Third Class Clerks 1816-55

This grade was created in 1816 when provision was made for fourteen Third Class Clerks. (fn. 1) In fact only thirteen were then appointed. (fn. 2) The number was reduced to twelve in 1821 when one of the clerkships was left vacant. (fn. 3) It was fixed at fifteen in 1832, (fn. 4) being increased to eighteen in 1837, (fn. 5) to nineteen in 1847, (fn. 6) to twenty-five in 1853 (fn. 7) and to twenty-eight in 1854. (fn. 8) In 1855 the grade was divided into First and Second Sections. (fn. 9)

In 1816 the salary scale attached to the grade was £150 rising by annual increments of £10 to £400. (fn. 10) In 1822 it was reduced to £100 rising by annual increments of £10 to £350. (fn. 11)
