June 18. Royal sign manual for 40l. to John Davis gent. as royal bounty: to be payable out of Francis Holmes's composition for a forfeited recognizance. (Money warrant dated June 22 hereon.) Same to the Customs Commissioners to prepare instructions (as per the enclosed draft [missing] from the Admiralty Lords) for the Collectors of Customs in the Bahamas, Carolina, Pennsylvania, East and West New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island for their guidance in disposing of such passes as shall be sent them from the Admiralty here for securing the ships and vessels of his Majesty's subjects from the ships of Algiers. Send the instructions to Mr. J. Burchett, Secretary of the Admiralty to be sent out by him.

Treasury reference to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of the merchants of London importers of wine from San Sebastian shewing that they had the English Consul's certificate for some Spanish wine which they imported from San Sebastian, yet several suits have been commenced, but on trial a verdict is given for petitioners, but the said Commissioners being dissatisfied intend further prosecution: therefore praying a non pros. The Treasury Lords to the Lords Justices of Ireland. With reference to the royal warrant of the 11th inst. supra p. 378 for 650l. to Lady Katherine FitzGerald (in consideration of the like sum assigned by her to the King out of a greater sum due to her from Robert FitzGerald deceased under a judgment of Michaelmas term 1684 in the King's Bench in Ireland for 3000l.) it is the King's pleasure that so much of the arrears due to the said Robert as late Comptroller of the Musters in Ireland shall in the first place be applied to the repayment of the said 650l. to the King: and that no further notice be taken of the [royal] letter of 3 April last thereon supra p. 314 but that the same be revoked. Treasury warrant to the Receipt to levy a tally and draw an order for the like reversion, after some nominee now living, of the 99 years' annuity of 14l. on the Excise in the name of the Earl of Ranelagh for which he did on the 9th Sept. 1698 pay 56l. into the Receipt to take effect after the death of Samuell White of the parish of Horsham, Sussex, contributor and nominee (then supposed to be in being); it now appearing that the said White was dead before the Earl purchased the supposed reversion; by reason whereof the Earl and his assigns are deprived of the benefit of the purchase. Treasury reference to Henry Baker of the petition of Edward Anderson and Edward Edwards shewing that for two years past they have at their own expense resided in Northumberland on the borders of Scotland to prevent the owling and smuggling trade and have made several seizures of wool and obtained divers informations against rich and notorious offenders for transporting above 300 packs of wool: therefore praying encouragement. Treasury warrant to the Customs Commissioners to permit the Customs-free transport to Newfoundland, for the service of the garrison there, of 50 tons more of chalk for lime for finishing the barracks and fortifications which are making at St. John's harbour and other stores, on board the Port frigate, William Rowland master. Treasury reference to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Isaac Manley, a landsurveyor of Customs, for leave to resign his said office to Christopher Irons, petitioner being Comptroller of the Post Office, by reason whereof he cannot be at the Custom House so constantly as his duty requires him. Same to Sir Thomas Trevor, Attorney General, to acknowledge satisfaction upon record of the judgment of 500l. against Thomas Grebell and George Petter obtained in the Exchequer last Hilary term: the said Grebell having been employed in 1698 by Henry Baker several times to Calais and Dieppe and other parts in France to discover how the owling and smuggling trades there lay and did considerable service therein: and in order to make a show of some small trade he brought over some small parcels of wine and brandy for which he was sentenced as above. Royal warrant to the Lords Justices of Ireland to state the account of William Robinson, Surveyor General of Works Ireland, for the rebuilding of the Four Courts of Justices, Ireland which in 1695 he was directed by Lord Capel to perform, and which he has accordingly done at a cost of 3421l. 7s. 8½d. (towards which he has received by Concordatums at various times the sum of 1800l.): and thereupon to pay him the balance of his said account out of the revenue at large in Ireland.
