LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Lincoln, Friday after Michaelmas, 41 Edward III. (Twenty-four jurors.)
Canwyk. The manor, with 23a. land in Canwyk, held jointly with Orframinna his wife, to them and the heirs of Walter, by a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence, to wit, one moiety of the manor of the king in chief by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee, and the other moiety of Roger Lestraunge of Halton by homage and fealty and service of 16s. yearly.
Colby. The manor ‘del Southhalle’ and 10 marks yearly rent, similarly held of John duke of Lancaster by service of 2s. yearly or a sore sparrowhawk; and a carucate of land, similarly held of Hugh de Swynford and John de Holand by suit to their court in Colby every three weeks and by service of 16s. yearly.
Morton. A messuage, 2 ruined cottages, a bovate of land and 12s. yearly rent, similarly held of the prior of the hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England by service of 4s. 6d. yearly.
Haconby. 2 1/2a. meadow, similarly held of the heirs of Robert Tiffour by service of 2d. yearly.
Aslakby. 2 1/2a. meadow, similarly held of Thomas de Felton by service of 1 1/2d.; and 3a. 1/2r. land, similarly held of the prior of Sempyngham by service of 6d. yearly.
Poynton. An empty (vacuum) garden, 5a. land and 1/2a. meadow, similarly held of Philip Spenser by service of 2s. 6d. yearly.
Billyngburgh. 2 cottages empty and in ruins, 8a. land and 1 1/2a. meadow, similarly held of Edward prince of Wales by the foreign service.
Lincoln. 12 messuages worth 100s. a year and no more because 4 of them have stood empty without a tenant for the last three years, a cottage, 4 small shops, 2 plots and a garden, worth nothing because empty and unenclosed, and 9s. rent, held in his demesne as of fee. All the premises are held of the king as parcel of the said city by service of rendering 1d. called ‘landtolpeny’ to the bailiffs of Lincoln for each messuage, shop, plot and garden, in aid of the city’s farm. The said Walter in his testament and last will bequeathed the premises in Lincoln to the said Orframinna for her life.
He died on 2 August, 41 Edward III. Robert his son, aged 14 years and more, is his heir.

RUTLAND. Inq. (indented) taken at Markesoverton (sic), 28 May, 41 Edward III.
Markestoverton (sic). Two-thirds of a messuage, and of 51a. arable and la. meadow, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, together with the reversion of a third part after the death of Maud de Sussex, who survives and holds it by way of dower.
He held no other lands &c. in the county, or elsewhere so far as the jurors know.
He died on 28 April last. Robert, son of Thomas his son, aged 6 years on 15 March last, is his heir.

Suydeleye. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by barony.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on the morrow of St. Laurence last. Thomas, son of Joan his elder sister and William le Botiler, knight, formerly her husband, aged 12 years at the feast of All Saints last, and Margery, younger sister of the deceased, aged 30 years and more, are his heirs.

WORCESTER. Inq. taken at Forvelde, Monday before St. Martin, 41 Edward III.
He held the following lands &c. to him and the heirs of his body by gift of John de Sudleye, knight, his father, with remainder to his right heirs:—
Forveld. The manor (extent given), held of the prior of Coventry by service of rendering a rose at Midsummer.
Shirrevelench. A messuage, a carucate of arable, 5a. meadow, 6l. rents of free tenants and customers, including a rent at Chirchlench, and pleas &c. of court worth 18d. yearly, held of the earl of Warwick, service not known.
Wich. 17s. rent from various free tenants, and 18 mitts of salt payable by the same tenants at Martinmas, each mitt worth 10d. and not more because they are of the smaller measurement, held of the said earl by service of doing fealty.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
Date of death as above. Thomas, son of William le Botiler of Weme, knight, and of Joan sister of the deceased, aged 12 years, and Margery, also his sister, aged 30 years, are his heirs.

WARWICK. Inq. (indented) taken at Chepyngderset, Saturday after St. Martin, 41 Edward III.
Chepyngderset. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, except 300a. arable, 10l. rent, 10a. meadow, a windmill called ‘le Stonmilne’ which has long been in ruins, and a moiety of a rabbit warren, which he held of Peter de Monteforti, knight, in fee tail by service of a pair of gloves yearly.
Grive. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, rendering to the king 6s. 3d. yearly by the hands of the sheriff.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

Writ of certiorari to Thomas de Ingelby and John de Cavendissh, justices of assize in the county of Warwick, as to the true value of the manors of Derset and Gryve, directing them to cause the said manors to be extended during their sessions according to the information of John Bernard, who sues for the king in this behalf. 16 February, 42 Edward III.

Knytkote. A fourth part of a knight’s fee, held by William de Peytoe.
Derset. A fourth part of a knight’s fee in ‘le North Ende,’ held by William Mabot; and an eighth part of a knight’s fee, held by John Rawlynes.
Derset. The prior of Erbury in time of vacancy shall present to the vicarage of Derset at the nomination of the lord de Sudleye.
Gryve. A seventh part of a knight’s fee, held by Thomas de Merynton.
Erbury. The priory is of the foundation of the lords of Gryve, ancestors of the said John de Sudleye, and at each new creation of a prior three canons ought to be elected by common election of the canons and presented to the lords of Gryve, who shall remit one of them to the bishop of the place to be admitted by him.

Catteangre. A messuage, a dovecote, a garden, 132a. arable, 19a. meadow several from the Purification until the hay is carried, pastures called ‘Blyndeheye,’ ‘Langelese,’ and ‘Litelorchard,’ a wood of 20a., rents of 36s. 2d., and pleas &c. of court worth 40d. yearly, held of the king in chief by service of an eighth (octavane) part of a knight’s fee.
He died on Wednesday the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr last. Frank (Franco) his son, aged 26 years and more, is his heir.

He died on 20 December last. Hawise his sister, aged 40 years and more, Alan son of Joan his second sister, who was the wife of Thomas le Botiler, knight, Alan’s father, aged 19 1/2 years at the Purification last, and Katharine daughter of Hugh le Chyld son of Margaret his third sister, aged 12 years at the Annunciation last, are his heirs.

DERBY. Inq. taken at Derby. Thursday the feast of the Ascension, 41 Edward III.
He died on April 9 in the castle of Shepey. Hugh his brother, aged 16 years, is his heir. He held:—
Brough (de Burgo). Two-thirds of the mill, held of the king in chief by service of finding a man to carry with the king a heroner (falconem herenarium) for the whole season at the king’s cost, receiving from the king two robes a year and such wages as other esquires receive; and 3 messuages and 3 bovates of land, held of Philippa queen of England.
Heselbache. A messuage, held of Samson de Strenley, knight, and 2 carucates of land, 6 cottages, and 34s. 4d. rent.
Rep[indon], A tenth part of the lordship (extent given), held of the duke of Lancaster; and a sixth part of the watermill, a sixth part of the common oven, two-thirds of the wood, a sixth part of the hundred, and rents of 10s. 10d.

CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Carlisle, Monday the eve of St. Matthew, 41 Edward III.
Hoghton. The manor, and two-thirds of Scalby as parcel of the manor (extents given). The extent of Hoghton includes divers free tenants holding of the said Robert, to wit:—
Fourhowe. William de Artureth held two-thirds of the town by homage and service of rendering 8s. 10d. yearly.
Hoghton Park. William Bysset held a close so called by service of rendering 1lb. of pepper yearly, and a turbary by rendering 12d. yearly.
Edardby. William de Eddardby held 200a. land in the hamlet by homage and service of 10s. yearly; John son of Robert de Staynton held 114a. (?) by homage and service of 4s. yearly; and Richard de Staynwykes held 107a. (?) by homage and service of 12s. yearly.
Scalby. The extent includes a castle and a park without deer.
Kirklevyngton. A third part of the manor (extent given). The extent includes the following free tenants, to wit:—Richard Diksson, who held a messuage and 8a. land by homage and service of 3d. yearly; John del Bek, Robert son of Emma and William son of Robert, each of whom held a messuage and 8a. land by homage and service of 6d. yearly; and John de Thirlewall, who held the hamlet of Astenby by homage and service of 16 1/2d. for cornage.
Kirkelevyngton. Two-thirds of the advowson of the church. The said Robert last presented thereto John Bone (?), chaplain, who survives.
The manor of Hoghton with two-thirds of the town of Scalby is held of the king in chief by homage and service of rendering 11s. 11d. yearly for cornage at the Exchequer of Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff. The deceased held the third part of Scalby of Sir Ranulf de Dacre by suit to the court of Irthington every three weeks. The said third part beyond ‘le Burne’ is worth 4l. yearly.
The third part of the manor of Kirkelevyngton was held of the king in chief by homage and service of rendering 16s. 1/2d. and a third part of a farthing for cornage at the king’s Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff.
Stapleton. A rent of 40s. issuing from lands &c.
Eston. Three tenements, now waste.
Solparth. The manor, held jointly with Felicia his wife, who survives, of E. prince of England in right of his wife, as of the manor of Lidele, by homage and service of rendering 7 1/2d. for cornage.
Ricardby. The manor, held jointly with Felicia, his wife, of the bishop of Carlisle by service of rendering 13s. 4d. yearly.
Ireby. The site of the capital messuage of the manor within the moat (fossatum aquaticum) which surrounds it, held of Anthony de Lucy by homage and service of rendering 3d. yearly for cornage.
Carlisle. A waste messuage and a rent of 20s. issuing from 2 tenements.
Scolitelgarth. Tenements worth 13s. 4d. yearly in herbage, held of William de Moulcastre by fealty.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Wednesday in the fifth week of Lent last. Peter Tilliol, his son, aged 11 years at the feast of SS. Peter and Paul last, is his heir.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Lyndeselis, Wednesday before the Ascension, 41 Edward III.
Lyndeselis. The manor, held for his life by the courtesy of England after the death of Margaret, his first wife, as of her right and inheritance. It is held of the king in chief by service of 4s. yearly payable by the hands of the sheriff, and by doing suit to the general county (courts) of Essex held next after Michaelmas and Easter.
He died on 13 April last. Robert, son of the said John and Margaret, aged 26 years and more, is their heir.

CAMBRIDGE. Inq. (fn. 3) (indented) taken at Hardleston, 16 June, 41 Edward III.
Hardleston. He alienated the manor (extent given) in 36 Edward III to Andrew de Wauton, Clement de Brethenham, Philip Chamberleyn and Richard Basly, clerk, so that by a fine levied in the king’s court they might enfeoff him and Elizabeth his wife thereof, to hold to them and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs. The said John and Elizabeth were enfeoffed accordingly long before John’s death. The manor is held of the earl of Kent, service not known.
He died on Tuesday after Palm Sunday. Robert Tibetot, his son, aged 23 years and more, is his heir.
CAMBRIDGE. Inq. (indented) taken at Borewell, 15 June, 41 Edward III.
Burghwell. Long before his death, in 35 Edward III, he alienated the manor to Andrew Wawton, Clement Brethenham and Philip Chamberleyn, and they afterwards demised it to him by indenture for a term of years which still endures, the reversion belonging to the said feoffees. The manor is held of the earl of Richmond, service not known.

Netlisted. Blakynham Parva, Braunford, Somersham and Beylham. 240a. land, 30a. meadow, 4a. pasture, 3a. wood, a park, and 4l. rent, and the advowson of the church of Blakynham Parva, similarly held jointly in fee tail by grant of the same Ralph. Souendon. The manor (extent given), held for life, as of the right of Margaret his wife, one of the heirs of Bartholomew de Bateslemere, of the earl Marshal by service of 1/2d. yearly. The extent includes a park enclosed, in which are 8 quarters (quart’) of underwood, each containing 30a.

Hamelden. The manor (extent given), and the advowson of the church, held of the king, as of the honor of Cristeschirch, for life, as of the right of Margaret his wife, daughter and one of the heirs of Bartholomew Bateslemere, of the inheritance of count Adomar, by the serjeanty of finding a tent (velamen) for the king or carrying it in time of war.

Chatham by Rochester. The manor (extent given), held for life by the courtesy of England of the inheritance of Margaret his wife, deceased. The extent includes rents of 1lb. cummin, price 4d., 1/2lb. of cummin, price 2d., from Thomas de Gylyngham, a pair of gloves, price 1d., of old [custom], and a caltrop (tribolus), price 1d., (fn. 5) a fair at the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, worth 20s. in ordinary years, and another at the feast of St. Bartholomew, worth 10d.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Notyngham, Monday after St. John before the Latin Gate, 41 Edward III.
Langar. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, except 16 messuages, 21 bovates and 6 1/2a. of land, held for life by gift of John de Sandale, parson of the church of Arkesay, and John de Kyneton, parson of the church of Radclif, by a fine levied in the king’s court in the octave of Trinity, 22 Edward III, with remainder to Robert Tibtot and his issue by Margaret daughter of William Deyncourt, and with remainder over to the heirs of John aforesaid. The extent includes herbage in ‘le Shypin Croft’ and other places, and leets twice a year, after Easter and Michaelmas. He held the manor of the king, as of the honor of Peverel, which is in the king’s hand, by service of one knight’s fee and a half and 10s. at Michaelmas.
Epirston. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held for life by gift of William Deyncourt, formerly lord of Graneby, and Thomas de Hameldene, parson of the church of Potterhaynworth, of John de Oddingsels, as of the barony of Long Ichyngton, by knight’s service, and not of the king; with remainder to the aforesaid Robert and Margaret and the heirs of their bodies. The extent includes an enclosed park with deer.

He died on 3 April last. Miles, aged 14 years and more, son and heir of James de Wyndesore son and heir of the said Richard, is the latter’s heir.
SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Aulton, 12 June, 41 Edward III.
Isyngton. A messuage and a meadow, held of the king for life, as of the manor of the forest of Wolvemere, by service of 2s. yearly, by the courtesy of England of the inheritance of Juliana his late wife, deceased; 3 crofts of land, held of the king, as of the assart of the same forest, of the said inheritance by service of 8s. 6d. yearly; and the manor of La Mulle, held of Eustace de Daubryggescourt, as of his manor of Aulton, by service of 4l. 5s. 6d. yearly and by suit to his court there every three weeks, of the same inheritance.
Froille. A virgate of land and a small pasture, held of the abbess of St. Mary, Winchester, by service of 7s. 3d. and a capon yearly, and by suit to her court at Froille every three weeks, of the same inheritance.
Isyngton. A croft called ‘Rycroft,’ held of the abbot of Waverleye by service of 3s. yearly, of the same inheritance.

MIDDLESEX. Inq. taken at Brayneford, 10 May, 41 Edward III.
Stanwell. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief as parcel of a barony, to wit, by service of two knights’ fees, as the jurors understand. The extent includes several pastures called ‘Bardesmede,’ ‘Renmed’ and ‘Housegardyn,’ and rents of 24 capons at the Annunciation and three quarters of eels on Ash Wednesday. In respect of the above the said Richard was wont to pay the following yearly rents resolute, to wit, for ward of the castle of Wyndesore 16s. 8d. every 40 days for his lands &c. in the counties of Middlesex, Surrey, Buckingham, Berks and Southampton, to the abbess of Borneham of the county of Buckingham 15s. every 24 weeks, and in the other time of the year 13s. 4d., and to the lord of the manor of Huntercombe, co. Berks, 26s. 8d.

WILTS. Inq. made at Ambresbury, 25 September, 41 Edward III.
Derneforde Magna, Derneforde Parva and Tudderle. The manors, held jointly with Isabel his wife, who survives, of the earl of Salisbury by knight’s service, with a further charge of 12s. yearly to the abbess of Wilton, by reason of a gift of the said manors which John de Newenham, clerk, John Curteys and William de Wodehull made to him and Isabel aforesaid and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 3 July last. Elizabeth, aged 3 years, and Eleanor, aged 2 years, his daughters by the said Isabel, are his heirs.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. (indented) taken at Pateshull, 12 October, 41 Edward III.
Pateshull. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief as parcel of the barony of Wodhull. The extent includes a garden called ‘le Grove,’ and in the garden two fishponds of no value because not cleansed or stocked.

He died in parts beyond seas on Saturday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last. Heirs as above.

BEDFORD. Inq. (indented) taken at Bedford, Thursday after St. Hugh, 41 Edward III.
Wodhull and Langeford. A certain Eleanor de Wodhull held these manors of the king in chief by gift of Robert de la Haye made with the king’s licence to her and John de Wodhull, formerly her husband, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John. Eleanor with the king’s licence granted her estate in the said manors to John, son of the said John and Eleanor, and his heirs, reserving to herself during her life a yearly rent of 100 marks from the manors, which rent she granted to one Thomas de Reynes, knight, for the duration of her life, and he was seised thereof accordingly. John de Wodhull, knight, at his death held the said manors of the king in chief, but by what service the jurors know not. The extent includes 2 holmes of meadow, to wit, Rene Holme and Mulle Holme, a parcel of pasture called ‘Beryhamme,’ 7 roods of pasture at Mededich, and a fishery.

BEDFORD. Inq. (indented) taken at Wodhull, Tuesday the eve of Michaelmas, 41 Edward III.
Wodhull and Langeford. The account of the tenure of the manors is a repetition of the above, but the extent of Wodhull differs somewhat, and includes a fishpond, a watermill rendering yearly at farm 28 quarters of ‘tolcorn,’ price 2s. 8d. a quarter, water gates worth 10s. a year, a several fishery in the water of Owse, and a market every Thursday, for which the king receives by the hands of the sheriff of the county 10s. yearly. There is due from the manor to the castle of Rokyngham 51s. called ‘castel[ward].’ Certain lands &c. in Parva Wodhull, seized into the king’s hand as parcels of the manor, are not parcels thereof but are held of the lady de Wake. Long before his death, in 39 Edward III, the said John enfeoffed Laurence Pabenham, knight, John Curteys, Thomas de Reynes and William de Wodhull of a place called Cattesho and other lands &c. in Wodhull Parva, a messuage, a dovecote, 2a. of land, a parcel of meadow called ‘Clifton Holme’ which is held of the prior ‘del Hospitall.’ a meadow called ‘Lices mede’ which is held of Gerard de Braybrok, a meadow called ‘Holme over ye Water’ which is held of the abbot of Warden, 1 1/2r. of meadow in Stanfordmede held of the same, and a fishery in the water of Ouse in Chelvyngton from the bridge of Harewold to the fishpond of Wodhull and from the mill of Wodhull to the mill of Felmersham, and four quarters of the wood of Wodhull, to wit, Esthey quarter, Chaldewell quarter, Coldewell quarter and le Mare quarter, which are also held of the lady de Wake, and all other his lands &c. in the county which are not held of the king.
