164. Alice late the wife of Ralph de Bochardeby.
Writ (of certiorari), on the complaint of Robert de Kirkeby that the escheator had ejected him from land in Bochardeby, of which he had been in seisin for 3 years and more by the feoffment of the said Alice, 27 Oct. 4 Edw. I.
Cumberland. Inq. Wednesday after St. Gregory the Pope, 5 Edw. I.
Bochardeby. The said Robert was in peaceful seisin of 20a. land there by the enfeoffment of the said Alice, who held them in dower through the death of the said Ralph. And because he saw that such a feoffment was to the prejudice of the king and of the heirs, the escheator after the death of the said Alice, took the land into the king's hand. The said Alice paid 12½d. for cornage to the heirs for her third part, and the heirs paid 3s. 1½d. for the whole tenement to the king at the castle of Carlisle : the said Robert paid nothing to the king whilst he held the land.

Writ of certiorari, on the complaint of Isabel de Fortibus, countess of Albemarle, that the escheator had taken into the king's hand lands &c. held by the said Walter her tenant in Estraddon, asserting that the wardship ought to pertain to the king by reason of the barony of Valletorta, whereof Peter Corbet and Henry de la Pomeroy are heirs, and bound to answer to the king, 26 Jan. 4 Edw. I.
Devon. Inq. Wednesday after St. Gregory, 4 Edw. I.
Estraddon. Certain lands &c. (unspecified) held mediately of the said Isabel and immediately of Ralph son of Ranulph and his heirs, doing service of 1 knight's fee to the chief lords of the castle of Plimpton; and the said Walter held no land of the king in chief but of the barony of Valletorta. Peter Corbet and Henry de la Pomeray are not in the king's homage.
Hurberton. 40s. land of which Alexander de Okeston and Joan his wife were jointly enfeoffed by Roger de Valletorta; and 16s. land held by Hawis late the wife of Reginald de Valletorta the younger in dower.
Waysseburn. 4 marks land held by the heirs of William son of Durand of the gift of Reginald de Valletorta.
Brixham. A third part of the manor, of which the said Alexander and Joan were jointly enfeoffed by the said Roger.
Brideford. 10l. land with the advowson of the church, similarly held jointly.
Hurberton. 21s. rent of assize were held by the said Roger, which the king now has through his death. 33½ knights' fees pertain to the said barony of which the king now has seisin through the death of the said Roger and Alexander; whereof the aforesaid Joan was dowered of 11 fees through the death of Ralph de Valletorta her former husband, and the aforesaid Hawis of 6½ fees through the death of the aforesaid Reginald.
Hurberton. 3 ferlings land with the whole meadow land, worth 50s., held by Richard de Binelegh, sometime clerk of the said Roger, by his feoffment; 100s. land held by Isabel, late the wife of Warin de Boddeton, of the master of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, which land Roger de Vautort granted her.
Holne Abbatis. 40s. land held by the abbot of Buffestre of the gift of Ralph de Valletorta in frankalmoin.
Brixham. Two parts of the manor, worth 20l., held by Agnes Beauceyn for a term of years, which the said Ralph delivered to Stephen Beauceyn her husband and herself to farm.
Ho in the manor of Brixham. 6l. land held by Roger de Pridias, which the said Ralph gave to Geoffrey de Pridias his father.
Cliston. The manor, held by Guy de Nonant of the gift of the aforesaid Reginald.
Clauton. 10l. land similarly held by the same Guy ; 10l. land held by Walter de Bathon of the feoffment of the said Ralph ; 2 marks rent held by the prior of Frithelestok, with the homage and service of the said Guy of the whole manor, which rent he had of the gift of Richard de Brendesworth, and he of Alexander de Okeston, and he of the said Roger.
Cherleton. 20l. land held by Master Richard de Clifford of the gift of Thomas Pipard, which Reginald de Valletorta gave to Thomas Corbet and Isabel his sister in free marriage, and the said Thomas gave to William Pipard, father of the said Thomas Pipard, with Katherine his daughter in free marriage.
Brideford. 40s. land held by the abovesaid Hawis in dower.
The aforesaid fees with two dowers are worth 20s. yearly, saving wardships and relief when they happen.
Peter Corbet and Henry de la Pomeray are next heirs of the said barony, and of full age.
Clauton. 10l. land held by Walter de Bathon of Guy de Nonant, rendering 2 marks yearly.
Fernhull. 60s. land held by the same, of Joan late the wife of Ralph de Valletorta, who has it in dower, by service of ¼ knight's fee.
La More. 20s. land held by the same, of the heirs of Richard Beauceyn by service of ¼ knight's fee.
Suthcote. 30s. land held by the same, of William de Stoddon rendering 20s. yearly.
Shepwaysse. 5 marks land held by the same, a moiety of Thomas de Monte Sorelli rendering 1 mark yearly, and the other moiety of Matthew de Forneaus by service of ½ knight's fee.
Blaketoriton. A moiety of a mill held by the same, worth 1 mark yearly, rendering 3s. 6d. yearly to William la Zusche by the hand of Richard de Uppecote.
Bratton. 60s. land held by the same, of Joel de Buketon rendering 1d. yearly.
Cornwode. 4l. land with the advowson of the church, held by the same, of Reginald de Ferariis by service of 1d.
Estraddon. 10l. land held by the same, of Ralph son of Ranulph by service of 1 knight's fee.
Pauntesford. 50s. land held by the same, of Mauger son of Henry son of Henry by service of ¼ knight's fee.
Hineton. 6 marks rent of assize held by the same, of Joel de Buketon in free marriage with Isabel mother of the said Walter.

The manor with the hundred, which is of the king's ancient demesne, was held by the said countess, by the feoffment of Maurice son of Maurice and Emelina his wife daughter of the said countess, in exchange for certain lands of the said countess in Ireland. She held no lands &c. of the king in chief in the bailiwick.
Emelina, the wife of Maurice son of Maurice, and daughter of the said countess, aged 24 and more; and Alan, son of Roger la Zouche who had to wife Ela elder daughter of the said countess, aged 8, are her heirs.

A court with garden and messuage, 71a. land in demesne, a little meadow, pasture, and tenements held by William Persune, Henry Scorevell and Thomas West, held of John de Maundevyle in chief (who held of the king in chief), paying yearly 19s. to the court of Sutton which was of the said John, of which 2s. 6d. ought to be paid to John de Perham, and the said John de Maundevyle or whoever is chief lord of Sutton is bound to acquit the said tenement of all kinds of services for the said rent.

Swaluweclive. ½ hide land held by homage of John de Mandevile, pertaining to the manor of Sutton which was his, rendering 16s. 6d. yearly, and doing suit at the court of Sutton, and at the king's hundred (court) of Doneworth ; and 1 virgate land of the fee of Thomas Cosyn, held by homage of the said John rendering 2s. 6d., and to the sheriff of Wilts for sheriff's aid 5½d.
Roger Olivir when his father died was within age, and his next (friend) on his mother's side had his wardship, and not the ancestors of John de Mandevile : the said Roger and his ancestors have been accustomed to do the aforesaid services and no others since they were first enfeoffed of the said lands &c.

Writ of plenius certiorari to the justice of Chester, on the complaint of Peter de Arden that whereas the wardship of the said Richard's lands and heir pertained to him, the justice had taken them into the king's hand, by reason of the bailiwick which the said Richard held in the forest of Maclisfeld, 24 Feb. 4 Edw. I.
Chester. Inq. Thursday the day of St. Gregory the Pope, 4 Edw. I.
The wardship of the lands and heir of the said Richard ought to pertain to Sir Peter de Arderne, because the said Richard held of the said Peter in chief the manor of Gousewrdth for two parts of 1 knight's fee, doing to the said Sir Peter homage and service of one footman with hauberk at his castle of Aldeford in time of war.
Nordclif. The manor, held with a third of the whole fee of Pounhale of Edmund Phyton doing to him homage and 5s, 9d. yearly.
Maclisfeld forest. A forestry of one footman, worth ½ mark yearly, held of the king by doing homage for the said forestry.
A certain land beyond the Dee outside Chester, worth 4l. yearly in time of peace, held of Sir G. de Dutton, by homage and 1d. yearly or a pair of gloves.
Snelliston. The lordship, worth 10s. yearly, held of Henry de Alditheleg by the like service.

Writ of extent, partition, and assignment of dower, 22 March, 4 Edw. I.
Northampton. Extent (undated).
Watford. The manor (extent given) held of the king in chief by service of 1 knight's fee, with 5 virgates land, which he formerly conferred upon William le Brown and Aline his wife, John de Burneby and Sarah his wife, and William de Parles and Joan his wife, three of his heirs, by service of 6d. yearly, and which they delivered to him for his life.
Avelina, Sarah, Joan and Ellen his daughters, aged 30 and more, are his heirs.
Margery late his wife is fully dowered from the separate portions of the said heirs according to the tenor of the writ, who granted her their portions of the capital messuage for her life, saving to themselves the houses necessary for keeping their corn and beasts, and for receiving guests (hospitanda).
Partition briefly endorsed on the writ. The said Avelina is the eldest and a widow, Sarah married to John de Burneby, Joan married to William de Parles, and Ellen the youngest and a maiden (domicella).

Wilts. Inq. Friday the eve of St. Thomas the Apostle, 4 Edw. I.
Fitelton. 1 carucate land with a messuage (extent given), held of the king in chief rendering 6d. yearly to the king's bailiff at Clarendon.
She died without heir, and the jury know of no heir but the king.
