August 1708, 16–20
Aug. 16. | [Draft] Instructions offered to Treasurer Godolphin by Sir James Mountague, Solicitor General, to be observed by Capt. Henry Baker in order to put a stop to the treacherous practices now used on the coast of Sussex in holding correspondence with her Majesty's enemies. You shall inform the Justices who live near the sea coast there that her Majesty has lately received information of an intercourse & correspondence between French ships & some people on the said coast of Sussex, which practices during the present war with France are highly criminal & very dangerous to her Majesty. The Justices are to enquire strictly of the constables & petty constables of the several Districts in the Divisions contiguous to the coast; & read to them the Act of Treason of 25 Edw. III c. 2, & the Act of 3 Anne [3–4 Anne c. 12 for prohibiting all trade and commerce with France]. The Deputy Lieutenants are to appoint faithful persons to watch & guard the coast, & to prevent the landing of any persons from any French vessels making towards the said coast. “And if the country people run down in numbers not to annoy the enemy but to have traffic & correspondence with them, inquiry ought to be made & all persons dealing or discoursing with such enemies ought to be arrested & all witnesses ought to be bound over to appear at the next assizes & copies of all informations are to be sent to the Secretaries of State.” Warrants not Relating to Money XX, pp. 262–3. | |
