Report to the King from Treasurer Danby on the petition of Sir
John Robinson for a grant of the Wardenship of Farming
Woods and other things, the remains of the Forest of Rockingham,
co. Northampton. On reference from me the
Attorney General has reported that the office of Master
Forester or Wardenship of the Forest of Rockingham was
divided in the fourth year of Charles I. into several parts.
One part thereof was granted to the Earl of Westmorland's
trustees for three lives, one other part to Lord Montagu of
Boughton for three lives ; the other part, being small, was
reserved to be granted to Lord Mordaunt, after[wards] Earl
of Peterborough, who enjoyed it but never passed any letters
patent for it. Upon the Restoration the present Earl of
Peterborough, having sold the lands he had in that part of
the forest to Sir John Robinson, did consent that he should
have the Wardenship of Farming Woods and bailiwick of
Orlingbury Hundred, which was but part of the thing desired
[by Robinson], which, being observed by Sir C. Harbord in
his report the grant was stayed because the Earl of Peterborough
had not consented to the rest of the things desired.
Since that time said Earl has consented to a grant of the rest
to petitioner. A grant may therefore be fitly made to Robinson
of the wardenship of Farming Woods, the bailiwick of the
Hundred of Orlingbury and manor of Brigstock (except
Goddington Wood) and the receivership of the Castleward
rents, either for 31 years or for term of years determinable
upon three lives.
