John Thurloe (bap. 1616, d. 1668) was secretary of state between 1652 and 1658, during the Proectorate of Oliver Cromwell. This series contains papers relating to his period in office, but also to his earlier life.
The bulk of volume 1 is taken up with the years 1650-53. Also contains Birch's Life of Thurloe, and substantial appendices, including papers in the possession of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Contains extensive diplomatic correspondence and other papers for 1654, the first full year of Oliver Cromwell's protectorate, and the final stages of the first Anglo-Dutch war.
