Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs
Commissioners to observe an order of the King
in Council as follows.
Prefixing : Said order in Council dated 1676, Nov. 24.
Upon reading this day at the Board the petition
of John Ariens van Ham, James Barston, Daniel
Parker, John Campion, Richard Newnham and
divers others using the manual occupation or trade
of potters in and about London and suburbs thereof,
shewing that notwithstanding the statute of
3 Ed. IV, prohibiting the bringing in of painted
wares into England as merchandise for sale, and
the King's edicts for preventing such importation,
yet several persons, both subjects and foreigners,
daily import several great quantities of painted
earthen wares privately into London port and
publicly into the outports, where there is little
or no care taken to prevent it, to the inevitable
ruin of petitioners and of many hundreds of poor
men, women and children, whose subsistence
depends thereon, and the total destruction of the
manufactures here which [manufacture] is fully
as well done as any foreign and with most materials
of English growth, and therefore praying that such
importation may be prevented and the said
manufacture in this kingdom upheld : it was ordered
by the King in Council that Treasurer Danby
direct the Customs Commissioners [to give directions
to the officers of London port] and the officers
in the outports to cause the king's moiety of all
such painted earthen ware as well white as blue
or any other colour hereafter imported contrary
to said statute to be forthwith broken and destroyed.

50 quarters of rye yearly until further order : the
said collector keeping an account of the quantity
so imported : all by reason that application has been
made to Treasurer Danby on behalf of the town
and garrison of Berwick for renewing the privilege
which has been allowed them of importing certain
quantities of Scotch corn. Customs free, the matter
having been recently heard before Treasurer Danby
when they alleged their necessity of being supplied
with such corn.

Governor in Chief of Barbados, Sta. Lucia, etc.,
in America. By a judgment of the Admiralty
Court in England in July, 1675, it appears that the
ship Maria was made prize near Cape Lopus [Lopez]
by the King's ship Phoenix (lately commanded
by Capt. Watson and after his death by Capt. How)
and carried into Barbados. The effects of said prize
were 136 negroes and a certain quantity of dust
gold. Said negroes and most of said gold were
delivered to you, but you have rendered no account
thereof. You are to state such accompt with all
expedition, and to pay all the effects from the above
to John Strode ; to the end a just apportionment
and distribution thereof may be made to the
captain, officers and seamen of the Phoenix, pursuant
to our royal proclamation and according to the
petition exhibited to us the King by William Crusoe,
Roger Meryck, Nicholas Gerrard, Jeoffrey Baldock,
Hen. Howard, John Morgan, Benjamine Aldridge
and Samuell Davis in behalf of themselves and all
other officers and seamen of said ship.

Report to the King from Treasurer Danby on the
petition of Robert Fitz-Gerald and Adam Loftus.
I have considered same and the Lord Lieutenant
of Ireland's report thereon, and finding that your
Majesty, notwithstanding said report, is inclined
to gratify petitioners, I have nothing to object.
Prefixing : Note of said petition from Fitz-Gerald
and Loftus for a grant to the longer liver of these
of a pension of 300l. per an. [on the establishment]
in Ireland formerly granted to Visct. Ranelagh
for life [in reversion] after the decease of Ellen,
Countess of Tyrconnel who still enjoys the pension,
the said Visct. Ranelagh being willing to surrender
[his revisionary right thereto]. Said petition
was referred June 6 last by Secretary Williamson
to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, who reported
June 29 last that such a grant being for two lives
will lessen the King's favour to Mr. Carre, Sir James
Cuffe and Col. Cary Dillon, who have grants of
pensions as soon as any pensions on the establishment
fall void. Said report was referred Aug. 6 last to me
Treasurer Danby, and on the 10th Nov. last again
referred by Secretary Williamson to me Treasurer
Danby in these words "his Majesty having been
further moved upon this report, and continuing notwithstanding
graciously disposed to gratify the
petitioners in their suit" refers it to Treasurer
Danby.

Report to the King from Treasurer Danby on the
petition of Sir Edward Greaves as by the order
of reference of Feb. 22 last thereon. Petitioner
prays a grant of the inheritance of the iron mills
in the forest of St. Leonard, co. Sussex, with the
forges, furnaces, iron mine and liberty of taking
Horsham stone, 250 load of coal and 30 cord of
wood yearly for the use and maintenance of said
iron mills, which are now in lease to petitioner,
for which grant of the inheritance he offers to
relinquish his pretensions as well to 10,000l.
claimed to be due to him from the late King and so
much of 1,200l. due to him for arrears of his pension
as Physician in Ordinary to your Majesty and of
2,000l. due to him out of arrears of the pension
of the late Earl of Norwich as your Majesty shall
think fit. I find by the Surveyor General's report
that a lease of 250 loads of coal and 30 cords of wood
annually was granted him 1662, June 27, together
with said ironworks, viz., for 31 years from the
then following Michaelmas at 36l. 13s. 4d. per an.
The said proportion of coal and wood is not to
be augmented nor like[ly] to be improved in the
yearly value thereof (which does not exceed 260l.)
unless the importation of foreign iron should
be inhibited by law or so imposed upon [taxed]
that the ironworks of this kingdom may be
encouraged and improved. The ironworks are
decayed and disused and of no present profit to
petitioner. Therefore the Surveyor General rates
the inheritance as above at 2,373l. 6s. 8d., being at
eight years' purchase. As to said debts there is due
to him 1,100l. for 11 years to 1674, Michaelmas,
on his fee of 100l. per an. as a Physician to your
Majesty and 200l. for two years more since. From
the will of George, late Earl of Norwich (remaining
in the register of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury)
it appears that said Earl appointed the payment
of 2,000l. to one Mr. Calfe for Thomas Nevett,
goldsmith, and therein prays the King to pay
the 5 years' arrears of his pension to meet some
particular payments, of which this to Nevett is one.
Petitioner's right to said 2,000l. arises from his
marriage to said Nevett's daughter, as her marriage
portion, who was relect and sole executrix of said
Calfe, who was executor to said Nevett. "And
he further makes out by a patent under the great
seal of England constituting him a baronet of
England, that he was Physician General to the Army
of your Majesty's royal father of blessed memory,
by reason whereof he affirms that there remains
due to him the sum of 10,000l. for moneys lent
and otherwise [furnished for said King] but how
the same becomes due to petitioner hath not
appeared before me. I submit the matter to your
Majesty's wisdom.

employed in the King's buildings at Windsor
Castle ; and as the charge of returning [the loss by
exchange on] the said money to England will be
considerable, it is hereby also appointed that the
remainder of the sum of 2,218l. 17s. 5d. as follows
be applied to meet such charges, so that said
20,000l. may be entirely received in England without
abatement or defalcation : the said sum of
2,218l. 17s. 5d. arising as follows, viz., by the royal
sign manual of 1674-5, Feb. 10, it was ordered that
for the ease of the office of sheriff in Ireland, no
such sheriff after Dec. 25 then next ensuing should
during the time of the Assizes for any county keep
any table for entertainment of persons resorting
to such Assizes other than for his family and retinue,
nor should make any present to any Judge of Assize
for his provision, nor bear any part of such Judge's
charges, nor give any gratuity to such Judge's
officers or servants, and that no Barons or officers
of the Exchequer, their deputies, clerks or servants
should on any pretence whatever demand any fee
or present whatsoever of any sheriff for or upon
the passing his account : and in consideration hereof
said [sign manual] did further declare that the King
did resolve in the new establishment for Ireland
to commence from said Dec. 25 to increase the
Judges' allowances to 100l. each for each circuit,
and that the salaries of persons to whom fees were
then payable by any sheriffs upon passing their
accounts should be by so much increased as the
fees due from all the sheriffs of Ireland according
to the late reducement did amount to : but the
King having thought fit that the said establishment
should commence only from March last, and the
Judges of Assize having in obedience to the above
gone the last Lent circuit on their own charges,
and the officers of the Exchequer being suddenly
to pass the sheriffs' accounts for last year without
fees, and so will lose a half year's payment of that
allowance, therefore the King is hereby pleased
to make up the said defect ; "and therefore upon
examination of the present state of the charge of
that our kingdom [Ireland] for this year beginning
the 25th of Dec., 1675 and ending the 25th of Dec.,
1676, we finding that if all the payments were
computed according to the rate of our establishment
for the whole year there will be saved the sum of
2,218l. 17s. 5d., yet undisposed of" therefore it
is hereby ordered that out of the said saving there
be paid 500l. to and among the Judges of Assize
for the last Lent circuit (viz., 100l. each) and
194l. 3s. 1d. to the officers of the Exchequer
concerned in passing said sheriffs' accounts.

walk ; and of all those two places called Langley

"plaines" by estimation 190 acres of commonable
ground ; and of all the game of deer there, with
such free chase and free warren as the Crown has
in and upon the said walk : to hold as of the manor
of East Greenwich in free socage : with other
clauses for granting him a free chase and free warren
upon and within said walk and the circuit and bounds
thereof, and for deafforesting the said walk : and
with non obstantes that it is in or was within the
royal forest of Rockingham or any other royal
forest : all by reason that the coppices within the
said walk and the ground and soil thereof were
by patent of 1627-8, Feb. 26, granted to Edward,
Lord Montagu, deceased, and his heirs under the
fee farm rent of 10l. [per an.], which rent is [now
by the sale of fee farm rents of the Crown] granted
away. From the Surveyor General's report [on
Edward, Lord Montagu's petition for same] it
appears that the premises contain only said 13 acres
of enclosed ground lying in severalty, and said
190 acres of commonable ground wherein the Crown
has only right of soil and feeding of deer, open and
subject to the feeding of the commoners' cattle
of divers adjacent towns, and that no prejudice
is like to arise to any part of Rockingham Forest
