EDITORIAL NOTE
The Present volume, the eleventh to be published of the Victoria History of the County of Sussex, deals with the south-western part of the rape of Arundel. The revival of the Sussex V.C.H. is described in the Editorial Note to Volume VI, Part I, published in 1980. The arrangement outlined there by which the West Sussex County Council and the University of London collaborate to produce the History of the county has remained unaltered, and the present volume is the fourth to be produced by that partnership. Again the University wishes to record its gratitude to the West Sussex County Council for its generosity.
Many people have given help with the compilation of the histories printed below, and they are all offered sincere thanks. For access to the many libraries, record offices, and collections, both public and private, whose resources have been exploited special acknowledgement is made to His Grace the Duke of Norfolk, K.G., G.C.V.O., C.B., C.B.E., M.C., his Archivist (Miss A. P. Taylor), and his Librarian and Assistant Librarian (Dr. J. M. Robinson and Mrs. Ian Rodger), to successive West Sussex County Archivists (Mrs. P. Gill and Mr. R. Childs) and their staff, to the East Sussex County Records Officer (Mr. C. R. Davey) and his staff, to successive West Sussex County Librarians (Mr. R. Huse and Mr. R. Kirk) and their staff, and to the librarians and staff of the libraries of the Chichester Institute of Higher Education and the Sussex Archaeological Society. Documents in the Goodwood estate archives were used by courtesy of the Directors of the Goodwood Estate Co. Ltd. and with acknowledgements to the West Sussex Record Office and the County Archivist. Those who provided material for illustrations and maps are named on pages viii and x; the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England took numerous photographs specially on request. Those whose assistance related to individual parishes are named in the appropriate footnotes; the West Sussex County Council Archaeological Officer (Mr. M. Taylor) and Mr. T. J. McCann of the West Sussex Record Office gave invaluable help on topics which recur throughout the volume. Mr. J. M. H. Bevan, Miss D. Howell-Thomas, Mrs. A. P. Hudson, Mrs. M. G. Maloney, the late Mr. G. Martin, and the Hon. Susan Spens gave voluntary help with a variety of research and editorial tasks during the compilation of the volume and are offered special thanks. Thanks are also due to all those who allowed access to buildings in their ownership or occupation.
A particular debt is owed to the Employment Service for financial and technical support provided since 1994.
The structure and aims of the Victoria History as a whole are described in the General Introduction, published in 1970, and its Supplement, published in 1990.
