bought for the service in Ireland pursuant to your
contract : and likewise to forthwith send to Mr.
Langford the royal warrant for preparing your
contract [for the supply of bread for the Forces
in Ireland as follows], so that it may be entered.
Entry of said royal warrant, dated April 9 last,
to the Attorney or Solicitor General for a great seal
to contain an indenture between their Majesties
of the one part and Isaac Pereyra of the parish of
St. James's, Westminster, of the other part : witnessing
that in consideration of 20,000l. in money
paid him by the King and of 36,000l. more in several
orders registered on the Additional 12d. Aid, which
are agreed to be delivered him as follows, viz. two
for [in all] 12,000l. on the passing of this present
great seal, 6,000l. on June 10 next and 6,000l. on
the 10th of each succeeding month till said 36,000l.
be complete, he the said Pereyra agrees that he
will provide and deliver for the use of the Forces
in Ireland such a number of loaves of good bread
daily for six months from such day as the King
or the Commander in Chief hath or shall appoint,
not exceeding 36,000 loaves a day of 1½lbs. each
or 18,000 loaves of 3lbs. each, to be well made,
three fourths thereof wheat meal and one third
rye meal, with a mark thereon such as shall be
directed by the Commander in Chief : and will
deliver said loaves to the colonels or chief officers
of the Regiments of Horse, Foot, Dragoons and
Train of Artillery of said Army, or to such persons
as they shall depute, at the headquarters of each
Brigade or at the quarter of the said Train of Artillery :
provided always that in all cases where he is to
deliver bread the said Pereyra is to be furnished
with waggons or carriages sufficient for the carrying
and removing of the corn, meal, bread, biskett and
utensils relating to said service. He further agrees
that he will provide and keep a sufficient number
of commissaries to distribute the bread and take
receipts for same for the persons authorised to
receive : and that every month he will make up
an exact account or balance with such persons, so
that deductions for the said bread may be made
and stopped by the Paymaster General : provided,
that if it appear to the King or the Commander
in Chief that for want of fuel to bake bread or of time
to set up ovens or for any other sufficient reason,
the bread cannot be provided as above, then Pereyra
shall deliver 1lb. of good biskett instead of 1½lb.
of bread and so in proportion for greater quantity.
Further, Pereyra contracts to lay up in storehouses
and magazines as follows such quantities of wheat
and rye or wheat meal and rye meal as shall be
ordered by the King or Commander in Chief on
timely notice, and that he will not use any wheat
or rye therein but such as shall be by him exported
out of [bought in] England or Wales except such
as shall be received by him out of the King's stores
in Ireland or such as he shall be directed to receive
by royal sign manual : and will permit inspection
of his magazines and of his baking and weighing the
bread : and further will take off from the King all
such quantities of wheat, wheat meal and biskett
already provided by the King in England or Ireland
for the said Forces as the King shall think fit, at a
true appraisal and valuation thereof, for which
said Pereyra will pay in London out of the abovesaid
orders on the Additional Aid. The King hereby
declares that no Customs, subsidies or Excise shall
be demanded on the export of said wheat, rye or
meal from England or Wales into Ireland or on
the landing of same there. The King hereby
covenants that he will pay 1¼d. per lb. for bread so
as above delivered and for 1lb. of biskett as for
1½lb. of bread and if Pereyra provides and lays up
in magazines more provision of wheat, wheat meal,
rye or rye meal than shall be made into bread by
order during the six months of this contract, then
the King will allow him for the overplus : and
further will allow him equitably for all damage by
loss of bread by reason of counter marches and by
changing and removing of magazines, or by captures
and spoils by the enemy either by sea or land if
same do not happen by said Pereyra's default by
reason of not keeping within the orders of the
Army. And the King or Commander in Chief shall
give him sufficient and early notice of the places
where the magazines shall from time to time be
made and will give him all possible assistance in
erecting all magazines and ovens and shall appoint
houses, granaries and places fit for such magazines
and ovens provided the King be not obliged to be
at any charge for same, but in all extraordinary
occasions will equitably consider such charge.
And the King will appoint sufficient convoy for
the ships laden by Pereyra for this service and will
pay him in England all loss and damage by demurrage
or otherwise by the detaining of said ships
for want of such convoy or by order : but Pereyra
is to give a month's written notice to the Admiralty
when and where his ships will be ready and the
King shall not be obliged to appoint convoy more
than three times within said six months. If Pereyra's
ships sail without convoy, if without special leave
or command of the King, then Pereyra to be
responsible for any loss or damage thereto. Further,
the King will order the Regimental officers to

Prefixing : (a) proposal by A. B., shewing that the
Crown is seized in the forests of Bare [Bere] and
Waltham Chase in co. Southampton, containing
40,000 acres, with timber thereon to the value of
150,000l., and therefore proposing that same be
disafforested, for that now it is a charge to the
Crown of about 3,000l. per an., and there is but a
small number of small deer and no stags and not
a place fit for chace by reason of the underwood
"and witenesse of the soyle" and none of his
Majesty's predecessors seldom or ever hunted.
When improved the premises may be worth 20,000l.
per an. and may advance besides the rent 100,000l.
Therefore proposes that the premises be granted to
trustees to sell the timber and grant leases of the
land to those who shall undertake to improve and
clear the ground. The proposers will undertake to
produce buyers for the timber who will give full
value and will give security to produce farmers and
tenants to take the premises : and that 20,000l.
be raised out of the premises to the King before any
allowance to the proposers. Allowances by way
of severalty may be made to the persons that have
purlieus adjoining the forest and to the villages
having right of common there. The proposers
pray an allowance of a "third part of their discovery
and services in the premises by improvement."

Treasury warrant to the Clerk of the Pipe for a lease
to Thomas Edolph, gent., of two closes etc. by
him discovered to be a concealment in the parish of
Alkham, Kent, [and a wood] called Abbott Wood
and a tenement there with the appurtenances,
[all] part of the manor of Blackose (Blackhose) :
the lease to be for 60 years from Michaelmas last
at the old rent of 70s. per an. : the lessee to sue
and recover the mesne profits of the premises from
1660, rendering a third thereof to the King : the
consideration for the present lease being the charge
this lessee has been and must be at in discovering
and recovering the premises to the Crown.
Prefixing : (a) (b) particular and memorandum of the
premises. One of the closes is called Stombyltye,
the other lies in Stonden near the common road
formerly in the tenure of John Uden and afterwards
in that of Simon Edolph : also the wood called
Abbott Wood in the parish of Alkham and containing
four acres, in the like tenures of Uden and Simon
Edolph : also the tenement called Pulton in the
said parish of Alkham, formerly in the tenure of
— Barkers and afterwards in that of said
Simon Edolph, all parcel or late parcel of the manor
of Blackhose and formerly of the lands of the
Archbishop of Canterbury and now of the Crown
by virtue of an Act of Parliament and demised to
Simon Edolph by Q. Elizabeth 1595, June 5, at
the rents of 53s. 8d. for the closes and wood and
13s. 4d. for the tenement.
(c) Ratal, dated May 20 inst., by William Harbord,
Surveyor General of Crown Lands, of said particular.
Preceded by [what are usually separate steps and
entries in the Treasury records] (d) said Thomas
Edolph's petition for this lease, with the usual order
of reference thereon dated April 8 last : and (e) said
Surveyor General's report dated April 17 thereon :
and (f) the usual Treasury warrant, dated May 17,
for a particular of the premises with a view to the
present lease. The said Surveyor General's report
(e) states that the lease by Queen Elizabeth is not
enrolled in the office of the auditor concerned, nor
has any rent been paid out of the premises : but
the auditor certifies that the monastery of St.
Radigund, with a farm and several woods in the
parishes of Alkham, Poulton and River, beforetime
parcel of the lands of the Archbishop of Canterbury,
were granted to Simon Edolph in fee to hold by
knight's service without any reservation of rent ;
which grant bears date 1589-90, Jan. 31, and
passed the great seal. It appears from a search
in the Office of the Clerk of the Pipe and Augmentation
Office that Simon Edolph took a lease under the
Exchequer seal 1595, July 5, of a close in Alkham
and Abbotts Wood there at 56s. 8d. per an. rent
and of another close of land in Poulton for 21 years
at 13s. 4d. per an. rent, being parcel also of the
possessions of the Archbishop of Canterbury and
within the manor of Blackose. This term expired
in 1616, July 5, and no subsequent lease or grant
appears. From the particular of the said lease of
1595 it appears the premises were then considered
of little value ; no fine was paid and the acreage
and abuttals are not stated, so that it is hard now
to distinguish these lands from others granted in
fee as above in the same parish ; and therefore hard
to set any value thereon. Petitioner is said to be
the great grandson of the said first lessee.
