PREBEND

Grantham (Lincs.) a royal manor 1086 (DB I 337d). Its churches given to cans. by bp. Osmund 1091 (carta), conf. by Henry II 1158 (RSO I 205).

Two prebs. prob. in existence c. 1150 (Psalter list), and accounted in Pipe Rolls 1166 and 1185/6 (below, Walter and Guy). Prebs. of Grantham Australis and Borealis consisted of churches of South and North Grantham, and before 1226 an interest in Stratford-sub-Castle (Old Sarum) (RSO I 259-60, also pd. Sar. Chs. pp. 167-8; cf. VCH Wilts. VI 201, and see preb. Stratford, list 55). Grantham Australis included chapels of Gonerby, Harlaxton, Cotsworth, Stoke and Welby (see Rot. Welles I 32, 34-5, 66, III 216; Rot. Grosseteste pp. 43-4, 64, 83, 89-90; Rot. Gravesend pp. 15, 35, 44, 57, 72; Reg. Sutton I 39, 142, 147, 166, 174, 206). Preb. called 'Graham Willelmi' May-June 1284 (app. 2; cf. C. 511, valuation of c. 1284).

Held part of Grantham, perhaps Australis, as preb. before 1186 (PR 32 Hen. II p. 167). Perhaps to be identified with Guy, who occ. as can. once only, c. 1173 (Cart. Lewes Wilts. no. 47), who is presum. to be identified with Guy clk., not called can., who occ. ? before 1173 (RSO I 226-7), c. 16 Oct. 1173 (IV/C.3/Potterne/1; cf. ibid. no. 9), and perhaps also with scribe of a ch. of bp. Jocelin, 1142 × 84 (II/5/1142×84, 'Guido qui scripsit hanc cartam'). Prob. not the same as M. Guy, not called can., who witnesses ch. of bp. Jocelin c. 1155 x 1165 (Oxford Chs. no. 24).]

Archdcn. of Norfolk from before Sept. 1198 (Norwich dioc., 1 Fasti II 65). First occ. as can. 7 Jan. 1213/14 (Nova Const.). Occ. as preb. Grantham before 1219 (Rot. Welles I 32, 34-5), identified as this preb. 20 Dec. 1224 × 19 Dec. 1225 (ibid. III 136). Excused 15 Aug. 1222 (Sar. Stats. p. 70, also pd. RSO II 18). Also can. of Lincoln (1 Fasti III 123); dean of St Martin le Grand, London; justice in eyre (Pat. R. 1216-25 pp. 208, 271). D. by 14 Sept. 1225 (ibid. p. 550), as this preb. (Rot. Welles III 149).

Bartholomew de Kemesey

Can. unident. preb. by Oct. 1219 (list 66). Adm. by bp. of Lincoln to this preb., on pres. of bp. of Salisbury, in succession to Geoffrey de Bocland, 20 Dec. 1225 × 19 Dec. 1226 (Rot. M. Laurence de Sancto Martino (fn. 2)

Can. of Chichester; archdcn. of Coventry (Lichfield dioc.). Royal coll. of this preb., s.v., 6 Nov. 1246 (CPR 1232-47 p. 492), adm. before 16 June 1247 (Rot. Grosseteste p. 91). Bp. of Rochester, el. 19 Oct. 1250, cons. 9 Apr. 1251 (1 Fasti II 77). Papal disp. for 3 years to retain his benefices as bp., including this preb., mentioned 17 July 1251 (Reg. Innoc. IV no. 5446, cal. CPL I 273). Occ. making pres. to church in preb., called 'custos', 17 June 1249 × 16 June 1250 (Rot. Grosseteste p. 125). Res. his interest before 16 June 1252 (ibid. pp. 127-8).

M. Nicholas of York (fn. 3)

Bp.'s official, and prob. also can. when occ. 9 June 1249 (C. 269). Had bp.'s coll. to this preb., but M. Laurence de Sancto Martino still in possession, by papal disp.; mandate that Nicholas is to have preb. at expiry of Laurence's 3 years, dated 17 July 1251 (Reg. Innoc. IV no. 5446, cal. CPL I 273). Called rector of this preb. while Laurence called 'custos' 17 June 1249 × 16 June 1250 (Rot. Grosseteste p. 125). Pres. by bp. on res. of Laurence, before 16 June 1252 (ibid. pp. 127-8). Not to be confused with man of same name who was archdcn. of Wilts. by Aug. 1247, last occ. after 11 March 1257 (list 10), with whom he occ. 2 March 1252/3 (IV/C.4/33).

William of Stoke (fn. 4)

First occ. as can. and this preb. 15 March 1264 (Rot. Gravesend p. 15). Occ. this preb. frequently in Lincoln registers of later 1260s, 1270s, 1280s and 1290s (see Rot. Gravesend and Reg. Sutton), and May-June 1284 (app. 2; cf. C. 511). Occ. as can. 10 May 1288 (app. 3). Last occ. this preb. 22 Apr. 1296 (Reg. Sutton I 206).
