Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Earl of St. Albans and
the other Trustees of the Queen Mother's jointure. Sir Peter
Ball, Kt., Attorney General to the late Queen Mother, certified
me on the 9th Nov. last, that about 1660 one Peter Peddar,
employed by grant from the said Queen to be bailiff and
collector of her rents within the manor of Spalding, was
suspended in 1663 for not accompting, and proceedings had
against him and his sureties, but nothing of satisfaction ever
obtained, some of the said sureties dying in prison and the
said bailiff insolvent. In Feb., 1664-5, said bailiff had his
account stated by the Auditor for co. Lincoln, showing a debt
of 240l. 19s. 3d., though upon the [Queen Mother's]
Receiver's account he stands charged with a greater sum,
because he did not apply his payments. A poor kinswoman
offers to pay 50l. in settlement of said debt, on condition of
said debtor's discharge. You are to accept same, discharge
the balance and deliver up his bond.

Christopher. William Smith has petitioned on behalf of himself
and John Garnet, an infant, setting forth that being
formerly an inhabitant of St. Christopher he was, in right of
his wife and said infant, possessed of a large plantation with
a personal estate in slaves, sugar, indigo and other goods, all
which, in April, 1665, when the French took the said island,
he was forced to leave, to his utter ruin. By order of Council
of July 10 last said petition was referred to Treasurer Danby,
who referred same to Sir Charles Wheeler, by whose report it
appears said allegations are true and that the plantation which
he lost might contain about 100 acres of measured land. You
are to set out, convey and grant, for the use of himself and
said infant, 100 acres of measureable land out of such land as
now belongs to the Crown in said island by reason of the not
returning of planters since the taking of said island, [being]
commonly known by the name of King's land.

Crown Lands], for a particular of the scite and demesnes of
West Harptree Guing and a cottage and parcel of land thereto
adjoining, with a view to a lease thereof to Jno. Buckland :
the late Treasurer Southampton having granted him a like
renewal for term of years or the lives of him and two of his
children in consideration that the manor of West Harptree and
other lands formerly granted by the Crown in fee were
recovered from petitioner's father by Prince Henry, as parcel
of the Duchy of Cornwall, said father being admitted to a
lease of the demesne lands, &c., at the old rent of 4l. 2s. 6d.
for term of years, determinable on the life of himself and two
sisters : the present renewal being craved by reason of the
death of one of the said children, both the said sisters
being yet living. The fine to be 60l. ; the premises being
worth 120l. per an., but petitioner's family (which previously
had the inheritance of the manor), having deserved well of
the Crown by preserving the timber, &c.

Treasurer Danby to the Principal Officers and Commissioners of
the Navy. I have received two lists of the bills in your
office and direct you to send me weekly the addition you make
to the said lists by bills passed your board ; and that you
forthwith send me an account of all the bills in those lists
which you have already assigned for payment, and upon what
money you do assign the same. And that you will appoint
one of your clerks to set off the imprests to be abated out of
each perfect bill in your list, and to do the like in your weekly
returns of the additions to be made to the said lists : and that
you satisfy yourselves why the number of the bill in your
lists is not the same with the number upon Mr. Stevens's
certificate to me of his weekly payments : as for instance, Sir
Dennis Gauden's bill of imprest on your list No. 281, and in
Mr. Stevens's certificate No. 3,701, and the like disagreement
in other bills, which I desire may be so regulated in future
that the numbers in your list and in Mr. Stevens's resume
may agree. Let me know what reserves you make out of the
weekly money paid to the Treasurer of the Navy for the
payment of this year's bills, yards and wages to seamen for
summer and winter guards. Also hasten the calling over the
books of ships paid off as far as the money will hold out
(which I desire may be husbanded with all possible care),
that I may have a complete account of the Paymaster's
payments.

Royal warrant to the Governors of Nevis, Antigua, St.
Christopher and Montserrat. By a great seal of 1670, Sept. 9,
the duty of 4 per cent. of said islands of Nevis, Antigua,
St. Christopher and Montserrat is demised to Col. John
Strode. There have been complaints formerly made of great
neglects and discouragements given to the said Farmer, for
prevention whereof a royal letter was sent to the governors of
said islands. 1673, April 4. Notwithstanding this the said
Farmer still complains of breaches of covenant, in particular
as to the weighing of sugars. For remedy hereof you are to
proceed ut supra, p 576, under date Aug. 22.

Privy seal authorising Elias Ashmole (appointed by patent of
1661, April 3, Comptroller of Excise for England, Wales and
Berwick on Tweed, which office it has hitherto been thought
sufficient to be put in execution within the city of London and
bills of mortality only) to further enlarge the execution thereof
and to put his said office in execution upon the vouchers which
are and shall be transmitted to the Farmers of Excise from all
the counties of England now in their own hands and collection,
and likewise upon their books of accounts relating to that
