(f. 3.)		 To Thady Macgillacosgli, a canon of Armagh. Collation and provision by these presents, which the pope wills to hold good as if they had been granted under the date of 12 Kal. May, anno 1 (20 April, 1455), to him (who was lately, when provision was ordered by Nicholas V to be made to him of the perpetual vicarage of St. Fergus's, Inyscaeyn, in the diocese of Clogher, then about to become void, dispensed, notwithstanding his illegitimacy as the son of unmarried parents, to be promoted to all even holy orders [and receive and retain the said vicarage, and who] afterwards obtained possession of the said vicarage, void and canonically collated to him, and is still in possession) of a canonry of Armagh and another of Clogher, with reservation to the pope's gift, for collation to him, of a prebend of each and of a dignity etc. of one of them, even if elective and with cure, but not major, and (fn. 2) of a benefice with or without cure, value not exceeding 25 marks sterling if with cure or 18 if without, in the collation etc. of the archbishop of Armagh and the bishop of Clogher and the chapters etc. of those churches; with dispensation to receive and retain such canonries and prebends and dignity etc. and benefice, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases, notwithstanding the said defect etc. Vite etc.

(f. 34.) (fn. 3) 		To William Lyndesay, a canon of Aberdeen. Collation and provision to him (who is a licentiate in arts and was lately dispensed by papal authority, on account of illegitimacy as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all [even] holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, and afterwards to hold a second, and subsequently to hold any compatible benefices of any number and kind with and without cure, even if canonries and prebends, dignities etc., not being major or principal dignities) of a canonry of Aberdeen, with reservation to the pope's gift, for collation to him, of a prebend and a dignity etc. of that church, and (necnon) of a benefice with or without cure wont to be assigned to secular clerks in the collation etc. of the abbot and convent of Aberbroth, O.S.B., in the diocese of St. Andrews, even if it be a canonry and prebend, dignity, etc. in a collegiate church, provided that no one of such dignities be major in the church of Aberdeen or principal in a collegiate church, the value of such benefice not exceeding 25 marks sterling if it be with cure or be a dignity or a personatus, or 18 if not.   • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual modern description in Italian: ’Calisto iii. 1455. Anno 1. Lib. 1.’ A water-stained flyleaf has the contemporary description: ‘Secundus de prebendis et dignitatibus ac prebendis vacaturis anno primo (altered by a contemporary hand to ‘9to’ i.e. ‘quarto’) domini nostri domini Calisti pape iii.’ Above this description is the partly legible order ‘R(ecipe) Cri., P. de Varris’ (i.e. the name P. de Varris is again in full) and below it is ‘Rubricatus est.’ On the bottom edge is also the usual contemporary description: ‘Secundus de prebendis et dignitatibus et prebendis vacaturis anno primo domini nostri domini Calisti pape iii.’ F. i. is headed: ‘De prebendis et dignitatibus vacaturis anno primo.’ There are ff. i–cccviii. of text, of which several are blank.
  • 2. ‘aut,’ presumably an error for ‘necnon.’ as in the next following letter.
  • 3. On f. 169, under date 1455, 12 Kal. May (20 April) anno 1, is a collation etc. to Hugh Forster, M.A. and a proctor of causes in the Roman court, licentiate in canon and civil law, of a canonry with reservation of a prebend etc. of St. John's Novimonasterii (i.e. Neumünster) Würtzburg (Herbipolen.). See Reg. Lat. DXXI, note to f. 90, below, p. 308. Forster is a mediaeval German name.
