Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Customs Commissioners
to employ Maurice Birchfeild in Ireland to correspond with the
several ports of that kingdom as by the Act 22 and 23 Car. II c. 26 (18)
and to transmit informations of any vessels trading from the said
ports to and from the Plantations contrary to law, with such instructions
as were formerly given to Charles Horn, and Fabian Steel and
Nicholas Culliford : the said correspondence having been found
very useful in detecting many ships engaged in such irregular trade.
He is further to keep an account of the quantity of tobacco and
East India goods which shall be actually landed in Ireland having
certificate cocquets to entitle them to great drawbacks from England
to wit as additional to the accounts hitherto kept there ; by the said
Birchfeild of lead, tin and coals landed there, to which has been since
added that of salt, the keeping of which accounts has been of good

William Lowndes to the Revenue Commissioners in Ireland. The
Lord Treasurer conceives it to be for the advantage of the revenue
both in England and Ireland to have regular accounts transmitted
to the Customs Commissioners, England, of the quantities of tobacco
and of such East India goods as are entitled to debentures, which
being shipped from hence to Ireland shall be actually landed there
and of any irregular voyages to or from the Plantations. He has
therefore constituted Maurice Birchfeild ut supra. He will have
his residence in London. Please instruct the officers in the several
ports of Ireland to correspond with him.
Also please appoint some person on your part to collect and to
transmit to you an account of the quantities of such goods so shipped
and of any others which you shall think it convenient to be informed

Robert Williamson, Henry Flower and James Whitaker as weighers
at Newcastle instead of the three weighers there who are not qualified
for that business : at 20l. per an. each instead of the present
allowances.
John Griffees as land carriageman in Newcastle port, it appearing
by a late survey of that port that considerable quantities of goods
are brought weekly to that port by land carriage from the Borders
of Scotland, Carlisle, Whitehaven and many other places besides
many that stop short by the way, and that trade being under no
proper inspection and regulation gives great and frequent opportunities
for the practice of frauds : to prevent which the said Griffees
is to keep a horse and to ride out into the neighbouring parts and
observe the carriage of wool on the bishopric side of Tyne. Towards
his salary 20l. per an. is to be stopped from that of Richard Leak, a
coal waiter there, who is old and infirm and not capable of much
business.

inserted therein and they are to have deputations as other officers viz.
