my Lords for a grant to the Earl of Galway of Sir Patrick Trant's

warrant accordingly but finding a very considerable debt of 8,443l.
17s. 4d. in principal money owing to Lady Stapleton from the said
Trant, and that a decree is obtained for the same, they have at the
desire of the said Earl deferred sending the warrant for the King's
signature conceiving that the grant will be of little value if said
debt be charged thereon. Please acquaint the King therewith and
if it be his pleasure that other forfeited lands in Ireland be granted
to Lady Stapleton and the Earl's grant be wholly discharged of said
debt please signify same to my Lords by the first opportunity.

Surveyor of Greenwax with a salary of 250l. per an. appropriated

the said Booth in order to disturb petitioner upon pretence that
the sheriffs' debets fall short, doth claim the fines in the hands of
Sir Samuell Astry and hath respited all the fines in the said Astry's
hands, which do properly belong to petitioner: therefore praying
my Lords to order Booth to desist from his claim and to abide by

particular of coal mines as follows in Co. Durham in order to a lease
thereof to Michael Thompson for 31 years at 26s. 8d. rent and a
sixth part of the profits. |

Prefixing: said Surveyor's report on said Thompson's petition
ut supra Tr. Cal. XI, p. 417. Petitioner now explains his discovery to
be of the King's right to dig coals out of divers parcels of land in the
parishes of Whickham and Hamsterley Co. Durham which have been
heretofore leased out by the Crown. I find that James I 1623 April 28
granted to Alexander Stevenson, one of the Pages of his Bedchamber,
all that colliery in the common fields of Whickham within certain parcels
of land there distinguished by rigs merked out with dowles or stones
and called Brinkburne alias Kingslands, the superficies containing
110 acres; to hold for the lives of Robert, Francis and Thomas
Anderson at 26s. 8d. rent and without fine in consideration of services.
The last of the lives died about 12 years since. In 1632 Charles I
demised certain other coal mines in the parish of Hamsterley in the
manor of Softly, called King's Colliery in Lemton [Lemington] Hills to
Humphrey Wharton for 21 years at 20l. per an. without fine. The said
term is long since expired. The Parliament's Survey in 1649 valued
the colliery at Whickham at 130l. per an. and that in Hamsterley at
but 8l. per an. above the rent. No lease of the premises has been
obtained since the Restoration, and they have not been worked
there many years. I cannot state the present value if new wrought

Gosfright and Peter Whitcomb of London merchants shewing that
the ship St. Anthony laden with 'corants' at Venice for Amsterdam
was in her voyage disabled at sea by bad weather and being preserved
was towed into Fowey in a bad condition; that petitioners are
interested in 60 tons of corants part of the said lading and are
advised that their correspondent in Holland is dead and his widow
become insolvent and the corants are in a perishing condition:
therefore pray that same may be admitted to entry here as if
imported in a qualified ship. Ibid. |
