Treasury warrant to John How. Paymaster General of Guards and Garrisons, to pay 150l. to Lieut. Francis Fox for his trouble, fatigue, hazard and suffering, in the service of the Crown upon the reduction of Port Royal in America now called Annapolis.
Prefixing: undated report by [General] Francis Nicholson on the memorial of said Lieut. Francis Fox. He was an Officer under my command at the taking of Port Royal where he behaved himself in all respects like a good officer. As for his being taken by the French and Indians and being carried to Quebec with Capt. Pidgeon I have been fully informed thereof by the said Pidgeon, as likewise of the barbarious usage they met with in their long travels through the wilderness and I think they had very good fortune in not being roasted or at least scalped by them. the unhappy circumstances of his family I believe to be true and he being the only Officer there that hath not as yet been so happy [as] to partake of his Majesty's gracious bounty upon account of that unfortunate accident of being taken by the French and Indians I think it reasonable as a sufficient reward for his service and sufferings that he have 150l. sterling. He being an Officer at present belonging to Placentia his Majesty's bounty to these Officers will be a great encouragement to them and all others in his service in those parts.
