Lateran Regesta, Vol. CLXXVIII (fn. 1)

5 John XXIII (contd.)

De Prebendis (sic) Vacantibus

1415.
Id. Feb.
Constance.
(f. 34.)
To John Forest. Collation and provision of the archdeaconry of Surrey in Winchester, a non-major dignity, value not exceeding 240 marks, still void and reserved as below. The pope made provision to John, [now] bishop of Lichfield, then archdeacon of Surrey, of the see of St. Davids, and granted him indult to retain, even after his consecration or after the lapse of the canonical time for consecration, and until he should be translated to a fatter (pinguiorem) church, whatever benefices he then held [as above, p. 443], upon which translation he was to resign the said archdeaconry. Subsequently bishop John was translated from St. Davids to Lichfield, having previously resigned the archdeaconry, and king Henry, perhaps in ignorance of the pope's reservation, presented the above John Forest to bishop Henry, who, perhaps also in ignorance, instituted him, which presentation and institution are therefore null, the archdeaconry being still void by the said resignation. The present provision is made notwithstanding that Forest holds the canonry and prebend of Bannebury in Lincoln, and the wardenships, without cure, of the poor hospitals of St. Cross by Winchester and St. Nicholas, Portesmouth, in the diocese of Winchester, value not exceeding 110, 60 and 60 marks respectively. Vite ac morum.
Concurrent mandate to the bishops of Durham (Dublinen.) and Norwich, and Thomas Polton, archdeacon of Taunton in Wells. Vite etc.

De Prebendis Vacantibus

Ibid.
(f. 35d.)
To John Stone (or Stoue). Collation and provision of the canonry and prebend of Fountemelle in the church of the Benedictine monastery of Shaftesbury in the diocese of Salisbury (in which church there are, besides the abbess and convent, a number of secular canons with prebends), value not exceeding 48 marks, still void and reserved as below. The pope made provision to John as in the preceding, mutatis mutandis, as far as upon which translation he was to resign the said canonry and prebend. Subsequently bishop John was translated from St. Davids to Lichfield, having previously resigned the canonry and prebend, and abbess Cecily and the convent, in accordance with ancient custom and perhaps in ignorance of the pope's reservation, presented the above John Stone to bishop Robert, who, perhaps also in ignorance, instituted him, which presentation and institution are therefore null, the canonry and prebend being still void by the said resignation. Vite etc.
Concurrent mandate to the bishop of Durham and Norwich, and the archdeacon of Taunton in Wells. Vite etc.

De Provisionibus Prelatorum

1414.
4 Kal. June.
Bologna.
(f. 282d.)
Provision to Robert Mabire, a Friar Minor, priest, of the see of Raphanen. [a titular see in Syria], void by the death of bishop Anthony, during whose lifetime it was reserved to the pope. He is, as soon as he has had his letters expedited, to betake himself to the said church, and is not to exercise pontifical offices without the city and diocese. Pastoralis officii. (De mandato.) [Cf. Wadding, Annales Minorum, IX, p. 364, ‘Raplonen. sive Rapoten. in Hibernia, sub Archiep. Armacano, fratrem Robertum Mubire, per obitum Antonii, iv Kalendas Junii’. See below, Reg. CLXXXV, ff. 115d and 118.]
