Treasury warrant to William Harbord, Surveyor
General of Crown Lands, for a particular of the
ten thousand acres of fen land called Peterborough
Level in cos. Lincoln, Northampton, Huntingdon
and Cambridge (of the piece of land in co. Lincoln
called the Ten Thousand Acres in Peterborough
Level) in order to a lease thereof to the Earl of
Torrington.
Prefixing : said Surveyor General's report, dated
Feb. 13 last, on said Earl's petition for a grant
of the King's title to said Ten Thousand Acres
and to the manor of Dauntsey, co. Wilts. Having
no particular of the premises, I had a search made
with Mr. Aldworth, before whom the premises are
in charge as parcel of the late Queen Mary's jointure,
and do find that the Ten Thousand Acres were
granted by Charles II, 1661, Dec. 14, to the Duke of
York in fee simple, there being a lease then in
being to Thomas, Lord Ossory, Charles, Lord
Muskerry, John, Lord Belasyse, and Sir George
Hamilton, kt., 1660-1, Mar. 13, for 31 years at
1,500l. per an. rent. In 1664, on surrender of this
term, the premises were granted to John, Lord
Belasyse, John, Lord Berkeley, Sir John Shaw,
William Ashburnham and Francis Underwood for
28 years at 323l. 8s. 9d. each for Lord Belasyse's
share, Lord Berkeley's, said Shaw's and said
Ashburnham's and 173l. 9s. 6d. for said Underwood's,
being in all 1,467l. 4s. 6d. By patent of
King James, 1685, Aug. 28, the premises were granted
to Laurence, Earl of Rochester, Henry, Earl of
Peterborough, Sidney, Lord Godolphin, Robert
Werden and Sir Edward Harbert in trust for the
late Queen Mary for her life as part of her jointure
and of the above lessees Lord Belasyse renewed
his lease 1688, Nov. 6, for 21 years for a fine of
1,462l. 8s. 8d. at the previous rent and Shaw renewed
his 1688, Nov. 13, for 17½ years for 1,233l. 12s. 4d.
fine at the previous rent : so that of the remaining
three leases only two years are to run. The improved
yearly value was computed by Sir Charles
Harbord in 1660, Dec., at double the abovesaid
total rental, being estimated at 6s. 8d. per acre.
At present I have not any better valuation than
3,000l. per an. The manor of Dauntsey in Wilts
came to the Crown on the attainder of Sir John
Danvers and was soon after granted by Charles II
to the Duke of York and in 1685 by James II
to the above trustees on the said trust. It contains
3,400 acres, many leaseholds and copyholds, royalties
of fishing etc., and the present rental is 1,096l.
per an. The improved value is computed at 2,689l.
per an. It is charged with an annuity of 140l. for
the life of Lady Ivy, who is about sixty years old
and with a rent of 8s. per an. to the manor of
Startley. |

Langhorne, senr., the Honble. Marvin Touchett
and others in trust for William Harcourt, alias
Harrison, who was at that time attainted and
afterwards executed : and thereupon two writs of
Levari facias were directed to the Sheriff of London
1681-2, Jan. 23, and 1685, Nov. 28, whereby the
rents of the premises were levied and paid into the
Exchequer Court. The interest in the premises
vests in the Crown by attainder and there appears
to have been no grant of them out of the Crown. |

Appending : (a) extract of a letter from Mr. Williamson,
dated York, the 16th inst. I shall have received
near 20,000l. upon the 2s. and Additional 12d. Aids
and cannot meet with [bills of exchange for] returns
for above 5,000l. of it, most of which I have paid to
the Dutch Forces in this country [county]. I have
writ several letters to the Agents to move the Treasury
Lords to know if it might not be an acceptable
service to pay the money at Chester to the Forces
marching that way or in the north, but am yet
without an answer : so that I am in a strait what
measures to take. If I must bring it to London
I hope convoy and carriages will be allowed or [that]
the King's waggons [may be] sent down here for it,
being two waggon load, and shall all be ready at
York the latter end of next week. |

But if you have no occasion for that money, give
Mr. Williamson notice thereof, so that he may

Appending : (a) extract of a letter, dated York,
April 16 inst., from Mr. Williamson. In the Treasury
letters of Mar. 15 and 20 ult., supra, pp. 542, 547,
I am directed to pay 2,000l. to Israell Feilding. I
advised him hereof, [sending the advice note] to
Scotland, and he directed me to have the money
ready by the 1st April at Carlisle, which would be
for their Majesties service. Accordingly I sent
the 2,000l. with two of my servants with a convoy
and horses, which, with the staying there, is a
considerable charge. I have no account that
Mr. Feilding has been there to take the money and
give me a receipt, though the time and place was
by his own appointment and very inconvenient
to me. |
