Treasury warrant to Henry Guy to cancel and deliver
up the bond for 1,000l. which was given 1688. Aug. 1,
to James II by Sir Tho. Griffith, kt., Tho. Hartopp,
Richard Holt and James Keeke of London, merchants,
the late intended Farmers of the Pre-emption
of Tin, conditioned for the payment of that sum
to the King when they should become possessed
of the tin at the then next ensuing coinage : all
by reason that the said farm is broke and the
Treasury Lords having agreed to the delivery up
of said bond on the said Farmers' accompting and
answering the whole Coinage Duty to and for
the year ended at Michaelmas, 1688 ; it appearing
from a certificate of the Deputy Auditor of the
Duchy of Cornwall that the same is answered to the
Receiver thereof, except 500l. which was paid to
the Earl of Bath by a direction with which the
Treasury Lords are satisfied. |

bound for Cadiz, to be permitted to sail under the
same condition as the other ships bound thither
except that of going with the convoy in case the
convoy be gone before she can reach them : it
appearing from the certificate of Samuel Tirrill.

ship was entered out Sept. 4 last, laden with rich
goods and her commander gave bond according to
the regulations of the Order in Council of Sept. 25
last, but she was left out of the list, presented to

March on the orders which you [Ranelagh] have
upon the new Customs. By the assignment to
Sir Joseph the interest is to take effect from the
date of such assignment and the intermediate
interest accruing before such date from the original
date of the orders is to be surcharged in your account
[as Paymaster of the Forces] for the King's benefit. |

Royal letter by the Queen to the Governor of Maryland.
We have been informed by your letter of
July 11 last of your receipt of our letter of 1689-90,
Feb. 1, and of your obedience thereto. Having since
heard what your Deputies and Agents have offered,
we have thought fit to take our Province of Maryland
under our immediate care and protection
and to appoint Lionel Copley, esq., to be Governor
thereof. Until his arrival you are to continue the
administration of the Government and to take
care that a moiety of the impost of 2s. per hogshead
of tobacco exported be collected for the use of
the Government there and to permit the other
moiety and the duty of 14d. per ton to be collected
and paid to Lord Baltimore as Proprietory of our
said Province.
We have been informed of the murder of our
late collector [John Paine] and have some time past
directed the Lieutenant Governor and Council of our
Colony and Dominion of Virginia to do all possible
to bring the offenders to speedy justice within
Maryland if the offence should appear committed
there and in that case to convey the offenders
thither to await trial. |

Lady day, 1687, and 19l. 18s. 0d. surcharged on
him for the two half years in which he did not
bring in his account, he not having collected after
1687, Lady day : it appearing on enquiry that he
and his father and sureties have fallen into decay
in their estates, and are not able to satisfy the
debt. |

Royal warrant, under the Queen's sign manual [to
the Lords Justices, Ireland], to pass a grant under
the great seal of Ireland to James Roche, mariner,
of all the Crown's title and interest by the attainder
as below [whether the same be in the whole or only
in part thereof as below] of and in the ferries [ferry]
of Kinsale, which by patent of 1679, Aug. 1 [supra,
Calendar of Treasury Books, Vol. VIII, pp. 1953-5],
was, with many other ferries, granted to the Duke
of Monmouth, whose title is conceived as forfeited
by his attainder, but that by deed dated 1683,
May 8. Joseph Myhell (having purchased from
the said Duke before said attainder) granted to
Anthony Stawell a third part thereof for ever and
similarly William Brooks by deed of 1683, July 2
[having similarly purchased], granted a sixth part
thereof to the said Stawell. The present grant is
in consideration that said Roche was sent by Major
General Kirke into Londonderry at the time of
the siege with notice of the intended relief and did
with great hazard of his life perform that considerable
service by swimming up the river into the
town and was forced to stay two nights in the
water and received three wounds from the enemy's
shot, whereby he is disabled in his body and prejudiced
in his health : and the Lords Justices having
by their letter of July 29 last reported on his petition
and advised as above concerning the Crown's title. |

and Hearthmoney [arrears] to discharge William
Brookes, late collector of Hearthmoney, of the
sums due from him on his accounts thereof, viz.
153l. 10s. 0d. on his accounts for the half year
ended at 1688. Michaelmas, and 76l. 16s. 6d. for
the succeeding half year ended 1689, Mar. 25.
and 3l. 14s. 0d. for money by him not discharged
in his collection books : it appearing that said
Brookes is very poor and has been so, as he
alleges, by reason of theft committed on him by
his servant maid his whole estate consisting of
a few household goods scarce worth a seizure,
his wife now with child and five children : and that
James Price, one of his sureties, who was formerly
a collector of Hearthmoney, is now fallen from a
good credit into decay ; and Edward Bedford, his
other security, late a vintner near the Savoy, is
likewise fallen to decay. |
