To Thomas, lord of Clyfford, nobleman, knight, of the diocese of York, and Joan his wife, noblewoman. Indult to have a portable altar on which [they may have] in fit places [mass and other divine offices celebrated], and, when their business requires it, [mass celebrated] before daybreak. Registered more fully than usual:—`Sincere etc. Datum ...' (B.and Cincius. | B. xx. Valven.)

Footnotes

  • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual modern Italian description 'Eugenio IV. 1441. Anno 11. Lib. 150.' A flyleaf has (i) the contemporary description ' Primus de prouisionibus prelatorum, de prebendis, de prebendis et dignitatibus, ac dignitatibus vacantibus, tabellionatus officio et plenaria remissione Anno xio domini nostri Eugenii pape 4 '(a like contemporary description, hardly legible, occurs as usual on the bottom edge of the volume), and (ii) the name 'Niuella,' to which a different contemporary hand (doubtless that of 'Niuella' himself) has added 'rubricauit.'
  • 2. For another instance of the choice of a judge-executor who might be liable to partiality, see above, p. 219.
The performance by a dean of such a pontifical function as the blessing of an abbot is unusual.
  • 6. His dispensation by papal authority for this is not mentioned.
  • 7. Eubel, Hierarchia. II, p. 87, correctly following vol. 66 of the Obligationes, f. 55d., which mentions Lindsay's illegitimacy.
  • 8. Ibid, I, p. 63.
  • 9. Eubel, op. cit, II, p. 146, following vol. 66 of the Obligationes, f. 57, has ob. Thomae. Joannes O'Heyne O.Min. minister prov. Hiberniae, lic. in theol. 1441 Oct. 25. In a footnote he mentions the earlier provision made to him on July 18, 1438, then a bacc. form. in theol. on the voidance of the see by the translation of Thomas to Tuam, who, however, did not consent to be translated [see Cal. Lett. VIII, p. 267]. Oblig. 66, f. 42d, has in fact 'de persona domini Johannis Heyne, ordinis fratrum minorum professoris, in theologia bacca[la]rii formati,' whilst f. 57d. has 'de persona fratris Johannis ministri provincie Hybernie ordinis minorum in theologia licentiati.' In representing Obl. 66, f. 57 as giving the surname of the bishop elect as 'O' Heyne,' Eubel is in error, the present bull of provision showing that it was 'White.'
  • 10. Cf. the note of the provision in Oblig. vol. 66, f. 56d. under the above date (referred to by Eubel, op. cit. II, p. 238) 'de persona fratris Johannis, ordinis minorum, concedendo eidem quod possit exercere pontificalia duntaxat in ciuitate et dioc. Eboracen.' The name of his predecessor is not there mentioned. See above, pp. 180, 184.
  • 11. Oblig. 66. f. 57d. (referred to by Eubel, op. cit. II, p. 282), under the same date as above, adds 'dispensando super defectu natalium etc.'
  • 12. Oblig. vol. 66, f. 57d. (referred to by Eubel. op. cit. II, p. 264) has, under the same date as above (wrongly rendered by Eubel as 'Oct. 1'), 'de persona Johannis Hectoris, presbyteri Sodoren. dioc.' vacan. per obitum domini Angusci (read by Eubel 'Augusti') extra curiam defuncti.'
  • 13. Obligationes, vol. 66, f. 57d. (referred to by Eubel, op. cit., II., p. 183), which has the same date as above, omits Robert's surname: 'de persona fratris Roberli ordinis fratrum heremitarum sancti Augustini vacante per renunciacionem domini Johannis .....'
  • 14. Without the usual letters to the archbishop of Tuam and the king of England. Eubel, op. cit. II, p. 162, refers to Oblig. vol. 66, fol. 55 (rectius 56) which has, under the same date as above: de persona domini Dionisii decani eiusdem ecclesie et ad ipsam per aliquos ex canonicis postulati vacan. per obitum quondam Johannis .... Dispensando secum super defectu natalium de soluto et soluta in iiiito gradu consanguinitatis coniunctis genitus (sic).
  • 15. Not clearly written.
  • 16. On f. 292, an indult is granted 'Magistro Petro de Monte, notario nostro,' the papal collector.
  • 17. The text has 'Londonien. dioc.,' but the word 'dioc.' is cancelled and overwritten A[ntoniu]s.
  • 18. No Christian name.
  • 19. Cf. above, f. 264.
  • 20. Cf. ff. 306d., 307. 308d.
  • 21. A cross in the margin draws attention to the 'primo' in the date of the year. Cf. above, f. 301d.
  • 22. preceptori domus de S. ordinis sancti Johannis Jer[osoli]mitan. militi.
  • 23. Cf. ff. 301d. 307.
  • 24. Cf. ff. 301d. 306d.
  • 25. Cf. ff. 301d. f. 306d, 308d.
  • 26. Cf. ff. 301d, 306d, 307.
  • 27. This entry is immediately preceded by a like indult addressed 'dilecto filio nobili viro Willermo Nicolai domicello et dilecte in Christo filie Juliane eius uxori Oxomen, dioc.' It is in the same writing as the above and several following entries, and has the same date and the same marginal and terminal subscriptions viz: B. and Carolus. B. Gratis ubique Valven. It seems therefore possible that 'Oxomen.' (Osma in Spain) may, as frequently happens in the Register, be an error for 'Exonien.' (Exeter.)
  • 28. domino loci de Eteland Lichefelden. dioc., salutem etc. Cf. below f. 315.
  • 29. In the date 'Maii' is cancelled and overwritten A[ntoniu]s, and 'Aprilis' is substituted in the margin by An[tonius de Adria.]
  • 30. dominii de Hetland Rothomagen dioc. domino temporali, salutem etc. Cf above, f. 313.
  • 31. The date 'Id. Aprilis Anno Undecimo' is cancelled and over written A[ntoniu]s and after it is written, in his own hand, 'Terciodecimo Kal. Maii Anno Undecimo.
  • 32. 'Conuentren. et Lichefelden. dioc.' is inserted in the margin by An.
  • 33. The usual name in the margin is omitted.
