Footnotes

  • 1. Might equally well be "Cnudycote."
  • 2. An open space opposite the Banquetting House at Whitehall. It covered part of the present parade ground in St. James' Park (vide London Past and Present).
  • 3. i.e. in the Church.
  • 4. "On the left hand from Charing Cross.... [is] a large plot of ground inclosed with brick, and is called Scotland" (Stow), kept in memory by Scotland yard.
  • 5. vide n., p. 113.
  • 6. vide n. 3, p. 114.
  • 7. In 1547, Injunctions (for which see Wriothesley's Chronicle, Camden Society) were issued for the furtherance of the Reformation; inter alia was a clause:—"They shall take away, utterly extinct and destroy all shrines, coverings of shrines, all tables, candlesticks, trindles, or rolls of wax, pictures, paintings or all other monuments of feigned miracles, pilgrimages, idolatry or superstition: so that there remain no memory of the same in walls, glass windows, or elsewhere within their churches or houses." The only ceremonial lights allowed to remain were two candles on the table before the Sacrament. This is sufficient explanation of numerous items in the following pages, as well as of this present sale of wax, rendered useless by the Protector's commands.
  • 8. Probably candlesticks and lamps, and perhaps monumental brasses.
  • 9. The 'tables' were probably the stone altar slabs, or perhaps pictures, vide n. 3, p. 158, and cf. Machyn's Diary, p. 399.
  • 10. June 13th, This day was peace proclaimed with France. There was a solemn service at St. Paul's Cathedral and a procession through London. No doubt similar ceremonies were performed at Westminster (p. 163, Wriothesley's Chronicle, Camd: Soc: 1875).
  • 11. This total should be £4. 13s. 6½d. By subtracting the items marked * the second total is found.
  • 12. These appear to have been objected to by the auditors.
  • 13. Of the font perhaps.
  • 14. qy. apparells.
  • 15. The "sacrament" refers to the vessel in which the elements were reserved; here doubtless a pyx suspended from the roof or canopy above the altar.
  • 16. Died Friday, 28th Jan., 1546–7; carried to Windsor on Feb. 14th; Edward VI was crowned on Feb. 20th.
  • 17. The second total is found by omitting the items marked *. These were disallowed by the auditors.
  • 18. Originally written £13. 9s. 3d., which was arrived at by including the incorrect totals on pp. 122–3.
  • 19. Objected to by the auditors.
  • 20. An aumbry—a cupboard generally in the wall on the north side of the chancel. The altar plate and vessels and the bread and wine, etc., would be kept in it.
  • 21. Hinges.
  • 22. The archdeacon's visitation.
  • 23. By the injunctions of 1547 every Church was to have an English Bible set up which all who would might read.
  • 24. Queenhithe.
  • 25. For the examination of church goods.
  • 26. According to the injunctions of 1547 for the removal of superstitions (vide n. 1, p. 121).
  • 27. The "tabernacle" or temporary resting place of the reserved sacrament, vide note, p. 27. This item seems to refer to a tabernacle of the second or fourth description.
  • 28. Disallowed by the auditors. The total at the bottom of the page has been amended.
  • 29. The original has been altered by the auditors.
  • 30. Originally written "xlviijs ijd."
  • 31. vide pp. 57, 150.
  • 32. vide p. 153.
  • 33. Objected to by the auditors.
