To the bishop of Telese, the dean of Killaloe, and the precentor of Ardfert. Mandate to collate and assign to Thomas, subdeacon, of the diocese of Limerick, son of the late John de Geraldinis, knight, the chancellorship of Limerick, an elective non-major dignity with cure, value not exceeding 40 marks, which the pope lately ordered certain judges, not here named, to collate and assign to him on its voidance by John (called Alexander further on in this letter) Piliston's contracting marriage, although William Brys, priest, of the diocese of Meath, unlawfully detained it. Thomas, who is a scholar of canon law, doubts whether for certain reasons the provision made to him by the said judges a number of years ago holds good. Vite ac morum. (De mandato.) |

To Master John de Dulmen, papal chaplain and auditor. Mandate motu proprio to surrogate Master John Preue, rector of Wodchurche in the diocese of Canterbury, doctor of canon and civil law, papal chaplain and auditor, to the right which Richard elect of Bangor has this day ceased, as below, to possess in the archdeaconry of Meath, and to collate and assign to him the archdeaconry itself. A cause arose, as the pope has this day heard, about the archdeaconry on its voidance by the death of Walter Brugis, between the said Richard, then papal chaplain and auditor, who claimed it under a papal mandate of provision, and Thomas Bathe, canon of Dublin, who opposed the mandate and still prevents it from taking effect. The pope at Richard's instance committed the cause, notwithstanding that it had not lawfully devolved to the apostolic court, to the above Dulmen, and his right has, by the provision made to him this day of the see of Bangor and by his approaching consecration, become void.
The value of the archdeaconry together with that of the canonries and prebends of Howeth in Dublin and St. Margaret's in Lincoln, and the church of Patryngton, in the diocese of York, provision of all which, about to be void, the pope has this day ordered to be made to the said John, does not exceed 70 marks. Mandate motu proprio to collate and assign the church of Lemigton Hastang in the diocese of Lichfield, value not exceeding 80 marks, void by the death of William Donmow, to Thomas Derfelde, priest, of the diocese of York, who was presented to Richard, bishop of Lichfield by prior Robert and the convent of St. Oswald's, Nostell, was refused institution by that bishop, and has been instituted, upon his appeal, by William, archbishop of Canterbury. It is now asserted that such presentation and institution do not hold good. Vite ac morum. |

To the official of Norwich. Mandate, if after hearing the below mentioned appeal he find that neither of the parties has any right, to collate and assign to John Moore, clerk, of the diocese of Norwich, if found fit after the usual examination in Latin, the church of Ufford in the said diocese, value not exceeding 50 marks, to which, on its voidance by reason that Peter Porter had held it for a year and more without being ordained priest and without dispensation, he was presented to bishop Henry by Isabella, countess of Suffolk, and duly instituted. Peter has appealed to the pope, and John doubts whether such presentation and institution hold good. The mandate is to be carried out, notwithstanding that John holds the parish church of Thorndon and the free chapel of Sugenho without cure in the said diocese, the value of both not exceeding 70 marks, and has lately had dispensation from the pope to hold for life, together with the said parish church, one other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if an elective dignity with cure, major or principal respectively, personatus or office in a metropolitan, cathedral or collegiate church, or a parish church, and to exchange both as often as he pleased for two similar or dissimilar incompatible benefices. To the archdeacon of Gloucester. Mandate to collate and assign to Nicholas Hambury, priest, of the diocese of Worcester, if found fit after the usual examination in Latin, the church of Newynton, value not exceeding 30 marks, void as below. Nicholas formerly received successive papal dispensations, (i) as the son of an unmarried man and an unmarried woman to be promoted to all, even holy, orders, and hold a benefice even with cure, after which he was so promoted and obtained the church of Hasulton; (ii) to resign, for purpose of exchange or otherwise, Hasulton, and hold in its stead a similar or dissimilar benefice, after which he resigned Hasulton for the purpose of exchange and obtained Humelton; (iii) to resign, for purpose of exchange only, Humelton and hold in its stead a similar or dissimilar benefice, after which he freely resigned Humelton, and obtained, by collation of the ordinary, Newynton, all three in the said diocese. The pope has by other letters [Reg. LXXI, f. 270] rehabilitated him on account of the aforesaid; required him to resign Newynton and dispensed him, if after resigning, Newynton should be collated to him, to hold it and any other mutually compatible benefices, of any number and kind, with or without cure, even if canonries and prebends and dignities, major or principal respectively, personatus or offices, with or without cure and elective, in metropolitan, cathedral or collegiate churches. To Master Branda de Castellione, papal chaplain and auditor. Mandate to collate and assign to Richard Whadden, clerk, of the diocese of Lincoln, if in the course of the suit, lawfully introduced to the apostolic see and committed by the pope to the above auditor, between the said Richard and Robert Tyndale, priest, of the same diocese, it appear, as some assert, that neither has any right, the church of Ouyng in the said diocese, value not exceeding 20 marks. Richard had collation of the church from the late William, archbishop of Canterbury, to whom it had lapsed by the Lateran statutes, and after having had possession for some time has been despoiled by Robert. who now detains it. Confirmation of the institution of the perpetual vicarage of Galuy in the diocese of Tuam, the assignation to it of a portion and the collation made of it, as below. The petition of the parishioners to Urban VI set forth that the Cistercian abbot and convent of Knockmoy (Collis Victorie) in the same diocese had from of old and still detained the church as though appropriated to them, taking the fruits, and that no portion for a perpetual vicar had ever been assigned, but that they, although they had no right, appointed and removed at pleasure, now a secular priest, now a religious. Urban VI ordered the archbishop of Cashel and the bishop of Elphin, without mention of their names, to institute and assign, as above, and upon this being done to collate and assign the vicarage to John Lang, priest, of the diocese of Cashel. The petition of the said John to the present pope contained that Peter [arch] bishop of Cashel duly instituted a vicarage and assigned to it all the personal [and] fish and other small tithes, called ‘altar tithes,’ of the parish (omnes personales piscium et alias … minores decimas altaragia nuncupatas) and all the oblations, together with a manse adjoining the church, and made collation of the vicarage, the abbot and convent being removed, to the said John Lang, whose said petition added that he doubts whether these proceedings hold good.
