it necessary for the King's service and for the good of the public that
the Tellers' receipts and vouchers should be carefully compared with
the payments which are allowed or discharged in your, the Auditor of
the Receipt's, weekly certificates. We find that many payments
amounting to a very considerable sum are comprehended in your
said certificates where in truth the money is not really paid nor his
Majesty discharged of the same. In order to prevent the damage
which may happen thereby to the King and the public credit by so
great a neglect you are hereby to appoint some able and trusty
person who, with such person as we shall nominate, may daily or
weekly at least compare and examine the said receipts and vouchers
and certify us in all cases where they shall find the same to be

Prefixing: Said Surveyor's report on said Baker's petition for
same. I find that Thomas Cook Esq. (being Keeper of the Tennis
Court by the Cockpit by warrant under Charles II's sign manual)
did in 1674 assign his interest therein to Charles Cornwallis Esq.
and a grant of the same with the houses and buildings therewith
enjoyed was made in May 1675 to said Cornwallis at Cook's nomination for 21 years at 6s. 8d. rent. This term expired at Lady day 1696.
In 1685 the Earl of Rochester, then Lord Treasurer bought Mr.
Cornwallis's interest in the house at the south end of the Tennis
Court and a yard of 62 feet by 20 feet whereon he has erected a
kitchen and other low buildings near the gateway going into King
Street and the Earl has passed a new lease thereof to his own use for
21 years from 1696 Lady day. The remainder of what was granted
to Cornwallis consists only of the Tennis Court and 4 small rooms
adjoining thereto with chambers over and a very narrow piece oi
old building wherein the widow of Sir Charles Scarborow lives: all
which may be valued at 70l. per an. The desired lease therefore
may be rated at a fine of 600l. notwithstanding part of the buildings

person with whom he had left the care thereof shipped the
neckcloths contrary to his orders and without notice: whereupon

afterwards legally imported into this kingdom, seems to be no

particular of the house called Fauxhall in the manor of Kennington
and parcel of the Duchy of Cornwall in order to a new lease thereof
to Robert Fowles goldsmith for 22½ years from 1702 Michaelmas
at the rent of 6l. 13s. 4d. and fine of 400l. |

Prefixing: Said Surveyor's report on said Fowle's petition for
same. Charles II granted the premises to Sir Samuel Moreland
1675 April 9 for 31 years at the above rent without fine, in
consideration of services. By mean conveyance the remainder
of this term vests in the petitioner. If the clause of re-assumption
in the old lease were omitted in the new one it might give encouragement to make improvements. The buildings now standing are
irregular, old and part of them very ruinous. In 1675 Sir Charles
Harbord and Mr. Hugh May made a particular survey and valued
them at 100l. per an. By view and enquiry on the place I find they
are now worth 119l. per an. Petitioner has lately been at great
expense 300l. in supporting the great wall against the river of Thames
and he must now build the stairs and bridge. I rate the renewal

paying to the said Earl, his executors and assigns 1,000l. a year for
the said term, with a clause of distress &c.; the said nominee to
permit the Crown to levy the overplus of the revenue of the estate
to the use of the Crown: which was accordingly done and the said
Earl did so re-demise to Sir Charles Porter (since deceased) and other
trustees for the Crown: but the said Earl has represented that the
said estate is so charged with debts to Protestant creditors that he
