Warrants not Relating to Money XVIII., pp. 284-290. Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to John Parkhurst to allow in account to Peter Jennings, Agent for Prizes in America from 19 Nov. 1696 to January 1697-8, the charges expended by him in that service in registering his commission amounting to 67l. 5s. 0d. and 3 per cent. on his receipts which amounted but to 181l. 2s. 0d. But as to the 100l. craved by him for his voyage, pains and agency you certify that it was never the custom of the Commissioners of Prizes to give allowances to any agents in foreign parts by way of yearly salary but only a quantum meruit for the service they performed, which was usually 2½ per cent. on the money they received for prizes : but in regard the petitioner was at great trouble in putting matters into a method, settling correspondences and acquainting himself with the ways and ports of the country and had no sooner so done than he was superseded and thereby deprived of the advantage he might have expected therefore he may be allowed his charges in the service and also 3 per cent. or something more than the common recompence.
