The scrutators named are the said Simon, William de Trikingham, subprior, and William de Morton. The election was opposed by Thomas Wake, lord of Lidel, knight, on the ground that he was patron of the said monastery. Appeal was made to the pope by Simon, and the cause was heard by the bishop of Albano; Sir Thomas Wake and his proctor, Andrew Sapiti, were condemned for contumacy.

Edmund left a son by Elizabeth; and the marriage, for which a dispensation is asked, has been arranged in order to put an end to the enmities between the two families.

Mandate to cite William de Northwell before the pope, to make answer touching the petition of John de Denton, to whom reservation had been made by John XXII. of a canonry and prebend of Southwell. The said canonry and prebend of Northwell [in Southwell], becoming void by the death of Elias de Couton, were given to John. But John de Thoresby, asserting a right to them, took possession, and holds them, and appealed to the pope against the provision of them made to John. The papal auditors appointed by John XXII. adjudged the canonry and prebend to John, sequestrating the fruits of the same; whereupon William de Northwell, by force of arms, violated the sequestration, and seizing the fruits, incurred sentence of excommunication, and, moreover, caused himself to be intruded into the canonry and prebend. On the sentences of excommunication, suspension, and interdict being pronounced, John de Risle, sub-delegate, and Thomas de Lisington, proctor for John de Denton, on taking possession of the said canonry and prebend, were hindered by William, who caused William Johannis Costardi, public notary, and the two clerks sent by John de Denton, to be imprisoned, taking from them the letters of the official of York, who was one of the sub-delegates, and other letters, and forced John de Risle and John de Melton, sub-delegates, to swear that they would not carry out the papal mandate on behalf of John de Denton, whom he threatened to seize and imprison if he were caught in England, so that John was obliged to leave his native country.
