1445. 18 Kal. Jan. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 5d.)	To the bishop of Dunkeld, the abbot of Inchcolm (Insule Sancte [sic] Columbe) in the diocese of Dunkeld and the archdeacon of Hainaut in Liége. Mandate, at the recent petition of John Redhuche, priest, of the diocese of Dunblane, M.A. (containing that after Martin V's reservation to himself and his successors of absolution from all sentences against simoniacs, he bargained with Michael de Burn, then perpetual vicar of Eithe (sic) in the diocese of St. Andrews, that if Michael would resign in his favour he should continue to receive all the fruits etc. as long as he lived; that James, bishop of St. Andrews, ignorant thereof, made collation and provision of the vicarage, as void by Michael's resignation, to the said John, who under pretext thereof obtained possession and still detains it, thereby incurring the said sentences) to absolve John from the said sentences, enjoining penance, dispense him on account of irregularity, and rehabilitate him. Dispensation (at the petition of Henry the Sixth, king of England, who has in the university (fn. 2) of Cambridge erected a royal college of the most glorious Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas for a provost and seventy scholars wishing to study in the lawful faculties) for the said provost and scholars, present and future, holding parish churches or any other benefices with or without cure requiring holy orders, not to be obliged for seven years from the time when they begin the said study (provided that within the first year, if the law require it, they be ordained subdeacon) to be ordained deacon or priest on account of the said benefices; with grant and indult to those of the said provost and scholars who, because they are priests or hold dignities, personatus or parish churches, are forbidden by the canons to study or teach civil law (leges) or physic or medicine, to do so nevertheless for seven years, and to dispute therein, exercise all scholastic acts and take the degrees of bachelor and licentiate therein and receive the insignia of doctor of civil law and master of physic or medicine. Mandate, the pope having been informed by Malachy Oconer, a canon of the Augustinian monastery of Abbeygormacan (Via nova) in the diocese of Clonfert, that Donald Onyellayn, abbot of the Augustinian monastery of St. Mary de Petra, Kilmacduagh, has committed simony, dilapidated many goods of the said monastery and is accused of divers other crimes, if Malachy, who is a priest, and has made a private profession (ordinem ipsum tacite professus existit), and who was lately dispensed by papal authority as the son of a priest, a canon professed of the same order, and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, will accuse Donald before the above official etc., as usual, to summon Donald etc., and if he find the above to be true, to remove him, and in that event to make provision of the said monastery, value not exceeding 8l. sterling, to Malachy, and to grant that he may be blessed by any catholic bishop. The pope hereby specially dispenses him on account of the said defect etc.; without prejudice to the bishop of Kilmacduagh, to whom St. Mary's is by ordinary right subject. Apostolice solicitudinis. Mandate (the pope having been informed by Donald Onary, a canon of the Augustinian monastery of St. John the Evangelist, Tuam, that Thomas Otharpa, abbot thereof, is a notorious fornicator, and has dilapidated the goods thereof), if Donald (who lately, after entering the said order, had himself promoted to all, even holy orders notwithstanding his illegitimacy as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman) will accuse Thomas before the above dean as usual etc., to summon Thomas etc., and if he find the above to be true, to deprive Thomas, and in that event to make provision of the said monastery, value not exceeding 20 marks sterling, to Donald. The dean is to cause Donald to be blessed by any catholic bishop, who shall thereafter receive from him the usual oath of fealty according to the form enclosed, and send it (destinare procuret), by Donald's letters patent, sealed with Donald's seal, to the pope; without prejudice to the archbishop of Tuam, to whom the monastery is by ordinary right subject.
