Treasury warrant to the Postmasters General to remit 100l. to Richard Pilkington, late Deputy Postmaster of Ipswich, on his paying the 207l. 3s. 8d. balance remaining of his debt to the King see supra Tr. Cal. XIV, p. 401: the Postmasters General thinking it not reasonable to make him an allowance for the gentlemen of the County not paying for their letters as it may encourage a neglect of duty they not being obliged to deliver letters without being paid for them, but think petitioner is poor and deserving of consideration he having made as few Returns as any Postmaster considering the many letters he had to deliver and the extent of the Branch under his management. William Lowndes to Mr. Clarke. On breaking up the Marquess of Carmarthen's and Sir Cloudesley Shovell's Marine Regiments the King established the Reformed Officers thereof on an allowance of half-pay as from 1698 Aug. 19 and payable to the Navy Treasurer. But they are since placed on the Half Pay Establishment payable by the Earl of Ranelagh as from March 25 last.
As no payment has been made by the Navy Treasurer pursuant to the first Establishment, my Lords have directed money to said Earl to cover said interim period viz. 1698 Aug. 19 to March 25 last. Please prepare a royal warrant to authorise this. Out Letters (General) XVI, p. 154.
Treasury reference to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of George Curteis shewing that he bought some foreign silks of one Thomas Rowe which was afterwards seized by an officer of the Lustring Company upon which one Blower entered an information against petitioner and at the trial Rowe and Blower appeared against petitioner and he was fined 500l.: therefore praying a remission of the King's share of said fine. Treasury reference to the Warden &c. of the Mint of the petition of Jonathan Ambrose, melter to the Mint in the Tower shewing that he performed his agreement of melting and coining the several ingots and scissels of silver proceeding from the old money into small bars and making up the sweep of each fond by itself at three farthings per pound Troy, the King bearing the loss of the waste: that the said waste does not exceed 4d. per pound weight Troy according to the agreement with petitioner: but auditor Bridges who is now making up petitioner's account of the said waste refuses to allow same without a Treasury warrant for the King's bearing the loss: therefore praying such a warrant for the auditor.
