Footnotes

  • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual Italian description: ‘Eugenio IV. 1434. Anno 4. Lib. 52’. A flyleaf has the following contemporary notes: ’Primus de dignitatibus vacantibus et prebendis vacantibus ac plenaria remissione anno [iiiito, the leaf is injured at the top corner] Eugenii pape iiiiti ’ (a similar description occurring on the bottom edge of the volume), ‘Daniel’ and ‘Rubricatus per me Danielem Tries, clericum Barchinonen., in artibus et in utroque jure bacallarium, die x mensis Marcii Anno 1435.’
  • 2. On f. 301d is an indult, addressed ‘Carissimo in Christo filio Jacobo Regi Illustri,’ and dated at Florence, 1434, 7 Kal. Sept. anno 4, for the confessor of his choice to grant him plenary indulgence once in life and once only in the hour of death. The king James in question is evidently James II de Bourbon, comte de la Marche, husband of Joan II. queen of Naples (as above, p. 148 note), who died a Friar Minor in 1438.
  • 3. Not in the Monasticon list of abbesses, vol. v, p. 207.
  • 4. The rubric at the head of the four following indults is ‘de locis interdictis,’ but the incipit in each case is not ‘Devocionis etc.’ (see above, p. 43) but ‘Sincere etc,’
