Walter of Coutances, bp. of Lincoln, i.e. July 1183 × March 1185 (CRR XIII no. 929, cal. EEA I no. 306). Last occ. as chanc. of king of France 21 Apr. × 31 Oct. 1185 (Recueil des Actes de Philippe Auguste, ed. M. H.-F. Delaborde et al. (Paris, 1916-79), I nos. 139-40, 143-4), and chancellery vacant before 31 Oct. 1185 (ibid. nos. 146-7). Said in 1189 to be dead (see L. Welles III 125), Oct. 1226 × Feb. 1227 (app. 1). Excused 15 Aug. 1226 (RSO II 61); fined for non-residence Feb. 1227 (ibid. p. 76); absent 9 Sept. 1228 (ibid. p. 104). Last occ. this preb. 20 Dec. 1230 × 19 Dec. 1231 (Rot. Welles III 190). Had been succeeded before 19 Dec. 1232 (ibid. p. 201). Possibly to be identified with M. William of Lincoln, who occ. as can. 3 Oct. 1227 (Sar. Chs. p. 189), and was absent, 'in borealibus partibus' 9 Sept. 1228 (RSO II 104), but William of Ingoldsby also occ., as excused, in this document. For two men called William of Lincoln in this period, see 1 Fasti III 34.

Had claim to treasurership, settled 18 Aug. 1246 (ibid.; see list 5). This preb. called 'Graham maryn', c. 1284 (C. 511). Continued to hold this preb. as bp.-el. of Capua (prov. 13 Jan. 1252; new prov. 27 May 1266, Eubel I 164), occ. 20 Dec. 1260 (Rot. Gravesend p. 5). D. as this preb. by 21 Dec. 1271 (ibid. p. 50).
