PRAYERS.
Tobacco, &c. to prevent Abuses in, Bill.
Whereas this Day was appointed, for the House to be in a Committee upon the Bill, intituled, "An Act to prevent the Mischiefs by manufacturing Leaves, or other Things, to resemble Tobacco; and the Abuses in making and mixing of Snuff;" and to hear Counsel for the Traders and Dealers in Snuff, in relation to a Clause in the said Bill, touching the colouring of Snuff:
The House being moved, "That another Day may be appointed, for their Lordships to be in a Committee on the said Bill, in regard the said Traders have several Witnesses to produce in their Behalf, who are now absent:"
It is Ordered, by the Lords Spiritual and Temporal in Parliament assembled, that this House shall be put into a Committee, to consider of the said Bill, on Thursday next; and that the said Traders may be then heard, before the said Committee, by their Counsel, if they think fit.
Vestries, Bill:
Hodie 1a vice lecta est Billa, intituled, "An Act for the better regulating Select Vestries, within the Cities of London and Westminster, and Borough of Southwark and Bills of Mortality; and for preventing any Misapplication of Monies raised or given for the Maintenance of the Poor."
Inhabitants of Southwark, Petition in Favour of the Bill.
A Petition of many of the chief Parishioners and Inhabitants within the several Parishes of St. Saviours, St. Olaves, St. George, and St. Thomas, within the Borough of Southwark, &c. was presented to the House and read; praying, "In regard they conceive that the said Bill will much conduce to the Peace and good Neighbourhood of each Parish, and the quieting Divisions and Animosities among them, and prevent for the future the Misapplications and Abuses thereby provided against, that the same may have the Concurrence of this House."
Ordered, That the said Bill be read a Second Time on Friday next; and the Lords to be summoned; and that the Judges do then attend the Service of this House.
Porteous versus Fordice:
After hearing Counsel, upon the Petition and Appeal of Andrew Porteous, in Deboig; complaining of an Interlocutor of the Lord Kimmergham, Ordinary in the Cause, in the Court of Session in Scotland, of the 22d of July 1715; and also of an Interlocutor of the Lords of Session, of the 29th of the said Month, affirming the aforementioned Interlocutor; and likewise of another Interlocutor of the said Lords, of the 30th of the same Month, whereby the said Lords refused the Desire of the Appellant's Petition, and adhered to their former Interlocutor made in the Behalf of Thomas Fordyce and Janet Scot his Wife; and praying, "That the same may be reversed:" As also upon the Answer of the said Thomas Fordyce and his Wife put in to the said Appeal; and due Consideration of what was offered thereupon:
Judgement affirmed, with Costs.
It is Ordered and Adjudged, by the Lords Spiritual and Temporal in Parliament assembled, That the said Petition and Appeal be, and is hereby, dismissed this House; and that the several Interlocutors therein complained of be, and are hereby, affirmed: And it is further Ordered, That the said Appellant do pay, or cause to be paid, to the said Respondents, the Sum of Forty Pounds, for their Costs in this House.
Adjourn.
