Report to the King from Treasurer Danby, on the petition of
William Legge for a lease of Bowood Park. According to
Sir C. Harbord's report, said park was in 1661 granted to Sir
Orlando Bridgman, for three young lives, said to be all living, at
the rent of 30l. per an. which is payable to the Queen for life,
"and he conceives a lease of the premises for 99 years, to
commence immediately (which is the rule I have always
observed in the like cases) may be reasonably valued at 900l.,
considering that the lessee must compound with Her Majesty's
Council for her interest, or be subject to such leases as she
shall grant in her life time."

Instructions from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners
in reply to their representation of the 23rd ult.
Concerning the custom of Norfolk in computing 21 Comb to
the Last, which the merchants pray they may be allowed in
the exportation of Coleseed I allow the said measure according
to the custom of that country.
As to the ship "Salvator," a Swed[ish vessel], who went out
upon the encouragement of the declaration of 1672, May 10, to
Virginia and from which the collector of Newcastle demands
aliens' duty for some few hogsheads of tobacco, the seizure of
said ship is to be discharged, and only natives' Customs to be
charged on said tobacco.
As to Mr. Feilding's case concerning damaged tobacco put
into the proprietor's warehouse before a view, you are to take
a view thereof and allow for damage.
As to the case of Mr. Tyndall about corn at Bristol,
Tyndall is to be defended at the King's charge against such
suits as are or shall be brought against him in that matter,
"and I leave it to your discretion to try two or three of those
cases about the said corn, where you shall find the proofs are
best and plainest."
As to the beaver coats seized by Capt. Poyntz on a commission
from the Chancellor of the Exchequer, you are to
deliver said goods to their owners, and the 20s. taken from
widow Morris is to be repaid her.

entry the day following, which he did so perfect on the 22nd,
and paid all duties on the residue of said malt, being 46
quarters. But a dispute afterwards arising between Mr.
Worth, the Customer, and the petitioner about eight bushels
of malt by him demanded as fees, which petitioner refused to
give him, said Worth did about a month after seize 46 quarters
of malt on pretence same was landed without payment of
Custom.

Norwich and commend your care in giving me timely information
thereof in order to prevent uproars and disturbances
of the peace and government of that place by illegal demands,
as I do conceive those to be of which you complain. I have
communicated your letter to the persons intrusted with the
collection of that whole duty and received their assurance that
they have given express orders to their sub-collectors, and will
renew the same, not to demand or take the said duty for any
furnaces of weavers or dyers where the chimney into which
those furnaces do vent is chargeable with the said duty. I
have further charged them to require all their sub-collectors
to behave themselves civilly and respectively towards you and
all other magistrates and not dare to threaten them with
messengers. I hope you and the rest of your brethren will
take care that no certificate be signed by any of you for discharge
of the said duty but in such cases as are warranted
and directed by the law that so the King be not deceived of
his just right nor the subject oppressed by unjust levyes or

Treasurer Danby to the Commissioners of the Eighteen Months'
assessment for co. Derby. It appears by the complaint of the
Receiver [of said assessment] for your county, as also by your
order made at the first general meeting for putting in execution
the Act for the said assessment that upon complaint of the
town of Derby being overrated it was agreed that the said town
should be eased and the charge laid upon several other places
mentioned : by which means the assessment of the whole has
fallen short near 20l. in each quarterly payment. Yet neither
the said places charged nor the town of Derby have paid the
money for completing the whole assessment laid upon the
county by the Act, and notwithstanding several letters have
been sent to you by the Chancellor of the Exchequer yet your
meeting thereupon has not produced any settlement of this
matter. You are to take effectual care for the execution of your
own order or [for] raising the short money as the Act directs
to avoid further trouble to yourselves. I have directed the
said Receiver to respite the passing his account till I hear
from you.

Same to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. It has been lately
discovered that several persons do lade wool aboard vessels in
Ireland on pretence (and with security) to deliver the same at
some port in England, with the privity of the officers of the
Customs for such port, and their certificate under their hands
of their so doing, for the discharge of their said securities.
And yet, nevertheless, the said wool has not been delivered
at the port in England, to which it was consigned, but
certificates counterfeited to discharge their securities in
Ireland. To avoid this for the future, please direct the
Customers and Collectors in every port in Ireland, that upon
their giving despatch to any vessel that shall lade wool from
Ireland, they forthwith transmit a duplicate of each entry of
wool to the Treasury Office, and another duplicate thereof to
the Customs Commissioners, England, to be by them registered
in their office, and then transmitted to the port of consignment.
