor. The underwritten fees belong to the manor and were held of Ralph de Nevill unless otherwise stated:—
Hoton. A carucate of land (whereof 8 bovates make one caru-cate and 15 carucates one knight’s fee), held by the vicar of Hoton by homage and knight’s service, and he makes one appearance yearly at the court of Hoton next after Michaelmas; a messuage and a carucate of land held by William Stabler by service in all respects as above; 3 tofts and 1 1/2 carucates held by Thomas Dautry by service as above; and a toft and 4 bovates of land held by Adam Staynlayman by service in all respects as above.
Westlillyng. A messuage and a carucate and 2 bovates of land held by John de Bulmere by homage as above, whereof 5 carucates make one knight’s fee; and a moiety of a carucate of land held by William son of Robert de Lillyng, John Stabler, and Emma late the wife of William son of Gilbert by homage as above.
Cornburgh. A messuage and 7 carucates of land held by John son of Edmund de Thwenges by knight’s service, whereof 7 1/2 carucates make one knight’s fee; and a messuage and 2 carucates and 5 bovates of land held by Hamo de Hessay by service as above.
Ferlyngton. A messuage and 5 carucates and 3 bovates of land held by Brian de Stapilton and Alice his wife in right of the latter, whereof 5 carucates make one knight’s fee, by service as above; and a messuage and a carucate of land held by Ivo de Thornton by knight’s service as above.

Staynesby. 4 carucates of land held by Peter de Malo Lacu by knight’s service.
Middelham. The castle and manor, with Carleton and Coverdale, Aykesgarth, Thornton Rust, Crakhale, Welle, Neuton by Patrikbrompton, and Herneby (extent given), held by the said Ralph de Nevill of the earl of Richmond by knight’s service. The extent includes the castle, worth nothing within the walls, two parks with deer, a close of pasture called ‘le Westfeld,’ and the following:—
Carleton. 9d. rent of free tenants, 14l. 14s. rent of tenants at will and 60 works of making hay at the lord’s food.
Coverdale. Vaccaries called ‘Swynsate,’ ‘Hyndelaythwate,’ ‘Arkilsate,’ ‘Slaypegill,’ ‘Wolfedale,’ ‘Bradlay,’ ‘Horshous,’ ‘Gameschete’ and ‘Flemeshepe.’
Aykesgarth. 4l. rent of tenants at will, a watermill and a fulling-mill.
Thornton Rust. 6s. 4d. rent of free tenants, and rents of 1lb. pepper and 2lbs. cummin.
Crakhale. A chief messuage, various rents of tenants at will, free tenants, tenants in bondage and cottars, a watermill, a fullingmill, a brewhouse, a common oven, the herbage of the chapel garden, and various meadows.
Welle. 15s. rent of ‘le Stubbyng,’ rents of tenants in bondage and cottars, a watermill, a brewhouse, a common oven, rents of tenants at will of the demesnes, and a wood called ‘Cauntewod.’
Neuton. Rents of free tenants and tenants at will.
Herneby. A messuage and a bovate of land held by tenants at will.
Thoraldeby. The manor (extent given) with the town of Neubiggyng (extent given) and the advowson of the church of Aykesgarth, held of the earl of Richmond by knight’s service. He held the manor for life, with remainder in tail male to Robert de Nevill, his son, and with reversion to himself and his heirs. He held the town with the advowson in his demesne as of fee. The extent of the manor includes a fulling-mill, a brewhouse with an oven, rents of free tenants at Burton, rents of tenants at will in Walden, rents of tenants at will at Bysschopdale, a vaccary called ‘Kiddestanes,’ herbage of ‘le Langecotes,’ ‘le Nordengaill,’ ‘Swynwathecote’ and ‘le Heynynges,’ and the following fees:—
Spenyngthorn. 5 carucates of land.
Ulshowe. A moiety of a carucate of land.
Estbolton. 3 carucates of land.

Gaytenby. 4 carucates of land held by the heir of Thomas de Ask and by Stephen Maulovell by knight’s service, whereof 8 carucates make one knight’s fee.

Stokeslay. The manor with its members, held of the said Ralph by Robert de Euere by service of 4 knight’s fees.
Caldconyngeston. The manor (extent given), held by the aforesaid Ralph of Roger de Clyfford, as of the castle of Skipton, by knight’s service. The following fees belong to the manor:—
Crakhowe. 4 carucates of land held by the prior of Marton by knight’s service, whereof 12 carucates make one knight’s fee; 1 1/2 carucates of land held by the prior of Bolton by knight’s service, as above; and half a carucate of land held by Robert del Vikers of Marton by knight’s service, as above.

Brynsale and Thorp by Brynsall. A carucate of land held by Richard de Hepeden by knight’s service; and a carucate of land held by the heir of Brian de Normanvill by knight’s service, as above.
Conyngeston. A carucate of land held by Robert de Clyderhowe by knight’s service, as above; 5 bovates of land held by John son of William by knight’s service, as above; and 2 bovates of land held by Thomas de Syngilton by knight’s service, as above.
Hapiltrewyk and Wodhouse. A carucate of land held by the prior of Marton by knight’s service, as above.
(Unspecified.) 3 carucates of land held by Edmund Talbot of the heir of Thomas Mauhaut, and by the said heir of Ralph aforesaid, by knight’s service, as above; 6 carucates of land held by Robert son of Hugh de Euere by knight’s service, as above; and 2 carucates of land held by the prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England by knight’s service, as above.
Hertelyngton. 2 carucates of land held by William de Hertelyngton by knight’s service, as above.
Faxflete. The manor, with appurtenances in Southcave, held by the said Ralph de Nevill for life by the king’s grant, with remainder to John de Stryvelyn, knight, and his heirs, likewise by the king’s grant. The manor is held of Sir John de Moubray by knight’s service.
Kirkeby on Querf. The manor, with tenements in Grymmeston and Milford, held by the said Ralph for life by grant of Robert de Nevill, the elder, of Horneby, with remainder to Robert de Nevill of Horneby, son of Robert aforesaid, and his heirs. The manor is held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Pontefract, by knight’s service.
Rand. 100s. rent from the manor, which manor Robert de Rouclyff, knight, holds for life at the said rent, with reversion to Ralph and his heirs. The manor is held of the earl of Richmond by knight’s service.
Bouthom by York. A messuage, held by John de Thornton for life by grant of the said Ralph, rendering therefor 20s. yearly to Ralph and his heirs, with reversion to them. It is held of the king in burgage of the city of York.
Thorperawe by Smetheton. A cottage, held by the said Ralph of the bishop of Durham by fealty; and 8 messuages and 8 bovates of land rendering 64s. yearly, held by the same Ralph for the life of John Haunsard of the bishop of Durham by fealty.
Horneby by Smetheton. 8 tofts and 8 bovates of land rendering 48s. yearly, held by the same Ralph for the life of the said John, with remainder to the latter’s right heirs. The premises are held of the bishop of Durham by fealty.
Aykesgarth, Middelham and Fysshelak. The advowsons of the churches.
Welle. The advowson of the hospital, which is held of Ralph and his heirs in perpetual alms.
The said Ralph had no other lands, fees or advowsons in the county.

The said Ralph held the reversion of the manor (extent given) after the death of Alexander de Nevill, his brother, who held it for life with the king’s licence by grant of Ranulf de Nevill, his father, deceased, with reversion after his death to the said Ranulf and his heirs. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee. The reversion belonged to Ralph, now deceased, and his heirs, and now belongs to the aforesaid John de Nevill and his heirs as Ralph’s son and heir. Alexander died on 15 March last, whereupon Ralph entered into the manor and held it at his death. The extent includes 3 fish stews on the demesne, worth nothing because of the destruction wrought by ‘les oters,’ a close called ‘le Westclose,’ 4 1/2a. meadow in ‘les Marsdales,’ 2a. meadow in ‘les Bradenges,’ a wood in common called ‘le Raskelffwod,’ and the following fees:—
Skelton. A messuage and 2 bovates of land held by John de Scotherskelf by knight’s service and suit to the court of Raskelff twice a year.
Asmonderby. Tenements held by John de Acastre of York by knight’s service and suit to the court of Raskelff every three weeks.
Thormotby. A messuage, 6 bovates of land and 9a. meadow held by John son of John Mynyot by knight’s service; a messuage, 8 bovates of land, 5a. meadow and 33a. of ‘forland’ held by the heir of Alexander de Barkworth by knight’s service; and a toft and 2 bovates of land held by Robert Blaumfrount by knight’s service. Also there are at Thormotby rents of 4s. and 1lb. cummin.
The said Alexander held no other lands or fees in the escheator’s bailiwick.

LONDON. Inq. taken before the mayor, 2 July, 41 Edward III.
The said William died on 20 January, 40 Edward III, seised of a rent of 44l. 8s. 10 1/2d., parcel of 100 marks which the present king gave by charter to Sir John de Pulteney, knight, his father, and the heirs male of his body, to be received yearly as follows, to wit, 50l. from the Queenhithe (de Ripa Regine) of the city of London and 16l. 13s. 4d. from the farm of the city by the hands of the sheriffs. Of the said 100 marks Sir Nicholas de Loveyne, knight, and Margaret his wife hold a third part as dower of the latter after the death of the said John de Pulteneye, her former husband.
He had no other lands &c. in the city.
He died without heir of his body. Robert de Pulteney, ….., aged 25 years and more, is his heir.
Writ to the mayor of London, reciting the contents of the above inquisition and ordering him, after taking the oath of Margaret late the wife of the said William not to marry without the king’s licence, to assign to her her reasonable dower of the said 44l. 8s. 10 1/2d. 8 July, 41 Edward III.
Certificate by the mayor that on 20 September, 41 Edward III, having taken the oath of the said Margaret, as required, he assigned to her 14l. 16s. 3 1/2d. from the farm of the city as her third part of the said 44l. 8s. 10 1/2d. rent.

He held the following of the king in chief for the lives of himself and Joan his wife, deceased, by feoffment of Nicholas Wethergrave and John Camboun, with remainder in tail male to Henry his son, by a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence:—
Byry Pomeray [and] Hurburton. 38 knights’ fees.
Byry Pomeray and Stokelegh Pomeray. The manors (extents given), held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee.
Hurburton. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
Brixham. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
He held no other lands &c.
He died on Friday before SS. Simon and Jude, 41 Edward III. The aforesaid Henry son of Henry, knight, is his heir; but he will enjoy nothing by hereditary right, but by right of acquisition in form aforesaid.
