Hasted, master, and the Barnaby, Nathen Rider,
master, of the magazine of provisions which the
Navy Commissioners will soon be ready to ship for
the use of his Majesty's forces intended for Virginia
in the said ships : and also eight months' provisions
which said Commissioners will have occasion to
ship for his Majesty's ship Phoenix at Jamaica
on board the St. Thomas, Capt. Joseph Knapman

concerning the above shipment of provisions to
Virginia on board said merchant ships. Least
any dispute should arise in the clearing of the
said ships at Gravesend about the payment of
head money for the soldiers, you are to give
direction that the masters of said ships be not

Charles Bertie to the Customs Commissioners. In
pursuance of the order of Council of Sept. 30 last,
an embargo was laid upon some ships at Bristol
bound for Virginia. On the 28th inst. [ult.] the
mayor of Bristol has advised [the Privy Council] that
having stopped three ships entered out for Virginia,
one of them has changed her entry for the Barbados,
and so he believes the rest will do, to free themselves
from the embargo. Hereon the King has directed
that you write immediately to direct said mayor
to stop said ship or ships for two or three days,
by which time he shall receive the King's further
directions.

setting forth that by an Act of 20 Cor. II (in regard
that it was found by experience that since the
prohibition of exportation of leather the price thereof
was much abated to the great discouragement
of the breed and feeding of cattle and fall of
rents) leather was permitted to be transported
until the first Session of Parliament after 1675 :
which having been found very beneficial, a bill
passed the Commons the last sessions of Parliament
for continuing the said Act, but same was not
made an act by reason of the prorogation, so that
in strictness of law no leather can be transported
but calf-skins not exceeding 36 lb. the doz., or
4 lb. each skin, to the great detriment of the nation
in that particular : further that petitioner's
50 doz. of calf-skins did somewhat exceed 36 lb.

Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Surveyor
General of Crown Lands for a particular and ratal
of the manor of Kennington, in Lambeth, co. Surrey,
parcel of the Duchy of Cornwall, with a view to an
extension of lease thereof to Sir Robt. Cleyton
and John Morrice, viz., to 31 years, the present rent
of 50l. being on their petition reduced to the old
rent of 16l. 10s. 9d.
Prefixing : Said Surveyor General's report on the
petition of said Cleyton and Morrice for same.
The premises comprise the capital messuage of the
said manor, an old great barn, several cottages
and about 86 acres of meadow and pasture, parcel
of the demesne lands of said manor, granted by the
present King to Henry, Earl of Drogheda, by indenture
of 1661, May 22, for 31 years from 1660, Sept. 29,
at the yearly rent of 50l., which grant was assigned
to petitioners on the 27th of the same May for a
valuable consideration : and they have obtained
a second lease thereof under the Exchequer seal
dated 1671, June 8, for 10 years from 1691, Sept. 29,
under the same rent and paid a fine of two years'
value for it. The premises, together with the
residue of the demesnes of said manor called
Prince's Meadows and wharfes (now in lease to
John Arundell, Esq.) were formerly in grant to
Lord Cottington at an entire rent of 16l. 10s. 9d.
per an., which grant expired in the time of the
troubles : and there has been lately a new lease
passed to Mr. Arundell of those [Prince's] Meadows
and wharfes under the said rent of 16l. 10s. 9d.,
"which by the former leases taken by him since
his Majesty's restauration there was about 160l.
per an. more reserved now taken off." If petitioners'
rent of 50l. be reduced to 16l. 10s. 9d., there will
remain 33l. 9s. 3d. per an. for them to buy off for
25 years in the present, which I take to be of a year's
less value at least than three lives in copy holds
with widows' estates incident, which are now
constantly set at 10 years' purchase : and so the
33l. 9s. 3d. at nine years' purchase comes to
301l. 3s. 3d. When the last lease was passed
to petitioners the full improved yearly value was
then found to be 194l., out of which deducting
16l. 10s. 9d. for the rent, there will remain
177l. 9s. 3d. per an. The extension of lease they
desire is for six years. This is not worth a year's
purchase. Therefore a fine of 150l. may be a full
consideration in respect of the great repairs incident
to the premises to which they are tied by covenant,
they asserting that the great barn and some of the
tenements or cottages which have cost them very
dear to keep up, are no way useful or beneficial
to them or the estate.
