PREBEND
Sherborne founded as cath. priory 998 (AS Chs. Sherborne nos. 11-12), and seems to have stayed in similar relationship to bp. for some time after transfer of see to Salisbury (Old Sarum) after 1075 (above, pp. xxi, 1). Church of Sherborne gr. to cans. of Salisbury by bp. Osmund 1091 (carta). During the period before c. 1122, parish church of Sherborne formed a preb., said in 1146 × 55 to have been established by bp. Osmund (1078-99)(RSO I 249), held by Hubald, archdcn. of Dorset (see below). Sherborne priory became an abbey 1122, with abbot Thurstan (see below; cf. Ann. Margam p. 10 and Will. Malmes., GR II 559), to whom preb. was assigned, prob. around same time (see Sar. Chs. pp. 16-17).
Preb. listed c. 1150 (Psalter list). Preb. consisted of parish church, tithes, chapels of Compton and Folke, and lands, held by successive abbots of Sherborne (Sar. Chs. pp. 16-17; RSO I 249-50). No portion of profits of preb. to go to communa during abbatial vacancies (RSO I 249-50; cf. Saltman, Theobald no. 246). Composition concerning residence 6 June 1191 (Sar. Chs. pp. 50-1, original chs. I/18/S/Sherborne/1 and IV/E.5/Prebend of Lyme & Halstock/1). Abbot had houses in Salisbury close 1285 (HMC Var. Coll. I 344).
