Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Receipt for allowing interest, at the rate of 5 per cent., on 20 orders for 500l. each registered on the eighth 4s. Aid [the Land Tax anno 1705] in the name of Sir Thomas Littleton as Treasurer of the Navy, and by him assigned to the Bank of England. Order Book VII, p. 219.
Same by same to Thomas Newton, Woodward of Whittlewood and Salcey Forests co. Northants, to fell timber for stakewood for the several coppices called Shrubbs Coppice in John Winn's Walk in Salcey Forest ; King's Coppice in Wakefield Walk, Old Ashwell's Coppice in same Walk ; and Old Linshire Coppice in Shoulbrook Walk in Whittlewood Forest ; in order to felling said coppices this season for the service of the Queen Dowager : they being of the full age of 21 years' growth. Prefixing : (a) order of the Queen in Council dated St. James's Feb. 12 for the Queen's ship Pembroke to be added to the list of those which share in the Vigo booty : on the petition of Sir Thomas Hardy, shewing that on the 10th Oct. (the day before the Fleet entered Vigo Harbour) she was directed to join the Kent and indeavour to intercept some Victuallers coming from France which the Mary had chased under Cape Finisterre and that when he arrived on the 12th at Vigo he found her Majesty's ships actually engaged with the enemy and might have gone in and had share of the action had there been occasion for all the ships of the Fleet to be engaged therein and [if] the wind would have permitted him : on which petition Sir George Rooke, who then commanded the Fleet, reported that if it should appear that the Pembroke was within the Isles of Bayonne at the beginning of the action or that she was as far up as any of the great ships before the action was over he sees no objection to adding her to the list ; and it appearing by the affidavit of some of her Officers that she was actually within the aforesaid Isles of Bayonne when the action was [begun]. Same by same to the Queen's Remembrancer for a commission under the Exchequer seal to empower Mr. Stanhope et al. to take the Earl of Rochford's oath to his accounts as Master of the Robes to Wm. Ill [under the name of William Henry Nassau de Zulestein], the said Earl being indisposed in Holland and unable to swear to same before one of the Barons of the Exchequer in the usual form. Letter of direction for 51,861l. 13s. 6d. to Charles Fox, Paymaster General of the Forces Abroad, for the 40,000 men anno 1705 : out of loans on Land Tax anno 1705 : and is for subsistence of the Subject Troops and full pay of the Foreign Troops composing said 40,000 men and as in part of 61,604l. 5s. 5¼d. for 31 days from March 24 inst. to April 23 next. William Lowndes to Sir Thomas Littleton, Navy Treasurer, to take up 100,000l. at 5 per cent. interest on the 300,000l. tallies on the Land Tax anno 1705 put into your hands. On your sending to the Treasury the orders for said sum the Lord Treasurer will endorse thereon his warrant for allowing such interest. Ibid.
Same to the Navy Commissioners to assign the abovesaid 100,000l. to the head of Wages and to take care that the 37,757l. 18s. 8d. for 6 weeks' bounty money ordered by the Queen to the Officers, seamen and marines who were in the late engagement in the Mediterranean be satisfied out of the money supplied or to be supplied for Wages. Same to Mr. Fox to insert in his next [weekly] memorial [for money for the Forces abroad] a demand for the sum requisite for the clearing Col. Stringer's Regiment from 29 Feb. 1703-4 to April 24 according to the numbers on the Irish Establishment ; according to the report [missing] from the Comptrollers of Army accounts on Col. Treasury reference to Sir Edward Northey of the petition of Rebecca Newcomen concerning the prosecution against her for loading wool between 1 July 1701 and 3 May last and praying discharge of the forfeiture of 184l. 16s. 0d. against her. Reference Book VIII, p. 142.
Same to the Prizes Commissioners of the petition of William Burnaby, Subcommissioner of Prizes at Hull, praying to be appointed a Commissioner for prizes on board the Fleet which is appointed for the West Indies, to prevent embezzlements at sea and also to inspect the accounts of the prize Agents in those places "which are very dark". Same to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of John Lilly, master of the pink Francis of Yarmouth, shewing that in January 1703-4 he laded at Newcastle 30 chaldron of coals Newcastle measure being a winter voyage, but by direction of the Customs officers there he took out a cocquet for 32 chaldron, "a summer voyage," intending to land same at Yarmouth but was forced by a westerly wind to Holland where he sold the coals and on return to Newcastle offered to the officers the overseas Duty to discharge his bond but they refuse : therefore praying an order to them to receive the [said] Duty in order to the cancelling his said bond. Same to Mr. St. John and the Comptrollers of Arany Accounts of the petition of Capt. Gardner on behalf of the Earl of Donegal's Regiment, shewing that a Company of said Regiment and 26 recruits were taken prisoner and carried into Cadiz and lost accoutrements to the value of 55l. 19s. 8d. (viz. 90 slings, 90 belts, 90 pouches, 90 flasks, 90 snapsacks, 16 kettles, and 4 Serjeants' swords) besides all the Officers' baggage and subsistence [therefore praying allowance thereof]. Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Queen's Remembrancer for stay of process against Viscountess Falkland on her late husband's accounts as Treasurer of the Navy, the ledgers for 7 several years thereof to 1686 Dec. 31 being signed and passed by the Navy Commissioners and the voluntary charge for 1687 has lately been brought in and the credit part of the ledger for 1688 has been signed and the voluntary charges thereof promised to be brought in. Same by same to same for the like stay against John Evelyn Esq. on account of the debit of 244l. 4s. 7d. at the foot of his account of Sick and Wounded between 1671-2 March 20 and 1675 June 20 [he craving allowance thereof] by reason that there is a considerable debt owing to him from the Crown. March 3. Treasury reference to Sir Christopher Wren of the petition of Charles Bertie, Treasurer of the Ordnance, shewing that one half of his Office in the Tower is proposed to be taken from him to keep the Records of the Tower in : and that same will make his Office useless as the office room he has hitherto had is barely sufficient for his business. March 3 &27. Subscription by Treasurer Godolphin for the execution of a Lord Chamberlain's warrant dated 1703 April 6 to the Master of the Great Wardrobe for the provision of a suit of clothes, 1 hat and band, 2 Holland shirts, 2 cravats, 2 pair of cuffs, 2 handkerchiefs, 2 pair of stockings, 2 pair of shoes and 2 pair of gloves for Henry Silvester, one of the children of the Chapel whose voice is changed : to an estimate of 9l.

March 5. Royal sign manual for 65,000l. to Charles Fox, Paymaster General of the Forces Abroad, as royal bounty to the Land Forces and Artillery Train engaged in the actions in Germany in 1704. Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Customs Commissioners to permit the 3 transport ships taken up by the Commissioners for Exchange of Prisoners to sail to bring the soldiers of Lieut. Gen. Stanhope's Regiments from Bordeaux : to wit the Orange, Mathew Lowth master ; the Mordecai, John Tekner master and the William and Thomas, John Long master : they having been stopped by the searchers at Gravesend on account of the embargo.

March 6. Treasury reference to Samuel Atkinson, Nicholas Roop and Thomas Coleby [Commissioners of Transports] of the petition of Sir Jos. Woolfe et al. owners of the Joseph and Thomas now in the transport service : shewing that the said ship in her passage from Gibraltar to Lisbon met a Spanish privateer of 22 guns and 160 men which she engaged 7 hours and at last got safe into Lisbon : therefore praying an allowance for damage sustained in regard the ship was saved by the courage and bravery of the mariners and the Queen hath thereby saved 3000l. "which by a covenant in the charter-party, she was liable to answer." Reference Book VI, p. 143.
Same to the Stamps Commissioners of the petition of John Butler, Henry Collet and Benjamin Collet shewing that John Collet was admitted into the Stamp Office soon after the erecting it and was very serviceable in putting the accounts of the Office into a proper method ; that he was afterwards distributor of Stamps for co. Worcester and is now disturbed in his brain and a deficiency in his accounts : therefore praying an allowance for his services towards sinking his debt. Ibid., p. 147.

Treasury reference to the Salt Commissioners of the petition of Capt. Edmd. Clarke shewing that he bought a French prize at Newfoundland with the cargo of 15,000 fish and sold the fish but there remained some damaged salt shaken off the fish about 10 tons for which the Salt officers demand 6d. a bushel but it is sold for but 4s. 2d. : "that the salt being only to the fish as cask is to wine to preserve it he conceives it not chargeable with any Duty" : therefore praying relief. Same to the Victualling Commissioners of the petition of Woodes Rogers shewing that he let Capt. Moody have a parcel of bread for the garrison of St. Johns in Newfoundland this last year to the value of 50l. 11s. 9d. for which he received bills on the Victualling Commissioners which they accepted but refuse payment : therefore prays that he may not be a sufferer by his zeal, this being a service done when there was no other English ship there. Treasury reference to the [Principal] Officers of the Works of the petition of Matthew Roberts shewing that 181l. 1s. 8½d. was due to him for pipes delivered to the Storehouse [of the Works] at Whitehall a little before the death of Wm. III and which have since been used to carry the water from Combe to Hampton Court Palace ; and 119l. 3s. 7½d. for the like pipe furnished there [in the gardens at Kensington] before the death of Wm. III and since used there by her present Majesty : therefore praying payment thereof ; as also for 75l. 12s. 0d. for 1703 April 1 to 1704 Dec. 31 for a man to turn the several brass cocks at Hampton Court and to cleanse the several basons in the gardens there from scum, which if not taken away constantly would stop the pipes and overflow the gardens. Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Queen's Remembrancer to deliver up John Taylor's bond for 1000l. as security for Richard Taylor, late Paymaster of the Million Lottery Tickets, who is indebted in a great sum to the Queen : the said John having paid 1000l. into the Exchequer the 5th inst. March 10. Royal warrant dated St. James's to the Attorney or Solicitor general for a great seal to appoint John Roos gent to be one of the chief engravers of her Majesty's Seals ("of our signets, seals, stamps and arms the engraving of the irons and dies of our Mint and medals only excepted") loco Henry Harris lately deceased : with the salary of 50l. per an. as from Dec. 25 last. Same to same for a same to appoint John Croker to be First Graver in the Mint loco said Harris with a salary of 200l. per an. ; as from Aug. 3 last : and Samuell Bull who is now a probationer and Gabriell Le Clerc who is found to be a good artist to be assistant to said Croker with salaries of 80l. per an. each as from Aug. 3 last (the day on which Harris died) for said Bull and from Xmas last for Le Clerc.
