consider of a method for said work (see supra p. 228). You are to
observe the following directions therein :
(1) as soon as the drawers, shelves and presses are provided the
said records are to be cleaned from dust and put thereon and
diligently perused and examined and such of the said records as are
only wrote on one side and are of value (and not writs of Court at
the Common Law) to be put into books upon paper to be provided
for that purpose in such manner as (I am informed) divers ancient
deeds are done in the Cottonian Library with paste prepared with
colloquintida to secure them from worms :
and because it is conceived to be a labour of too great difficulty
to range those instruments according to the exact series of time or
their respective subjects you are therefore to cause the records of
each King's reign to be glued on the said paper indiscriminately as
they are cleansed and then to be bound in so many books as you
shall think fit and indexes to be carefully made to the said books of
the various subject matters under distinct and methodical titles
according to the succession of time, referring to the number of the
original Instruments :
that you cause like indexes or Kalendars to be made as well to the
429 Foreign Rolls whereof (I am informed) there are no abstracts
at all in your office as to those which shall hereafter be reduced into
order and to all other Records remaining there :
that such bookbinder shall be employed as you approve of to glue
and bind up the said Records in books as often as a sufficient quantity
shall be prepared for him, in such form and method as you shall
direct ; and that you do agree with such bookbinder for pasting and
binding the said books and for providing of paper, paste and all
other materials to be used therein at as cheap rates as may be and
to represent the same to me for my approbation :
to the end you may be provided with clerks qualified for this
undertaking I have appointed George Holmes (who is recommended
to me by the said referees) to be chief clerk attending you at a salary
of 100l. per an. : and you are hereby empowered to employ three
other clerks as you shall think fit at [in all] 150l. per an. to be apportioned
among them according to their merit.
You are to deliver to me quarterly an account of the progress made
from time to time in this affair.

for granting and ascertaining to Sir James Jefferys so much as his

said allowances but that the revenue shall not be charged with a
double payment thereof. If the said Jefferys shall survive the said
term of seven years the said allowances shall not determine but shall
