PREBEND

For the early history of the 3 Withington prebs., Church Withington, Ewithington and Withington Parva, see lists 10 and 15 above. The preb. held by Nicholas de Geneville was omitted from the main entries in pope Nicholas IV's taxation of c. 1291 but was mentioned in the running head as having temps. assessed at £3 10s (Taxatio p. 169a). The preb. occ. as parva Wythyntone in the 1294 prebendal taxation list in bp. Swinfield's register (Reg. Swinfield p. 305), where it was assessed at 60s. Valor III 10 assessed this preb. at 60s 4½d.

Nicholas the penitentiary II

Vacated a preb. (unspecified) by 25 Aug. 1285 when bp. Swinfield coll. M. John de Swinfield to it. This may well have been Withington Parva (see next entry; and see also list 14).

M. John de Swinfield

Coll. to an unnamed preb. previously held by Nicholas the penitentiary 25 Aug. 1285 (Reg. Swinfield p. 525). Had vacated the preb. of Withington Parva by 28 Jan. 1287 when Nicholas de Geneville was coll. to it (ibid. p. 526). John was coll. 29 Jan. 1287 to the preb. of Vowchurch, i.e. Putson Major (ibid. p. 526; list 31; and see also lists 3, 4, 7). Also rector of Hampton Bishop (Herefs.) (see Reg. Swinfield pp. 137, 524-6; Bodl. Library Record VI 160).

Nicholas de Geneville (fn. 1)

Aged only 10 according to bp. Swinfield 25 Feb. 1283, when he explained to Edward I why he could not give Nicholas a preb. or a benefice (Reg. Swinfield p. 1); coll. 28 Jan. 1287 to preb. of Withington Parva, at the request of Edward I (ibid. p. 526, and see also pp. 150-1, 153); can. of Salisbury by 18 Oct. 1294 (1 Fasti IV 125); occ. as resident can., preb, unspecified, 29 Sept. 1295 (Capes, Charters p. 168); occ. as preb. of Ewithenton 14 Apr. 1297 (Cal. Chanc. Rolls 1277-1326 p. 29); res. from an unspecified Hereford preb. by 16 Apr. 1301, when Amadeus fitzPeter de Marnay was coll. as his successor (Reg. Swinfield p. 533; 2 Fasti II 51). Prob. identifiable with the Nicholas de Genevill presented to the rectory of Trim, dioc. of Meath, by Edward I 11 Apr. 1283 (CPR 1281-92 p. 61), and receiving royal gr. of preb. in St Patrick's, Dublin, 22 March 1295 (ibid. 1292- 1301 p. 132).
