Edmund

First preb. in cats., 'Edmundus'. Occ. as can. twice only: 1103/4 (WD 4 fo. 40/ 44r-v, pd. in Rep. p. 65a), and 1104/5 (WD 4 fo. 19/23r-v, pd. in Rep. p. 61b). Possibly to be identified with Edmund son of Algot, who occ. holding a mill in Stepney of bp. of London in 1086 (Domesday Book 1 fo. 127b), and with Edmund brother of Raulf son of Algot, who occ. early twelfth cent. (Liber Vitae Dunelm.: Facsimile, ed. A. H. Thompson (Surtees Soc. cxxxvi) fo. 42r). Perhaps, therefore, brother of Ralph son of Algod, preb. of Rugmere (see below p. 74).

William [de Mareni]

Occ. in cats. between Edmund and Nigel of Calne, 'Willelmus decanus'. Almost certainly to be identified with William de Mareni, who does not occ. as can., but became dean by July 1111. Prob. transf. to preb. of Totenhall after 1112 or 1113.

Nigel of Calne (fn. 1)

Occ. in cats. between William [de Mareni] and Richard de Amanvilla, 'Nigellus nepos Rogeri Sarum' (Cat. I), 'Nigellus' (Cat. II). Does not occ. as can. As chapl. of king Henry I, occ. c. 1112-1120 (Regesta 11 nos. 1018-1231). Nephew of Roger Le Poer, bp. of Salisbury (1107-39) (cf. Gesta Stephani, ed. K. R. Potter (1955) p. 48), and father of Richard Fitz Neal (see below). Bp. of Ely, el. May, cons. Oct. 1133.

Richard de Amanvilla

Occ. in cats. between Nigel of Calne and Richard Fitz Neal, 'Ricardus de Amanvilla [Amavilla, Cat. II]'. First occ. as can. before Apr. 1138 (Hale p. 124). (fn. 2) Last occ. c. 1140 or a little later (WD 4 fos. 30/34v-31/35r, pd. in Rep. p. 64b). (fn. 3)

Richard Fitz Neal (fn. 4)

Occ. in cats. between Richard de Amanvilla and William Coroner, 'Ricardus thesaurarius'. Prob. occ. this preb. 1181 (Hale p. 151; cf. G.F. p. 278). Occ. this preb. before 1189 (A/34/806). Ralph of Ely

Occ. in cats. between William Coroner and Alan, 'Radulphus Helu'. Occ. as can. [c. Jan. 1190 × 1192] (Hist. MSS. Comm., Rep. Var. Coll. vii 28; (fn. 5) Cheney, Eng. Bps.' Chanceries p. 156 (fn. 6) ), and c. 1192 (D.S.R. II). Occ. prob. this preb. before May 1201 (A/29/332; cf. B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 166v, from an original deed formerly in a St. Paul's pyx). (fn. 7) Also archdcn. of Middlesex from c. 1198, to after Sept. 1203.

Alan

Occ. in cats. between Ralph of Ely and John Belemains, 'Alanus clericus domini pape I. iii' (Cat. I), 'Alanus clericus domini pape' (Cat. II). Not otherwise known, unless to be identified with M. Alan, English canonist at Bologna (see C. N. L. Brooke, in Hist. St. Paul's p. 46). Innocent III was pope, el. Jan., crowned Feb. 1198; d. July 1216.

John Belemains

Occ. in cats. between Alan and William of Bath, 'Johannes Belemens [Belemeyns, Cat. II]'. Prob. transf. from preb. of Weldland to this preb. before Oct. 1217. First occ. as can. 1225/6 (reg. J. Stokesley: Guildhall Libr., MS. 9531/11 fo. 152v), (fn. 8) and perhaps earlier, [c. 1216 × ?Apr. 1222] (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 133r-v, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'T'). (fn. 9) Occ. this preb. [Nov. 1229 × Jan. 1232] (Gibbs no. 207), and on last certain occ., 26 June 1252 (Visitations 1249-52 p. 8), but may occ. later, [1246 × March 1253] (A/39/1364), (fn. 10) and [May 1251 × Apr. 1254] (A/9/281). Edmund of Bath

Occ. in cats. between William of Bath and Richard de Gravesend, 'Edmundus de Bathonia'. Occ. as can. twice only: 8 Aug. 1279 (A/25/1708), and 19 Apr. 1281 (C.C.R. 1279-88 p. 119). D. before Dec. 1292 (Reg. Winchelsey 11 1148).

M. Richard de Gravesend II

Occ. in cats. between Edmund of Bath and William de Scotho, 'Ricardus de Gravesend [Gravesand, Cat. II]'. First occ. as can. 17 July 1289 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 30v, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's 'in thecis'). Occ. this preb. c. 1294 (Liber F valor). (fn. 12) Also successively archden. of London, by Sept. 1294; treas. from before Sept. 1302, to d. in March 1330.
