Saturday, the 23d of July, 1653.

Customs.

A BILL for compelling the late Farmers of the Customs, and their Under-Sharers, to pay their proportionable Shares and Parts of the Composition of One hundred and Fifty thousand Pounds, formerly paid to the Use of the Commonwealth, by some of the said Farmers, was this Day read the Second time; and, upon the Question, committed to the Committee of Trade: Who have Power to send for Persons, Papers, Records, and Witnesses.

Relief of Tenants.

Ordered, That it be referred to a Committee to consider how Relief may be given unto Tenants against the Oppression of Delinquent, Malignant, or Popish Landlords, or Lords of Manors; and to prepare an Act for that Purpose; and report it to the House: Viz. To the Committee of the Law.

The humble Petition of some of the Tenants of the Manor of Spalding, in the County of Lincoln, whose Names are hereunto subscribed, was this Day read.

The Question being put, That this be referred to a Committee, upon the whole Debate of this House;

It passed in the Negative.

Leave of Absence.

Resolved, That Colonel Bennett shall have Leave, for some Time, to go into the Country about his necessary Occasions.

The Question being put, That he have Leave to be absent for Two Months;

It passed in the Negative.

Resolved, That he have Leave to be absent for Six Months.

Judges of Admiralty.

Colonel Sidenham reports, from the Council of State, That they have taken Consideration of Persons to be Judges of the Admiralty; and cannot find any Persons more fit than those whom they formerly did present; and Lislebone Long Esquire to be added to them.

Resolved, That Dr. Godolphine shall be one of the Judges of the Admiralty.

The Question being put, That Dr. Turner be one of the Judges of the Admiralty;

It passed in the Negative.

Resolved, That Lislebone Long be one of the Judges of the Admiralty.

Resolved, That there be Three Judges of the Admiralty.

The Question being put, That there be more than Three Judges of the Admiralty;

It passed in the Negative.

The Question being propounded, That there be a Civil Lawyer in the Place of the Third Judge of the Admiralty;

And the Question being put, That that Question be now put;

The House was divided.
The Noes went forth.

So it passed in the Negative.

Resolved, &c. That this Debate be adjourned till Monday Morning next.
