Saturday, January 7th, 1659.

Letter read, &c.

A LETTER from the Mayor, Recorder, and Chamberlain, and others of the Town of Colchester, was read.

Ordered, That this Letter be referred to the Committee for Inspections; to consider of the Persons who have shewed Disaffection to the Parliament; and report to this House, what they think fit to be done therein.

Ordered, That the Thanks of this House be given to the Mayor, Recorder, Chamberlain, and others of the Town of Colchester, for their good Affection and faithful Service done for the Parliament: And that Sir Henry Mildmay do prepare a Letter of Thanks, accordingly; And that Mr. Speaker do sign and seal the said Letter with the Seal of the Parliament.

Observation of Sunday.

Ordered, That all Mayors, Justices of the Peace, and all other Officers and Ministers whom it doth or may concern, be, and are hereby, required and enjoined to see, that all Acts and Laws, for the due and strict Observation of the Lord's Day, be put in effectual Execution.

Ordered, That this Vote be forthwith printed and published.

Invalid Soldiers, &c.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Council of State, to see that the Sum of Four thousand Pounds, formerly ordered to be paid for Relief of maimed Soldiers, Pensioners, Widows, and Orphans of Ely-house, be forthwith paid, for their present Relief and Subsistence.

Publick Money.

Ordered, That the Letters from Marke Grimes, from Cardiffe-Castle, be referred to the Committee for Inspections: And that they take care for the getting in of the Sum of One thousand Pounds, now in Cardiffe-Castle, taken out of the Hands of the Treasurers of the said County for the Service of the Commonwealth.

Post Office.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Council of State, forthwith to take the Office of Postmaster into their Hands; and to take care, that the said Office be managed for the best Advantage of the Commonwealth; and to call the Persons who have received the Profits of the said Office; to an Account; and report the Matter to the Parliament; with their Opinion therein.

Raising Money, &c.

Ordered, That the Business of Money, and Settling of the Admiralty, be taken into Consideration on Monday Morning next.

Elections.

Ordered, That the Committee, touching Qualifications of Members to sit and serve in Parliament, do make their Report on Tuesday Morning next.

Army Pay.

Ordered, That the Two Troops of Captain Mason and Captain Angell, which came from Portsmouth, be within the Month's Pay formerly ordered to the Soldiery.

Sir A. Cooper's Case.

Resolved, That the Report touching Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper be now made.

Mr. Corbet did now make Report of the Case of Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper; viz. That, upon Consideration of the whole Matter, the Committee are of Opinion, That Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper is duly elected Burgess for the Town of Downton in the County of Wilts, to sit and serve in this Parliament.

Resolved, That this House doth agree with the Committee, That Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper is duly elected Burgess for the Town of Downton in the County of Wilts, to sit and serve in Parliament.

Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper was called into the House: And, after he had taken his Place in the Parliament, he came up to the Clerk's Table; and there, reading the Engagement openly, did, after, subscribe the same at the Table.

A Letter from Major Smithson, and others, from Yorke, of the Third of January 1659, was read.

Ordered, That this Letter be referred to the Council of State; to take the same into Consideration; and to hear what Captain Strangewaies hath to say, touching the same.

Ordered, That the Letter from Pendennis-Castle be referred to the Council of State; to take especial Care therein.

The Engagement.

Ordered, That the Debate, upon the Bill touching the Engagement, be adjourned till Tuesday Morning next.

Army.

Ordered, That the House do this Afternoon take into Consideration the Settlement of the Officers of the Army.

The House adjourned itself until Two of the Clock.

Dissolution of Parliament by Cromwell.

WHEREAS this House find an Entry in the JournalBook, the 20th of April 1653, in these Words; viz. "This Day his Excellency the Lord General dissolved this Parliament:" Which was done without Consent of Parliament: Resolved, That the Parliament doth declare, That the same is Forgery.

Resolved, That Mr. Scobell be sent for to the Bar of this House.

Lientenant of the Tower.

The Question being propounded, That Colonel Morley be appointed Lieutenant of the Tower;

And the Question being put, That that Question be now put;

It passed with the Affirmative.

And the main Question being put; It was

Resolved, That Colonel Morley be appointed Lieutenant of the Tower of London: And that a Commission be prepared for constituting him Lieutenant of the Tower accordingly.

Dissolution of Parliament by Cromwell.

The House being informed, That Mr. Scobell, was at the Door;

He was called in: And, being at the Bar of this House, the said Entry in the Journal-Book was shewed unto him: And, being examined, Who made the aforesaid Entry in the Journal-Book, he acknowleged, That it was his own Hand-writing; and that he did it without Direction of any Person whatsoever.

Indemnity for making the Entry.

Resolved, That the said Entry be expunged out of the Journal-Book.

Ordered, That it be referred to a Committee, to consider, Whether the Act of Indemnity extends to pardon this Offence; and to report their Opinion therein to the Parliament: Viz. unto Baron Nicholas, Mr. Nevill, Mr. West, Mr. Ralegh, Mr. Solicitor Reynolds, Colonel Lister, Mr. Garland, Mr. Dormer, Sir Peter Wentworth, Mr. Lenthall, Mr. Scot, Mr. Cawley, Mr. Say, Colonel Harvey, Colonel Martin, Sir John Trevor, Mr. Love, Mr. Oldsworth, Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper, Colonel Dove; or any Three of them: And are to meet on Monday, at Two of the Clock in the Afternoon, in the Speaker's Chamber.

Clerk of Parliament.

Ordered, That Mr. Millington do make his Report, on Wednesday next, of the Act for settling the Office of Clerk of the Parliament on Thomas St. Nicholas Esquire.

Army Appointments.

Sir Arthur Hesilrig reports from the Commissioners for the Army, A List of Names of Officers in Colonel Herbert Morley his Regiment: Which was read.

The Question being propounded, That Colonel Ingoldsby be Colonel of this Regiment;

And the Question being put, That this Question be now put;

The House was divided.
The Noes went forth.

So it passed in the Negative.

Resolved, That it be re-committed, as to the naming a Colonel for this Regiment.
