Ulleskelf (W.R.): abp.'s manor with church in 1086 (Yorks. DB fos. 303v, 379).

In 1286 preb. had houses in York, near Minster (Reg. Romeyn I 356).

In c. 1295 preb. had land and a manor-house in Ulleskelf (fn. 206) and some houses in York (Extents pp. 35-6).

Called Master, but not can., Apr. 1161 × Jan. 1182 (Mowbray Chs. no. 227). Clerk of abp. Roger, occ. [1180] (Cart. Guisborough II no. 684 = EEA XX no. 41; cf. cart. of Sir Henry Pierpoint: BL MS Loans 29/60 fo. 263r = EEA XX no. 6). First occ. as can. 28 Sept. 1177 × 22 Nov. 1181 (EYC I no. 160 = EEA XX no. 135; cf. EYC I no. 280 = EEA XX no. 53, where he occ. as clerk; cf. EYC I no. 550). Occ. as this preb. 12 Apr. 1188 (YMF I no. 47). Occ. as can. several times, (fn. 207) last 1194 × 98 (EYC V no. 302). Prec. by 2 May 1199; last occ. 1200; d. before 4 March 1201 (list 3).

M. Peter of Sherburn

Abp.'s official (Cart. Blyth no. 228, a corrupt text, presum. from before 1201). First occ. as can. 1197 × 1201 (EYC XII no. 14) and ? 1201 (YMF I no. 31; cf. EYC VI no. 110, where he occ. without title ? c. 1201, and without title early 1203, Durham D. & C., 2.1 Archiep. 31). Occ. as having held this preb., presum. res. before 20 Jan. 1216 (Rot. Litt. Pat. p. 167b). Preb. Sherburn from before 31 Aug. 1218 (Reg. Gray p. 133; see preb. Fenton, list 25).

M. Alexander of Dorset

In royal service in Yorks. by Michaelmas 1205 (Pipe Roll 7 John (PRS new ser. xix, 1941) p. 38); had church of Knaresborough (W.R.) from 1208 (Rot. Litt. Pat. p. 82a; Rot. Chart. p. 215a). Preb. Strensall by royal coll. 20 Sept. 1215, but evidently ineffective (list 42). Royal coll. to this preb. in succession to M. Peter of Sherburn, with mandate to install, s.v., 20 Jan. 1216 (Rot. Litt. Pat. p. 164a). No other occ. as can. Royal justice and administrator, last occ. 31 Oct. 1228 (Pat. Rolls 1225-32 p. 225). D. by 17 March 1233 (Close Rolls 1231-34 pp. 197, 201-2). Evidently res. this preb. by May or June 1226 (below).

M. Thomas of Lichfield (fn. 208)

Royal clerk prob. by 18 Aug. 1212 (Rot. Litt. Pat. p. 94a). Prob. not yet can. when occ. without title 22 Sept. 1218 (Feodarium Prioratus Dunelmensis [ed. W. Greenwell] (SS 1viii, 1872) p. 1xxxviii) and 21 July 1219 (CPR 1216-25 p. 197; cf. CPL I 135, 241). First occ. as can. before 22 May 1221 (Reg. Gray p. 139 n.). Occ. as this preb. May or June 1226 (Rot. Litt. Claus. II 153a). 1230 (Close Rolls 1227-31 p. 576) and 13 Jan. 1235 (Yorks. Fines 1232-46 p. 30). Also successively chanc. of Chichester by 5 June 1224; dean from soon after 11 June 1229, last occ. March 1240, had been succeeded by Aug. 1241 (1 Fasti V 9, 16). Possibly writer of devotional works (Sharpe, Handlist no. 1779).

M. Hugh de Cantilupe

Prec. from before 22 Sept. 1258 (list 3). Occ. as prec. and this preb. 5 Nov. 1267 (Reg. Giffard p. 134). Last occ. as prec. 28 Dec. 1267, had been succeeded by 8 Feb. 1274 (list 3).

An unnamed preb. was non-resident 1286 and preb. was farmed to M. Henry of Newark, archdcn. of Richmond (Reg. Romeyn I 356), who was prob. farmer of preb. earlier, when he occ. at Ulleskelf 18 June 1283 (Chs. Bridlington p. 434).

M. Hugh de Menethorpe (fn. 209)

Abp.'s official, occ. Oct. 1297 (Reg. Newark p. 232). Abp.'s coll. to this preb. 18 Sept. 1298, with mandate to induct 29 Dec. (ibid. pp. 215-16). Occ. as can. 14 Sept. 1299 (ibid. p. 318). Presum. res. when kg. recovered right of pres. to this preb., s.v., 15 Aug. × 16 Sept. 1299 (Notes on Religious ... Houses of Yorkshire, ed. W. P. Baildon, II (YRS 1xxxi, 1931) p. 96; CPR 1292-1301 p. 437). Still alive, not called can., 1301 (Reg. Corbridge I 127-8).

Adam of Osgodby (fn. 210)

Rector of Gargrave (W.R.) from 24 Nov. 1292 (Fasti Paroch. IV 43). Royal coll. to this preb., s.v., 16 Sept. 1299 (CPR 1292-1301 p. 437). Proxies appd. (Liber Epistolaris of Richard de Bury, ed. N.
