Mandate to collate and assign to Thomas Harling, rector of Pulbergh in the diocese of Chichester, if found fit after examination, the canonry and prebend of Fytelworth in Chichester, value not exceeding 20 marks, void by the death of Thomas de Mere; notwithstanding that he holds his said church, value not exceeding 50 marks, and the free sinecure chapels of Schrowardyn and Wateresupton, value not exceeding 15 and 7½ marks, in the dioceses of Hereford and Lichfield. To Nicholas de Rissheton, canon of St. John's, Beverley, doctor of civil and canon law, papal chaplain. Provision motu proprio to him, who is also auditor of causes of the apostolic palace, of the said canonry and prebend, value not exceeding 100 marks, provision of which was made to him on their becoming void and reserved to the pope by the death of Richard Thorn, papal chaplain, notwithstanding which John Midilton, clerk, of the diocese of Durham, afterwards unlawfully intruded himself. At the instance of Nicholas the pope commissioned Bertrand, [now] bishop of Gubbio, then papal chaplain and auditor, to compel John to give up possession to Nicholas, and on his contumacy the bishop repeatedly excommunicated him, invoked the secular arm, deprived him of his benefices, and disabled him from holding others. Afterwards, upon its being set forth to the pope by Nicholas that John, with the help of certain powerful men of the realm, had compelled Nicholas, then in the realm, to renounce through fear the said canonry and prebend, got himself absolved and rehabilitated, forced Nicholas to bind himself by oath, and obtained provision, the pope commissioned Raynald, cardinal deacon of St. Vitus's in Macello to annul the renunciation, and on Raynald's absence from the Roman court, commissioned Henry, cardinal priest of St. Anastasia's. Cardinal Henry revoked the renunciation and oath, and the provision made to the said John, or to Robert Wulveden, or to any other, and restored to his former state Nicholas, who now doubts whether the provision made to him holds good. Mandate to collate and assign to John Smyth, rector of Kilmedy (followed by a short blank space), in the diocese of Ossory, if found fit after examination, the canonry and prebend of Blacrat in Ossory, value not exceeding 10 marks, which became void and reserved to the apostolic see through Gregory XI's promotion of Alexander [Petit de Balscot], [now] bishop of Meath to the see of Ossory, and his consecration during the lifetime of that pope, and which still remain void, both Gregory XI and Urban VI having died without disposing thereof; notwithstanding that Smyth holds the said church, value not exceeding 2 marks. Mandate to collate and assign to Walter Galle, priest, perpetual vicar of Beauver, in the diocese of Cork, the canonry and prebend of Kylbrogan in Cork, value not exceeding 10 marks, so long void by reason that John, clerk, of the said diocese, putative son (filius pretensus) of Robert de Barri, held it for several years without obtaining dispensation on account of illegitimacy, so that by the Lateran statutes they have lapsed to the apostolic see; notwithstanding that he holds the said vicarage, value not exceeding 12 marks, and that he intends to litigate in the apostolic palace about the canonry and prebend of Kilbecan in Limerick, of which he has been despoiled, value not exceeding 6 marks.
